HP ScanJet N9120 - Set up and use the imprinter

The scanner includes an imprinter that can print a text message and index number on the back of documents that are fed through the automatic document feeder (ADF). An imprinter mark verifies that the document has been scanned, and the mark can indicate when the scan occurred.
  note:
If you are scanning two-sided pages, the imprinter mark might print over existing content on the pages.
Install or replace a print cartridge in the imprinter
The scanner uses an HP 51604A print cartridge. You must purchase the print cartridge separately.
  1. Raise the ADF input tray until it clicks into place.
Figure : Tilt the ADF input tray approximately 90 degrees
  2. Lift the green lever slightly, and slide the imprinter completely to the left.

  3. Raise the cartridge stall latch.
Figure : Lift the latch above the print cartridge
  4. If you are replacing an empty print cartridge, slide it to the right to remove it from the cartridge stall.
  5. Remove the print cartridge from its packaging. Pull the tab to remove the protective tape from the nozzles.

  6. Hold the new print cartridge with the nozzles down and slide it into the cartridge stall.

  7. Lower the cartridge stall latch to lock the print cartridge in place.
  8. Grasp the center of the ADF input tray, and then lower the ADF input tray into position for scanning.
  9. Update the imprinter history:
Press the Tools () button on the scanner front panel to open the HP Scanner Tools Utility. Click the Imprinter tab.
In the Cartridge Status section, click Record Replacement.
Position the imprinter
The position of the imprinter determines the left-right location of the imprinter mark on the scanned page.
  note:
For narrow pages, if the imprinter is positioned outside of the width of the paper in the ADF input tray, the imprinter is not able to print on the scanned pages. In this case, the scan does not complete and an error message is displayed on the computer screen.
  1. Raise the ADF input tray until it clicks into place.
Figure : Tilt the ADF input tray approximately 90 degrees
  2. Lift the green lever slightly, and then slide the imprinter to the position that you want.
Figure : Lift the green lever slightly, and then slide the imprinter to the position that you want.
      note:
Several paper sizes are indicated in the imprinter carriage. If you set the imprinter at the position for the paper size that you are using, the imprinter mark is printed about 5 mm (.2 in) from the side of the page. You can select any position that prints on the size of the paper that you are using. If you leave the imprinter between the marked positions, the imprinter might shift during scanning, and the imprinter mark will be of poor quality.
  3. Grasp the center of the ADF input tray, and then lower the ADF input tray into position for scanning.
Test the imprinter
Test the imprinter to verify that the print cartridge is loaded properly and to check the placement of the imprinter mark on the page.
  note:
To prevent the counter value from changing during the test, the imprinter test prints a preset mark in the configured location.
  1. Place a single page in the automatic document feeder input tray.
  2. Press the Tools () button on the scanner front panel to open the HP Scanner Tools Utility. Click the Imprinter tab.
  3. In the Cartridge Status section, click Test Imprinter.
Clean the imprinter
Clean the imprinter whenever the imprinter mark does not print completely.
  1. Press the Tools () button on the scanner front panel to open the HP Scanner Tools Utility. Click the Imprinter tab.
  2. In the Cartridge Status section, click Clean Imprinter.
Use the imprinter
  1. Open the HP Smart Document Scan Software.
  2. Select a scan profile, and then click Edit.
  3. On the Scan tab of the Profile Settings dialog box, click Advanced Settings.
  4. On the Imprinter tab of the Properties dialog box, select Enable Imprinting.
  5. In the Text box, enter the text to be printed on the back of each scanned document.
You can also do the following:
  • Set a counter for number of pages imprinted.
  • Include the date and time in the imprinter mark.
  • Specify the distance between the leading edge of the document and the beginning of the imprinter mark.
  • Rotate the imprinter mark.
  • Make the imprinter mark bold.
  • Disable scanning when the print cartridge is running low on ink.
