HP Officejet 6500A e-All-in-One Printer Series - Alignment Page Does Not Print

Issue
After you install new cartridges, the product does not print an alignment page as expected.
IMPORTANT: You must follow these solutions in the order presented to resolve the issue.
Solution one: Make sure that the cartridge access door is completely closed
Check the cartridge access door. If the door is not closed completely, press down on it until it rests on the body of the product.

  • If the alignment page prints automatically, continue to "Solution five, Step two: Scan the alignment page" in this document to complete the alignment process.
  • If the alignment page does not print, continue to the next solution.
Solution two: Make sure that the carriage can move freely
Follow these steps to make sure that the carriage can move freely.
  1. Open the cartridge access door. The carriage moves to the center of the product.

  2. Disconnect the power cord from the rear of the product.
      caution:
    You must unplug the power cord to move the carriage by hand and reset the paper feed mechanism without the risk of electrical shock.
  3. Unplug the power cord from the power source or electrical outlet.
  4. Check for any object that might restrict the carriage, including packing material.
  5. Remove any obstructions you find.

  6. Reach inside the product through the cartridge access door, and then manually move the carriage.
    • If the carriage is stuck on the right side of the product, move the carriage to the left side of the product.
    • If the carriage is stuck on the left side of the product, move the carriage to the right side of the product.
    • If the carriage is stuck in the middle of the product, move the carriage to the right side of the product.
  7. Make sure that the carriage can move freely across the width of the product. Firmly push the carriage to the left, and then to the right.
  8. Close the cartridge access door. Press down on it until it rests on the body of the product.

  9. Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the product.
  10. If the product does not turn on automatically, press the Power button () to turn it on.
  • If the alignment page prints automatically, continue to "Solution five, Step two: Scan the alignment page" in this document to complete the alignment process.
  • If the alignment page does not print, continue to the next solution.
Solution three: Remove and reinstall the cartridges
Improper placement or installation of the cartridges might prevent the product from printing an alignment page. Follow these steps to remove, and then reinstall the cartridges.
Step one: Remove the cartridges
  1. Press the Power button () to turn on the product, if it is not already on.
      note:
    The product must be on to release the cartridges.
  2. Open the cartridge access door. The carriage moves to the middle of the product.
      caution:
    Wait until the carriage is idle and silent before you continue.
  3. Press in the tab on the front of the cartridge to release it, and then pull it up and out to remove it from its slot.

      caution:
    Do not lift the gray latch handle on the carriage. Doing so can result in incorrectly seated cartridges and printing problems. The latch must remain down to install the cartridges correctly.
  4. Repeat these steps to remove each cartridge.
  5. Check for obstructions under and around the carriage. Remove any obstructions you find.
Step two: Reinstall the cartridges
Follow these steps to reinstall the cartridges. Repeat the steps for each cartridge.
  1. Hold the cartridge by its sides, with the contacts facing towards the carriage.
  2. Slide the cartridge into the empty slot, and then press down on the cartridge until it snaps firmly into place.

  3. Repeat these steps to reinstall each cartridge.
  4. Close the cartridge access door. Press down on it until it rests on the body of the product.

  5. If the product is not already turned on, press the Power button () to turn it on the product.
  • If the alignment page prints automatically, continue to "Solution five, Step two: Scan the alignment page" in this document to complete the alignment process.
  • If the alignment page does not print, continue to the next solution.
Solution four: Reset the All-in-One
Follow these steps to perform a hard reset.
  1. Press the Power button () to turn on the product.
  2. With the product turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the product.
  3. Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.
  4. Wait at least 15 seconds.
  5. Plug the power cord back into the wall outlet.
  6. Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the product.
  7. If the product does not turn on by itself, press the Power button () to turn it on.
      note:
    The product might go through a warm-up period. The product lights might flash and the carriage might move. Wait until the warm-up period finishes before proceeding.
  • If the alignment page prints automatically, continue to "Solution five, Step two: Scan the alignment page" in this document to complete the alignment process.
  • If the alignment page does not print, continue to the next solution.
Solution five: Realign the cartridges
Follow these steps to print an alignment page, and then realign the cartridges.

  1. Lift the product lid.

  2. Place the alignment sheet on with the print-side down on the right-front corner of the scanner glass. See the engraved guide next to the scanner glass for help loading the alignment sheet.

  3. Lower the product lid.
  4. On the product control panel, touch the Scan icon (), touch Computer to start the alignment.
  5. Wait while the product scans the alignment page, and then completes the alignment process.
  6. When the cartridge alignment is complete, recycle or discard the alignment page.
