HP Printers - Printing from Android Smartphones or Tablets

This document is for HP network-connected or Wi-Fi Direct printers and Android smartphones or tablets.

Print from your Android OS 5.0 or later device to your printer using the HP Print Service Plugin.

Step 1: Install the HP Print Service Plugin

Install the HP Print Service Plugin on your Android OS 5.0 or later, and then turn on the plugin.

note:
Menus, icons, and the location of the print settings vary by Android version and device manufacturer.

Confirm your Android device is connected to the same network as your printer, or that Wi-Fi Direct on your printer and Android device is enabled.
On your Android device, install or update the HP Print Service Plugin (in English).
Once the installation or update is complete, choose your Android device to turn on the plugin:
- Android 7 (Nougat) and later devices: The HP Print Service Plugin turns on automatically after installation. Continue with these steps.
- Android 6 (Marshmallow) and earlier devices: Tap Settings, search for and open HP Print Service, and then tap On.
Turn off any other print service plugins, if necessary.

Your Android device is now ready to print using the HP Print Service Plugin.

Step 2: Print with the HP Print Service Plugin

Print photos, documents, emails, or webpages from Android apps that provide a Print option on their menu.

Open the item you want to print, tap the menu icon , and then tap Print.

Tap the down arrow to view the printer list, and then select HP [your printer model name] to print over the network, or DIRECT-xx-HP [your printer model name] to print with Wi-Fi Direct.
Tap the down arrow to change any print settings, and then tap the Print icon.

Does my HP printer support the HP Print Service Plugin?

Most HP printers released after 2004 support the HP Print Service Plugin. Go to Mobile Printing Solutions Compatible with HP Printers for more information.

What if I cannot connect to the printer, the printer does not display in the printer list, or a 'Printer isn't available' message displays?

Go to A 'Printer Isn't Available' Message Displays (Android) to troubleshoot network connection and printer setup issues.

Can I print if my app does not have a print option?

When an app does not support printing, you can send photos or PDF files to the HP Print Service Plugin using the Android Share feature in apps that include the feature.

Open the item you want to print, and then tap the Share icon or look for Share in the Export or Send menu.

Tap HP Print Service Plugin icon or tap Print icon . Share options vary based on Android OS version.

Tap the printer you want to use.

The print preview screen opens.
If necessary, zoom in on the portion of the item you want to print. Tap Layout, tap Resize and Move, tap Manual, and then use your fingers to zoom in and reposition the item.
Change any other desired print settings.
Tap Print icon .

note:
When you use the Share option, you can send multiple photos at the same time. However, you can only send one PDF file at a time.

Can I print remotely using Print Anywhere with the HP Print Service Plugin?

Yes. If you have a printer that supports Print Anywhere and have enabled Print Anywhere using the HP Smart app, you can print remotely to your printer using the HP Print Plugin. Supported printers have Remote and a cloud icon

in their description in the printer list.

When printing remotely, how do I resolve a 'Can’t connect to printer' error message?

Signing out and then signing back in to your HP account can resolve this error.

Open the HP Smart app, tap App Settings, tap Sign Out.
Tap Sign In, type your login credentials, and then tap Sign In.

Can I add and remove a printer manually from the HP Print Service Plugin?

When the plugin does not detect a printer you know is connected to the same network as your Android device or supports Wi-Fi Direct, you can add the printer manually. You can also remove a printer. Select a method for adding ore removing your printer.

Add a printer using the printer IP address

Add the printer manually to the HP Print Service Plugin using the printer IP address.

Gather the following items:
- The printer IP address
- The printer name
On your Android device, open the item you want to print, tap the menu icon , and then tap Print.

A print preview screen displays.
Next to Select a printer, tap the down arrow to view the printer list, and then tap All printers.
Tap Add printer, and then tap HP Print Service or HP Inc.
Tap On a Wi-Fi Network, and then type the printer name and IP address in the appropriate fields.
Tap OK.

Add a printer using Wi-Fi Direct

Add the printer manually to the HP Print Service Plugin using Wi-Fi Direct.

On your printer, make sure Wi-Fi Direct is turned on.
On your Android device, open the item you want to print, tap the menu icon , and then tap Print.

Next to Select a printer, tap the down arrow to view the printer list, and then tap All printers.
Tap Add printer, and then tap HP Print Service or HP Inc.
Tap Directly to the Printer, and then select DIRECT-xx-HP [your printer model name] from the list of available printers.
Tap OK.

Remove or edit a printer

Change the printer name, update the printer IP address, or remove the printer from the HP Print Service Plugin.

Tap Settings, and then search for and open HP Print Service.
Tap the menu icon , tap Add printer, and then tap Manage printers.
Find the printer you want to edit or remove, and then press and hold the printer name until the Manage printers menu displays.
Tap Modify to edit the printer name or update the printer IP address, or tap Forget printer to remove the printer.

Can I change the paper size for my print job from the HP Print Service Plugin?

Yes. HP recommends you confirm that the printer has the same size paper that you selected for the HP Print Service Plugin.

Open the item you want to print, tap the menu icon , and then tap Print.

Can I get help troubleshooting printer errors that display on my Android device?

When sending a print job from the HP Print Service Plugin, additional help is available when one of the following error messages displays:

Out of paper
Jam
Door open

To help you troubleshoot these issues, the HP Print Service Plugin provides a notification that allows you to open or install the HP Smart app, if it is not already installed.

Swipe down on the screen to display the notifications, and then tap the HP Print Service Plugin notification to install or open the HP Smart app.

What file formats can I print?

The HP Print Service Plugin supports the following file formats:

Print menu supported file formats
- Photos (JPEG, PNG)
- PDF
- Microsoft Office files
- Text files (TXT)
- Webpages (HTML)
Share menu supported file formats

Sharing multiple PDF files or combining PDF and photo files are not supported.

How do I monitor or cancel current print jobs?

Open the notification area to view a list of current print jobs or cancel a print job.

Monitor print jobs: Swipe down from the top of your home screen to view your current print jobs.
Cancel a print job: Swipe down from the top of your home screen to view your current print jobs, select the print job you want to cancel, and then tap Cancel

What if the printouts from my HP LaserJet printer are illegible?

The printout on an HP LaserJet printer from a PDF original or a web-based form, such a job application, registration form, or work order request is illegible. Turn on the Android Print Rendering setting to resolve the issue.

Tap Settings, and then search for and open HP Print Service.
Tap the menu icon , tap Printing settings, and then tap Advanced Settings.
Turn on Android Print Rendering.

Can I use a USB cable to print from my Android device?

Yes, depending on whether the USB cable is connected to your Android device or your computer.

If your printer is connected to your computer with a USB cable only, printing from your Android device does not work. The printer must be connected to a wired or wireless network or be connected directly to the Android device using a USB OTG (On-the-Go) cable. If you want to use a USB connection for a computer and also print over a network from your Android device, you can connect the printer through USB and to your network at the same time.
If your printer is connected to your Android device with a USB OTG (USB On-the-Go) cable, you can print from your Android device. Printing from an Android device with a USB OTG connection requires an Android device that supports USB OTG and a USB OTG cable, and requires that your printer supports PCL3 or PCL5 printer language. If you are unable to print using a USB OTG cable, check your printer documentation to confirm support for those printing languages.
