HP and Compaq Desktop PCs - Error: Windows cannot display the volume control on the taskbar because the Volume Control program has not been installed (Windows XP)

This document applies to HP and Compaq desktop computers with Windows XP.
The volume control icon disappears from the taskbar and you cannot adjust the volume level for Windows sounds. When trying to place the volume icon in the taskbar from the Sound and Audio Devices in Control Panel, the following message displays:
Windows cannot place the volume control on the taskbar because the Volume Control program has not been installed. To install it, use Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel.
However, you cannot install the Volume Control program (sndvol32.exe) from Add/Remove Programs. To fix this error, complete the following steps:
  1. Click Start , and then click Run. Type cmd in the Open line, and click OK.
    The command window displays.
  2. Type the following command in the window:
    expand c:\i386\sndvol32.ex_ c:\windows\system32\sndvol32.exe
    Then press Enter.
    Windows expands and restores the sound control file.

  3. Close the command window by clicking the X in the upper right corner.
  4. To place the volume icon in the taskbar, click Start , and then click Control Panel. In Control Panel, click Sounds and Audio Devices.
  5. On the Volume tab in Sounds and Audio Devices, click Place volume icon in the taskbar. Click Apply, click OK, and close Control Panel.

  6. To verify that the volume control is restored, find the Volume icon on the taskbar.
