Setting Up the Printer Hardware for the HP Officejet Pro 6230 ePrinter Series
This document applies to the HP Officejet Pro 6230 ePrinter.
To set up a printer for the first time, unpack the printer, connect the power cable, load paper in the main input tray, and then install the cartridges.
Remove the printer from the box, and then remove all packing materials from the printer.
Remove all the tape and packing materials from the outside of the printer.
Lift the output tray.

Grasp under the handle of the input tray and pull it open.
Remove the tape and packing materials inside the input tray.

Remove the packing materials inside the input tray
Push the input tray into the printer until it locks into place, and then lower the output tray.
Open the cartridge access door, and then remove the packing materials inside the cartridge access area.
Remove the sticker on the control panel display.

Close the cartridge access door.

Connect the power cord
Plug the printer into an electrical outlet, and then turn on the printer. Do not connect a USB cable at this time. The printer prompts you to connect the USB during the software installation.
Connect the power cord to the rear of the printer.
Plug the power cord directly into an electrical outlet.

Press the Power button to turn on the printer.

Load paper into the paper tray
Before you install the cartridges, load the tray with plain white paper, and then pull out the output tray extender.
Lift the output tray.

Grasp under the handle of the input tray, and then pull out the tray.
note:
When you pull out the input tray, one or all of the Paper Size Selection lights might blink. If you are changing the paper size, press the Paper Size Selection button (). Continue to press the button until the light displays next to your desired size.

Slide out the paper width guides as far as possible.
Insert a small stack of plain white paper into the tray. Make sure that the print side is face-down and the short edge is forward.

Make sure that the stack of paper is not higher than the dotted lines on the side of the input tray.

If necessary, slide the paper width guides inward so that they rest on the edges of the paper.

Push the tray into the printer until it locks into place.
Lower the output tray, and then pull out the tray extender.

Install the SETUP cartridges
For initial setup, install the SETUP cartridges that came with your printer.
caution:
Failure to install the SETUP cartridges causes a cartridge error.
Open the cartridge access door. The print carriage moves to the center of the cartridge access area.
Make sure that the carriage is idle and silent, and then remove the packing materials inside the printhead assembly.

Remove a cartridge from its package, and then pull the orange pull-tab straight back.
caution:
Make sure that you remove the orange pull-tab and plastic wrap completely before you remove the orange cap in the next step. Otherwise, ink might leak from the cartridge. When you remove the plastic wrap, the paper label on the top of the cartridge tears slightly, which is necessary to properly vent the cartridge.

Hold the cartridge by its sides, and then twist the protective orange cap counter-clockwise to snap it off the cartridge.
note:
You might need to apply some force to move the cap.

caution:
Do not touch the copper-colored contacts or the ink nozzles. Touching these parts can result in clogs, ink failure, and bad electrical connections.
Turn the cartridge so that the cartridge contacts face downward, and then match the label color with the color dot on the carriage.
Slide the cartridge into its slot, and then gently press the cartridge down until it clicks into place.

Repeat these steps to install all the SETUP cartridges.

Run your finger along the tops of the cartridges to make sure that none of them are protruding. If you feel any cartridges that are not level, press down firmly until each cartridge snaps into place.
Close the cartridge access door.

Wait for the printer to align the cartridges. After the alignment is complete, the printer prints an alignment page.
