HP Deskjet D2430, D2460, D2466, D2468 Printers - 'Incompatible Ink Cartridge' or 'Ink Cartridges Missing' Error Displays

Issue
After you install a print cartridge, the power light continues to blink. The printer will not print. The printer cover is closed and paper is loaded in the In tray. One of the following messages may appear on your computer screen:
  • Incorrect Print Cartridge
  • Incompatible Print Cartridge
  • Problem with the [Left/Right] Print Cartridge
Solution
Work through the sections below in order. When the power light stops blinking, you have solved the problem.
  note:
In the procedures below, the "problem" cartridge is identified by the message on the computer screen.
Step one: Close printer cover
If the printer cover is open, close it.
  • Do you have the printer connected to a computer? If you do, and if the HP software is installed on the computer, you should have seen a message displayed on the computer.
  • If you do not have the printer connected to a computer, or the HP software is not installed, there is no computer message. Try the steps below to identify the problem cartridge:
    1. Open the cartridge access door.
    2. Remove the cartridge on the right.
    3. Close the cartridge access door.
      • If the On light starts blinking, the tricolor cartridge (the cartridge on the left) is the problem cartridge. Continue with Step 3 below - you only have to perform the steps on the problem cartridge.
      • If the On light does not blink, you cannot tell which cartridge is the problem cartridge. Continue with the steps below - you must perform the steps on both cartridges.
If the problem still occurs, the electrical contact between the cartridges and the printer might be bad. Removing and reseating the cartridges might help.
  1. Open the cartridge access door and wait a moment for the cartridges to come to the center.
  2. Press down on the end of the problem cartridge to snap it out of the carriage.

  3. If there is tape on the cartridge, remove it. Do not remove the copper-colored strip.

  4. Replace the cartridge. Place it in its slot at a slight angle, and then press up and forward until the cartridge snaps into position.

    • The black or photo cartridge goes on the right.
    • The tricolor cartridge goes on the left.
  1. Gather the following items to clean the ink cartridge and carriage:
    • Clean distilled water. Use bottled or filtered water if distilled water is not available. Tap water can contain contaminants that damage the ink cartridge.
    • Clean cotton swabs or any soft, lint-free material that will not stick to the ink cartridges (coffee filters work well).
    • Sheets of paper or a paper towel to rest the ink cartridge on during cleaning.
  2. Open the ink cartridge access door and wait until the carriage is idle and silent.
  3. Disconnect the power cord from the back of the printer.
  4. Remove the ink cartridge and place it on a piece of paper with the nozzle plate facing up.
      note:
Do not leave the ink cartridges outside of the printer for more than 30 minutes. If the ink cartridge is outside of the printer for too long, the ink can dry and clog the nozzles.
  5. Dip a clean foam-rubber swab or lint-free cloth into distilled water, and then squeeze any excess water from it.
  6. Clean only the copper-colored contacts

    2. Ink nozzles (do not clean)
  7. Repeat these steps for the other ink cartridge.
  8. Lightly moisten another cotton swab with distilled water, and then squeeze any excess water from the swab.
  9. Use the swab to clean the electrical contacts in the carriage, located inside the printer on the carriage slots.

  10. Wait 10 minutes to allow the ink cartridge and carriage electrical contacts to dry.
  11. Reinstall the ink cartridges.
  12. Close the ink cartridge access door.
  13. Reconnect the power cord to the back of the printer.
  14. Press the Power button to turn on the printer.
  15. Try to print a page.
  16. If you are still unable to print, repeat these steps to clean and reseat the ink cartridges. Multiple cleanings might be necessary to restore printing.

Step five: Repeat reseating and cleaning steps
If the problem is not solved, repeat the reseating and cleaning procedures above.
Visit HP SureSupply to check ink or toner cartridge compatibility or purchase replacement cartridges and other supplies.
  1. If necessary, select your country/region.

  2. Follow the on-screen instructions to order new supplies or check cartridge compatibility with your printer.
You can also purchase genuine HP cartridges and supplies from other retailers.
If you do not have a replacement cartridge, you can still print in ink backup mode. Simply remove the problem cartridge, and print with the remaining cartridge.
  • If you remove the tri-color cartridge, printouts will be in grayscale.
  • If you remove the black or photo cartridge, the product prints slowly and the colors in the printouts might differ.
