HP Designjet Printers - HP-IB Interface Options

HP no longer supports the use of HP-IB interfaces with HP Designjet printers. The two options listed below may provide a solution.
note:
HP does not support the following options. They are listed for information only.

Option 1

Interface Converter Boxes placed between computer and printer.
Converter boxes are cabled between the computer and the peripheral, and ideally should be transparent to communication taking place. Some third party vendors are Black Box, IO Tech, and Via West.

Pros

  • Maintain two - interface flexibility
  • Enables PC to communicate with measurement instruments using IEEE-488 interface

Cons

  • Third party vendor involved for service support
  • Complex setup requiring both HP-IB and RS-232 cables
  • Many of these boxes support two-way communication required by many software packages. Make sure the box and the software are compatible

Option 2

HP-IB Interface Cards for Vectra and IBM - compatible PCs only.
Interface cards plug directly into slots in IBM and compatible PCs, and may be installed by the user. Note that these cards listed are not compatible with IBM's Micro Channel card mounting technology for the Personal System/2 computers.

Part information

Part Name
HP-IB Interface Card
Part #
82335B

Pros

  • Enables PC to communicate with measurement instruments using IEEE-488 interface

Cons

  • Software packages may not support these cards. Packages which allow their output to be sent to PRN ports or LPTx ports (parallel) may work, however, many graphics packages send output to COMx ports (serial) only
