HP and Compaq Desktop PCs - Error: Catastrophic Failure 0x8000FFFF when Trying to Use MS Backup

Please try again.

Trying again results in the same error.
This error most likely indicates that another software program is using the same files as the Windows Restore service.
To prevent this error, use the following steps;
  1. This error is known to be caused by registry cleaning software. If you have downloaded and used registry cleaning software you can use the restore (back up) feature of the registry cleaning software to go back to the first time the registry was cleaned. Going back to the previous version of a registry will probably fix this issue, but software that was installed after the registry cleaning occurred might need to be reinstalled.
  2. Try to create a restore point again. If the error opens again, continue.
  3. Click Startand type services into the Start Search field.
  4. Click Services from the list of programs. If a User Account Control message opens, click Continue.
    A service window opens.
  5. Scroll down the list of services and double-click the Volume Shadow Copy service.
  6. Select Manual from the Startup Type field if it is not already selected.
  7. Click the Start button under Service Status

  8. Click OK and close the services window.
  9. Try to create a restore point. If the error still opens, continue.
  10. Use System Restore to go back to a previous restore point. The system setting at the previous restore point work because a restore point was created at that time.
