HP Compaq 8710w Mobile Workstation - Removing and Replacing the Hard Disk Drive

Introduction

This document is provided to assist in removing and replacing the Hard Disk Drive for the HP Compaq 8710w Mobile Workstation.

Minimum skill level

The End User requires no hardware-specific training to replace the defective part. The End user should have familiarity with system hardware and software requiring repair.

Tools required

  • Phillips P1 screwdrivers
  • Flat-bladed screwdriver

Hard Disk Drive removal

  1. Review the safety considerations before performing the steps listed below by clicking on the following link:
      caution:
    Failure to comply with the precautions could result in damage to your product or loss of data.
  2. Loosen the two captive P1 Phillips-head screws that secure the hard disk drive cover to the bottom of the notebook.
    note:
    Screw location is indicated by the appropriate icon.
  3. Use your finger or a flat-bladed tool to lift the inside edge of the hard disk drive cover and remove it.
  4. Loosen the captive spring-loaded P1 Phillips-head screw that secures the hard disk drive.
  5. Grasp the plastic tab and pull the hard disk drive toward the outside edge of the base enclosure to disconnect the hard disk drive from the system board connector.
  6. Lift the hard disk drive out of the bay and remove.
  7. Place the hard disk drive in a static dissipative bag.

Hard Disk Drive replacement

  1. Remove the hard disk drive from the static dissipative bag.
  2. Place the hard disk drive into the hard disk drive bay.
  3. Push the hard disk drive toward the inside of the base enclosure until the connector is seated.
  4. Tighten the captive spring-loaded P1 Phillips-head screw that secures the hard disk drive.
  5. Toe the hard disk drive cover into the enclosure.
  6. Tighten the two captive P1 Phillips-head screws.
