HP Printers - An 'Ink System Failure' or 'System Supply Problem' Error Displays

Resolve an Ink System Failure or System Supply Problem error.

Troubleshooting these errors differs by the type of ink cartridges your printer uses. Identify your cartridge type for steps to resolve the issue.

HP ink cartridge models

Resolve 'Ink System Failure','System Supply Problem' Errors (178, 364, 564, 655, 862, 902-920, 934, 935 ink cartridges)

Resolve an 'Ink System Failure' or 'System Supply Problem' message for printers that use HP 178, 364, 564, 655, 862, 902, 903, 904, 905, 906, 907, 908, 909, 910, 912, 914, 915, 916, 917, 918, 919, 920, 934, and 935 cartridges.

Reset the printer

Reset the printer to recover from printer errors or failures.

  1. With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the printer.

  2. Unplug the power cord from the power source.

  3. Wait 60 seconds.

  4. Reconnect the power cord to a wall outlet and to the printer.

    Note:

    HP recommends plugging the printer directly into a wall outlet.

  5. Turn on the printer to complete the reset.

Clean the ink cartridge vents

Glue residue from the label or debris on the cartridge vent might cause an error.

  1. Open the door or lid to the cartridge access area. Wait until the carriage stops moving before continuing.

  2. Push in the tab on a cartridge, and then pull the cartridge from the slot.

    CAUTION:

    Do not leave the cartridges outside the printer longer than 30 minutes. Doing so can result in damage to both the printer and the cartridges.

  3. If the cartridge has the orange pull-tab attached, remove it.

  4. Use a pin or paper clip to remove any debris or excess adhesive from the vent on top of the cartridge.

  5. Reinsert the cartridge into its color-coded slot, and then press down on it until it snaps into place.

  6. Repeat these steps to clean the vent on the other cartridges.

Replace all ink cartridges

Install a new set of cartridges to resolve certain ink system-related errors.

  1. For best results, replace all cartridges with genuine HP cartridges. To find your cartridge number and purchase HP ink supplies, go to the HP Store or a local retailer.

    Note:

    If you have defective HP cartridges, they might be under warranty. Go to About Original HP Cartridges for page yield and HP limited warranty information.

  2. Open the door or lid to the cartridge access area. Wait until the carriage stops moving before continuing.

  3. Remove a cartridge, and then insert the new cartridge into the slot.

  4. Repeat these steps to replace the other cartridges.

Check if the printhead is replaceable

If the ink cartridge carriage has a latch, order a replacement printhead.

  1. Open the door or lid to the cartridge access area. Wait until the carriage stops moving before continuing.

  2. Look for a latch on the carriage.

    • If there is no latch, the printhead is not replaceable. Go to Contact HP Customer Support to schedule a product repair or replacement. If you are in Asia Pacific, you will be directed to a local service center in your area. To confirm your warranty status, go to HP Product Warranty Check. Repair fees might apply for out-of-warranty products.

    • If there is a latch, continue to the next step.

  3. Go to the HP Parts Store.If you are in Asia Pacific, the site directs you to a service center in your area.

  4. Search for your printhead number.

    • If your printer uses four ink cartridges, search for CN643A.

    • If your printer uses five ink cartridges, search for CN642A.

  5. Follow the steps to order the printhead.

    Note:

    If you have a defective printhead, it might be under warranty. Go to About Original HP Cartridges for HP limited warranty information.

  6. Install the replacement printhead. If the issue persists, service the printer.

Resolve 'Ink System Failure','System Supply Problem' Errors (932, 933, 950, 951-959, 962-969 ink cartridges)

Resolve an 'Ink System Failure' or 'System Supply Problem' message for printers that use HP 932, 933, 950, 951, 952, 953, 954, 955, 956, 957, 958, 959, 962, 963, 964, 965, 966, 967, 968, and 969 cartridges.

Perform the following tasks in the order given. Try using the printer after each task to see if the issue is resolved.

Reset the printer

Reset the printer to recover from printer errors or failures.

  1. With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the printer.

  2. Unplug the power cord from the power source.

  3. Wait 60 seconds.

  4. Reconnect the power cord to a wall outlet and to the printer.

    Note:

    HP recommends plugging the printer directly into a wall outlet.

  5. Turn on the printer to complete the reset.

Remove and reinsert the ink cartridges

Make sure the cartridges are seated properly in the carriage.

  1. Turn on the printer, and then open the door or lid to the cartridge access area.

  2. Wait until the carriage is idle and silent before you continue.

  3. Push the ink cartridge to remove it, and then push it into its slot until it snaps into place.

  4. Repeat these steps to remove and reinsert the other cartridges.

  5. Close the door or lid to the cartridge access area.

Replace all ink cartridges

Install a new set of cartridges to resolve certain ink system-related errors.

If the printer has a removable printhead, order a new one. Otherwise, follow the steps provided to service the printer.

  1. Open the door or lid to the cartridge access area. Wait until the carriage stops moving before continuing.

  2. Look for a latch on the carriage.

    • If there is no latch, the printhead is not replaceable. Go to Contact HP Customer Support to schedule a product repair or replacement.     • If there is a latch, continue to the next step.

  3. Go to the HP Parts Store. If you are in Asia Pacific, the site directs you to a service center in your area.

  4. Search for your printhead number.

    • For 950 and 951 cartridges, search for CR322A (Americas), CR324A (Europe, Middle East, Africa), or CR326A (Asia Pacific, Japan).

    • For 952-959 cartridges, search for M0H91A.

    • For 962-969 cartridges, search for 3JB16A.

  5. Follow the steps to order the printhead.

    If you have a defective printhead, it might be under warranty. Go to About Original HP Cartridges for HP limited warranty information.

  6. Install the replacement printhead.

Resolve 'Ink System Failure','System Supply Problem' Errors (02, 17, 363, 801 ink cartridges)

Resolve an 'Ink System Failure' or 'System Supply Problem' message for printers that use HP 02, 17, 363, and 801 cartridges.

Perform the following tasks in the order given. Try using the printer after each task to see if the issue is resolved.
