Install the 4,000-sheet HCI paper tray and stand

This document provides instructions to install the optional 4,000-sheet high-capacity input (HCI) tray (part number: 9UW03A).
  1. Take the new accessory out of the box, and make sure that the contents match this illustration:

  2. Press the Power button to turn off the printer.

  3. Disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer and the outlet.

  4. If a USB or network cable is connected, disconnect it from the rear of the printer.
  5. Open Tray 2 and remove it completely from the printer.

  6. Place the accessory on a stable surface, and note where the alignment pins are located.

  7. Remove the tape from the exterior of the HCI accessory.

  8. Lift and place the printer on top of the accessory, using the alignment pins on the top to position the printer.
      caution:
    Check the weight of your printer before attempting to lift it. HP recommends that two to four people move the printer, depending on the weight.

  9. Insert Tray 2 back into the printer, and close the tray.

  10. Open both HCI trays and remove the packing materials and the package of tray number cubes.

  11. Slide the lock on the right front of the HCI accessory to the locked position. This locks the accessory to the printer for stability.

  12. On the rear of the HCI accessory, slide the lock to the locked position to ensure stability of the printer and accessory.

  13. Open both of the HCI trays and load paper into each tray. Then press the blue tab to adjust the paper guide to the size of paper being used.

  14. Close the HCI trays.

  15. Remove the tray number cubes from their packaging, and insert them into the slot on the front of the tray (with the correct number facing outward).
    note:
    The numbers that you use will depend on whether or not you have installed any other accessory trays on your printer.

  16. Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the printer and the outlet.

  17. Press the Power button to turn on the printer.

  18. Reconnect the USB or network cable.
  19. Configure the accessory:
    • If you attached the accessory before installing the printer software, it is configured during the initial software installation.
    • If you attached the accessory after installing the printer software, follow the steps below (that pertain to your operating system) to configure the accessory.
    macOS: The list of installed options should automatically update during the first print job after installing the accessory. If not, perform the following steps:
    1. From the Apple menu, click System Preferences.
    2. Select Print & Scan (or Printers & Scanners).
    3. Select the printer, click Options & Supplies, and then click the Options tab.
    4. Manually configure the accessory.
    Windows® 8.0, 8.1 and 10: When attaching the accessory after installing the printer software, perform the following steps:
    1. Windows® 10: Right-click the Start button in the lower-left corner of the open desktop.
      Windows® 8.0 and 8.1: Scroll to the bottom-left corner of the screen, and right-click the window that displays.
    2. Select Control Panel. Under Hardware and Sound, select View devices and printers.
    3. Right-click the name of the printer, and then select Printer Properties.
    4. Click the Device Settings tab.
    5. Update the installed options. The steps vary according to connection type and print driver:
      • Network or USB connections with the HP Universal Print Driver (UPD): Select Update Now in the Installable Options section under Automatic Configuration.
      • Network or USB connections with the HP PCL 6 print driver: Select Update Now.
      • Network or USB connections with the HP PCL-6 version 4 print driver: Manually install the accessory by clicking the drop-down menu next to the tray to be installed. Select Installed.
    Windows® 7: When attaching the accessory after installing the printer software, perform the following steps:
    1. Make sure the printer is turned on and connected to the computer or network.
    2. Open the Windows Start menu, and then click Devices and Printers.
    3. Right-click the name of the printer, and select Printer Properties.
    4. Click the Device Settings tab.
    5. Update the installed options. The steps vary according to connection type and print driver:
      • Network or USB connections with the HP Universal Print Driver (UPD): Select Update Now in the Installable Options section under Automatic Configuration.
      • Network or USB connections with the HP PCL 6 print driver: Select Update Now.
