If the printer is having copy quality problems, try the following solutions in the order presented to resolve the issue.

Try these few simple steps first:

Use the flatbed scanner rather than the document feeder
Use high-quality originals
When using the document feeder, load the original document into the feeder correctly, and make sure to adjust the paper guides, to avoid unclear or skewed images

If the problem still exists, try these additional solutions.

Check the scanner glass for dirt and smudges

Over time, specks of debris might collect on the scanner glass and white plastic backing, which can affect performance. Use the following procedure to clean the scanner if the printed pages have streaks, unwanted lines, black dots, poor print quality, or unclear text.

In addition to the steps below, you can view the following video of how to clean the scanner glass.

Note:

The printer model referenced in this video might be different from your printer model, but the steps still apply.

Press the Power button to turn off the printer, and then disconnect the power cable from the electrical outlet.

Open the scanner lid.

Clean the scanner glass (callout 1) and the document feeder strips (callouts 2 and 3) with a soft cloth or sponge that has been moistened with nonabrasive glass cleaner.

CAUTION:
Do not use abrasives, acetone, benzene, ammonia, ethyl alcohol, or carbon tetrachloride on any part of the printer; these can damage the printer. Do not place liquids directly on the glass or platen. They might seep and damage the printer.

Note:
If you are having trouble with streaks on copies when you are using the document feeder, be sure to clean the small strips of glass on the left side of the scanner.

Clean the scanner
Dry the glass and white plastic parts with a chamois or a cellulose sponge to prevent spotting.
Connect the power cable to an outlet, and then press the Power button to turn on the printer.

Make adjustments from the printer control panel

You can calibrate the scanner and configure settings from the printer control panel. Try the copy job again after you make each adjustment.

The steps vary according to the type of control panel.

FutureSmart 3 touchscreen control panel

FutureSmart 4 or 5 touchscreen control panel

Calibrate the scanner

If the document feeder copies are not positioned correctly on the page, try these steps to calibrate the scanner.

Find your control-panel type in the options below, and then follow the steps provided.

FutureSmart 3

Follow these steps if your printer has a FutureSmart 3 touchscreen control panel.

From the Home screen on the printer control panel, scroll to and touch the Device Maintenance button.
Open the following menus:
1. Calibration/Cleaning
2. Calibrate Scanner
Touch the Next button.
Follow the on-screen prompts to complete the calibration process.

FutureSmart 4 or 5

Follow these steps if your printer has a FutureSmart 4or 5 touchscreen control panel.

From the Home screen on the printer control panel, swipe until the Support Tools app displays. Touch the Support Tools app to open the menu.
Open the following menus:
1. Maintenance
2. Calibration/Cleaning
3. Calibrate Scanner
Touch Start to start the calibration process. Follow the on-screen prompts.
Wait while the printer calibrates, and then try copying again.

Check the paper settings

Try these steps if copied pages have smears, fuzzy or dark print, curled paper, or areas where pigment has dropped out.

Check the paper size and type configuration

Find your control-panel type in the options below, and then follow the steps provided.

FutureSmart 3

Follow these steps if your printer has a FutureSmart 3 touchscreen control panel.

From the Home screen on the printer control panel, touch Trays.
Touch the line for the tray, and then touch the Modify button.
Touch the paper size and paper type from the lists of options.
Touch the OK button to save the selection.

FutureSmart 4 or 5

Follow these steps if your printer has a FutureSmart 4 or 5 touchscreen control panel.

From the Home screen on the printer control panel, touch Copy.
Touch Options in the lower left corner, and then scroll to and touch Paper Selection in the list of options.
On the right side of the screen, select settings for Paper Size, Paper Type, and Paper Tray.
Touch Done to save the settings.

Check the image-adjustment settings

Adjust these additional settings to improve copy quality.

Sharpness: Clarify or soften the image. For example, increasing the sharpness could make text appear crisper, but decreasing it could make photos appear smoother.
Darkness: Increase or decrease the amount of white and black used in colors in scanned images.
Contrast: Increase or decrease the difference between the lightest and the darkest color on the page.
Background Cleanup: Remove faint colors from the background of scanned images. For example, if the original document is printed on colored paper, use this feature to lighten the background without affecting the darkness of the image.
Automatic Tone: Available for Flow printers only. For original documents that have at least 100 characters of text on the page, the printer can detect which edge is the top of the page, and it orients the scanned images appropriately. If some of the pages are upside-down in relation to the other pages, the resulting scanned image has all pages right-side-up. If some of the pages have a landscape orientation, the printer rotates the image so that the top of the page is at the top of the image.

FutureSmart 3

Follow these steps if your printer has a FutureSmart 3 touchscreen control panel.

From the Home screen on the printer control panel, touch Copy.
Touch the Image Adjustment button.
Adjust the sliders to set the levels, and then touch the OK button.

FutureSmart 4 or 5

Follow these steps if your printer has a FutureSmart 4 or 5 touchscreen control panel.

From the Home screen on the printer control panel, touch Copy.
Touch Options in the lower left corner, and then touch Image Adjustment.
Adjust the sliders to set the levels, and then touch Done.

Optimize copy quality for text or pictures

Optimize the copy quality for the type of image being copied.

Text: For documents that contain mostly text. This option is also best suited for scanning documents with highlighter marks.
Mixed: For documents that contain a mix of text and graphics
Printed Picture: For line drawings and preprinted images, such as magazine clippings or pages from books. If you see bands of irregular intensity on copies, try selecting Printed Picture to improve the quality.
Photograph: For photographic prints

Find your control-panel type in the options below, and then follow the steps provided.

FutureSmart 3

Follow these steps if your printer has a FutureSmart 3 touchscreen control panel.

From the Home screen on the printer control panel, touch Copy.
Touch the More Options button, and then touch the Optimize Text/Picture button.
Select one of the predefined options, or touch the Manually adjust button, and then adjust the slider in the Optimize For area.
Touch the OK button.

FutureSmart 4 or 5

Follow these steps if your printer has a FutureSmart 4 or 5 touchscreen control panel.

From the Home screen on the printer control panel, touch Copy.
Touch Options in the lower left corner, and then touch Optimize Text/Picture.
Touch one of the predefined options.

Edge-to-edge copying

Use this feature to avoid shadows that can appear along the edges of copies when the original document is printed close to the edges.

FutureSmart 3

Follow these steps if your printer has a FutureSmart 3 touchscreen control panel.

From the Home screen on the printer control panel, scroll to and touch the Copy button.
Touch the More Options button, and then touch the Edge-to-Edge button.
Touch the Edge-To-Edge output option if the original document is printed close to the paper edges.
Touch the OK button.

FutureSmart 4 or 5

Follow these steps if your printer has a FutureSmart 4 or 5 touchscreen control panel.

From the Home screen on the printer control panel, touch Copy.
Touch Options in the lower left corner, and then touch Edge-to-Edge.
Touch the Edge-To-Edge output option if the original document is printed close to the paper edges.

Clean the pickup rollers and separation pad in the document feeder

Follow these steps if the printed pages have toner smudges or skewed print.

In addition to the steps below, you can view the following video of how to clean the rollers and the separation pad in the document feeder.

Open the document-feeder cover.

Open the document-feeder cover
Remove any visible lint or dust from each of the feed rollers and the separation pad using compressed air or a clean, lint-free cloth moistened with warm water.

Clean the rollers and the separation pad
Close the document-feeder cover.

Note:
Verify that the latch on the top of the document-feeder cover is completely closed.
