Introduction

This document is provided to assist in removing and replacing the PCIe graphics card for the HP Z420 Workstation.

Minimum skill level

The end user requires no hardware-specific training to replace the defective part. The end user should have familiarity with system hardware and software requiring repair.

The replacement part number will vary depending on the PCIe graphics card that is being replaced. If a part is listed as "Yes" under "Requires Return", then the defective part needs to be returned to HP.

If the unit contains a part that is labeled with the "Original" spare number, please order the "Original" spare number as the replacement part. In this case, either the "Original" or the "Modified" spare number may be shipped which will not affect performance or functionality of the unit.

caution:

Failure to comply with the precautions could result in damage to the product or loss of data.
Remove the access panel. Click here to view how to remove the access panel.
Disconnect the auxiliary power cable from the card. Press the two release latches and rotate the PCI retention clamp until it is fully open.
Push out and hold the locking tab on the PCIe slot and partially lift the front end of the card out of the slot.
If the card has a support bracket, press the release tab on the PCI card guide and lift the back end of the card out of the slot.
Lift straight up on the card to remove it from the chassis.

PCIe graphics card replacement

If a new graphics card is being installed, remove the slot covers from the appropriate slots on the PCI bulkhead.

note:

Some cards require two slots.
Align the connectors on the card with the slot on the system board.
If the card has a support bracket, align it with slot in the PCI card guide.
Lower the card down over the slot on the system board.
Press down on the card until it is fully seated.
Rotate the PCI retention clamp down over the PCI bulkhead.
Press the two PCI retention clamp tabs on the rear of the chassis until they lock into place.
Connect the auxiliary power cable to the card.

note:

The graphics card requires auxiliary power. On some cards a 6-to-8 pin power adapter cable from one of the auxiliary power cables is used to extend power to the card.
