HP Tablets - Working with Files (Android 4.4/KitKat)

This document applies to HP and Compaq tablets with Android 4.4/KitKat operating system.
Your tablet features internal storage, as well as options for expanded storage using a memory card or online cloud storage solutions. Use this document to familiarize yourself with the file storage options on your tablet.

Using the memory card reader

Memory cards add more storage space to the tablet. You can create backup copies of your files, or transfer files and folders between multiple devices, using memory cards.
In the Android 4.4/KitKat operating system, secondary external storage devices (such as memory cards) are handled differently than in previous versions of Android. These changes are designed to enhance securty, and to allow the system more control over how apps use secondary external storage. The following applies to microSD card storage on tablets running Android 4.4/KitKat:
  • Apps are allowed to store files in a folder designated for private use by the individual app on the memory card.
  • An app cannot access or modify files in a folder that belongs to a different app.
  • Data written by an app to a private folder on the memory card is erased when the app is uninstalled.
  • Versions of apps that have not been updated by app developers to work in Android 4.4 may be unable to use the memory card.
  • File manager apps may not have permission to access or modify the contents of the memory card.
To insert a memory card, push the card into the card reader slot. On some tablet models, the card reader slot is located under a flap, near the right or left edge of the tablet.

  2. In the Device section, touch Storage.

  6. Push on the edge of the memory card to release. You may need to use a fingernail or other thin object to push the card in far enough so that the card releases. Remove the card.

Using HP Connected Drive (online cloud storage solution)

Online cloud storage services, such as HP Connected Drive, save your files on the Web so that they can be accessed anywhere. The HP Connected Drive app comes preinstalled on select tablet models, and is also available for download from the Google Play Store (in English). For more information, refer to the HP support document Using HP Connected Drive to Store and Share Files.

Frequently asked questions

Refer to the following answers to frequently asked questions (FAQs) about working with files on your tablet.

Can I connect the tablet to a computer to transfer files?

Yes, you can connect the tablet to another computer using the USB cable. Disconnect the USB cable from the AC adapter and connect it to one of the USB ports on your computer. Connect the other end of the cable to the micro-USB port on the tablet. Wait for the USB driver to install on your computer. If a screen lock method (such as pattern, PIN, or password) is set, unlock the tablet. The tablet appears as an external storage device on your computer.

Why can't I see my files when I connect my tablet to a computer?

If you are signed in to the tablet with a user account, your locally stored files and folders might not be available when connected to a computer. Sign in to the tablet owner account to access files stored on the tablet from a computer, and make sure the screen is unlocked (if a lock method, such as pattern, PIN, or password, is set).

Why can't I see the files on my memory card?

If you have inserted a microSD card but you cannot find the files on your tablet, the app you are using to attempt access to the files may not have permission to use the memory card. Try using a different app to open the files.
If you have previously used the same app to access memory card files in Android 4.4/KitKat and it is no longer working, use the following steps to troubleshoot the memory card:
  1. If possible, test the memory using another computer to make sure it is functioning correctly.
If you cannot access the card on the other computer, there may be a problem with the card. Contact the memory card manufacturer for support or replace the card. If the card is functioning properly, continue to the next step.
  2. Remove and reinsert the memory card on your tablet.
If the tablet can now see the card and files, you are done. If the tablet still cannot access the card, continue to the next step.
  3. On the Home page, touch the All apps icon, and then touch the Settings icon.
  4. In the Device section, touch Storage.

  5. Touch Mount SD card.

If the Mount option is not available for your card, continue to the next step.
  6. With the card connected, restart your tablet: Press and hold the power button, touch Power off, and then touch OK. When the tablet is fully powered off, press and hold the power button again until the HP logo appears on the screen.
If the card is still not available, your tablet may need to be serviced. Contact HP for support.
