HP ColorPro Plotter, HP 2-Pen Graphic Plotter and HP 7475A Plotter - Connecting an HP-IB Interface Plotter to a Standalone PC

The following document contains information about the three options available to connect a Hewlett Packard desktop plotter with an HP-IB interface to a standard PC. Option 1 and 3 are the only options fully supported by Hewlett Packard. Information about the ColorPro (7440A), 7470A, and 7475A will follow.
OPTION 1: Changing the I/O (Input/Output) port on the HP Plotter
A plotter interface board (I/O port) can be ordered with the following part numbers from HP Support Materials Organization. HP recommends that ordering and installation be performed by authorized service personnel only. Call to locate the nearest Hewlett Packard Service Center.

OPTION 2: Adding a third party protocol converter
An interface protocol converter box can be placed between computer and plotter. Protocol converter boxes are cabled between the computer and the peripheral, and ideally should be transparent to communication taking place. This device can only be purchased from a third party vendor and support must be obtained from that vendor.
For more information, contact one of the following vendors:
  • Via West Interface, Inc.
  • Black Box Co.
  • Omnitronix
  • I/O Tech
OPTION 3: HP-IB interface card, software, and cable for Vectra and IBM-compatible PCs
The interface card plugs directly into slots in IBM and compatible PCs, and may be installed by the user. An HP-IB cable is necessary to connect the HP-IB card on the PC to the HP-IB port on the plotter.
  note:
The HP-IB interface card will emulate a parallel (LPTx) port. Verify that the software intended for use with the plotter supports a parallel connection.
This card is NOT compatible with IBM's Micro Channel card mounting technology for the Personal System/2 computers.
