HP Business Notebook PCs - Improve webcam image quality

You can troubleshoot the lighting, color balance, and performance of The Hybrid Webcam Sensor, available on select HP commercial notebooks.

The Hybrid Webcam Sensor merges two traditional sensors, known as the RGB sensor and the Infrared sensor, into a single camera sensor. The sensor enables you to use your webcam for applications and features that require infrared imaging, such as Windows Hello face authentication.

The Face Auto-Exposure feature included on computers with The Hybrid Webcam Sensor helps keep your face in focus. If the image exposure level is set based on the light source behind you, your image can become very dark on the camera. To help prevent this issue, position yourself directly in front of the camera, adjust the webcam lighting according to the following information, and then update your BIOS.

Troubleshoot webcam lighting and color balance issues

The light source and light intensity can impact the image quality your webcam produces.

If you see discoloration in the webcam image, or if images are too light or too dark, try changing the light source and light intensity.

Some light sources that contain a high amount of infrared light and can impact The Hybrid Webcam Sensor include the following:

  • Standard incandescent lightbulbs

  • Halogen lightbulbs

  • Sunlight at its peak hour of brightness

These light sources can be swapped out with lightbulbs that have lower levels of infrared light, such as LED or fluorescent lightbulbs.

Light intensity is another factor that can affect the image quality. Light intensity is based on the distance from the light source to the image being captured through the sensor. Moving a light source that is directly shining on you (such as a desk lamp) further away from the sensor can have a significant improvement on the image quality.

Update the PC with HP Support Assistant

Use HP Support Assistant to find and install updates, including BIOS updates, for your computer with Windows.

  1. In Windows, search for and open HP Support Assistant, or click the app icon in the taskbar.

If the app is not installed on your computer, download the latest version from the HP Support Assistant website.

  2. On the My Dashboard tab, find your computer, and then click Updates.

  3. Wait while HP Support Assistant analyzes the system.

  4. After the analysis completes, select the listed updates, download and install the updates, and then follow any on-screen instructions.

  5. If prompted, restart the computer, and then close the tool.
