HP Desktop PCs - Testing the hard drive using SMART

When SMART is enabled, the SMART status check for all hard drives is automatically performed every time the computer is turned on or restarted.

For a more thorough test, you can perform a SMART Short Self-Test and an SMART Extended Self-Test.

For more information about accessing and using BIOS and BIOS settings, see HP Desktop PCs - BIOS Setup Utility Information and Menu Options.

Perform a SMART test

To run the SMART test from BIOS, complete these steps.

  1. Turn on the computer.

  2. Immediately and repeatedly press the f10 key, about once every second, until the BIOS Setup utility opens.

  3. Use the arrow keys to select a hard drive from the list, and then press Enter.

  4. Select SMART Support, and then press Enter.

  5. Select one of the following hard drive device tests:

    • SMART Status Check: Checks the hard drive SMART status. Displays whether SMART support is enabled or disabled.

    • SMART Short Self-Test: Runs a short self-test on the hard drive.

    • SMART Extended Self-Test: Runs an extended self-test on the hard drive. This may take some time.

  6. Press Enter to start the test. The test begins and the test status displays.

  7. Press Esc when the test is complete.

    Note:

If the test fails, copy the data from the failed hard drive, and then replace the hard drive.
