Use this procedure to install the optional 550-sheet paper tray on the printer.
Follow these steps to install the optional 550-sheet paper feeder tray:
The maximum recommended product configuration height is 126 cm (49.6 in). Exceeding this height by installing additional accessories is not recommended and could cause a potential tilt hazard.
Verify that the box for the optional 550-sheet paper feeder tray includes the following items:
Installation instructions leaflet
Bag of tray number tags
Optional 550-sheet paper feeder tray
Contents of the box
Press the Power button to turn off the printer, and then disconnect the power cord from the back of the printer.
Turn off the printer and disconnect the power cord
Disconnect the USB or network cable and the phone cable for the fax (if applicable) from the rear of the printer.
Disconnect the cables
Remove the tape and any packing materials from the tray.

Place the 550-sheet paper feeder on a sturdy surface, and then place the printer on top of the tray (callout 1). Use the alignment pins on top of the tray to position the printer.
Once the printer is positioned on the tray, turn the tray lock (callout 2) to secure the tray to the printer.
HP recommends that two people move the printer.
All trays must be closed when moving the printer.

Open the tray and then extend the paper guides by squeezing the adjustment latches and sliding the guides to the size of the paper being used
Do not extend more than one paper tray at a time. Do not use the paper tray as a step.

Load a stack of paper into the tray and adjust the paper guides so they lightly touch the stack, but do not bend it. Then close the tray.
To prevent jams, do not overfill the tray. Be sure that the top of the stack is below the tray-full indicator.
Keep hands out of paper trays when closing.
Load paper
Remove the tray number tags from their packaging and attach the tag to the top-right edge of the tray.
There are extra number tags included in case additional accessory trays are installed.

Attach the tray number tag(s)
Reconnect the USB or network cable and the phone cord for fax (if applicable) to the rear of the printer.
Reconnect the cables
Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the printer, and then press the Power button to turn on the printer.

If you are attaching the accessory after installing the printer software, perform the steps below that pertain to your specific operating system (macOS, Windows 11 or 10, or Windows 7).
If you are attaching the accessory before installing the printer software, this procedure is NOT necessary.
macOS: The list of installed options should automatically update during the first print job after installing the accessory.
Windows® 11 and 10:
Right-click on the bottom-left corner of the screen, or left-click the Windows® Start button for newer versions of Windows 10.
Select Control Panel.
Under Hardware and Sound, select View devices and printers.
Right-click the name of the printer, and then select Printer Properties.
Click the Device Settings tab.
Select Update Now. Or, in the drop-down menu next to Automatic Configuration, select Update Now.
Newer HP PCL-6 V4 drivers do not support Update Now. For these drivers, stop and restart the print spooler. Open a search box. In the search box, type services, and then press the Enter key. Right-click Print Spooler in the list of services, select Stop, and then right-click and select Start. Or, simply shut down and restart the computer.
Windows® 7:
Make sure the printer is turned on and connected to the computer or a network.
Open the Windows® Start menu, and then click Devices and Printers.
Right-click the name of the printer, and then select Printer Properties.
Click the Device Settings tab.
Select Update Now. Or, in the drop-down menu next to Automatic Configuration, select Update Now.
