Setting up the printer (hardware) (x model)

This document explains how to set up the physical parts of the printer. Complete these steps before installing the printer software on the computer.
If the printer hardware is already set up, see the Links to software installation instructions section at the end of this document for help with software installation.
Use the following steps to set up the printer:
  1. Unpack the printer:
    1. Select a site to place the printer that meets the following specifications:
      • A sturdy work surface in a well-ventilated and dust-free area, and away from direct sunlight
      • Temperature range: 10° - 32.5° C
      • Humidity range: 10% - 80%
      • Sufficient space around the printer to open all doors and trays
          caution:
        The printer weighs 18.3 kg 40.3 lb. HP recommends that two people move the printer.

    2. Take the HP printer out of the box, and then verify that the contents match this illustration:

    3. Remove all tape and packing material from the printer.
      note:
      HP recommends recycling the packaging materials.

    4. Place the paper feeder on a stable surface, and then place the printer on top of the paper feeder. Press down on the lever to lock the printer into place on top of the feeder.

  2. Insert the cartridges:
    1. Press the top-cover-release button on the left side of the printer.

    2. Open the front door.

    3. Remove the toner cartridge from its protective shell by tearing off the plastic strip and opening the package.
      note:
      HP recommends recycling the packaging materials.

    4. Hold both ends of the toner cartridge and rock it 5-6 times.

    5. Align the toner cartridge with its slot, and then insert the toner cartridge into the printer.

    6. Close the front door.

  3. Load paper in Tray 2:
    The following information describes how to load paper into Tray 2.
    note:
    The procedure to load paper for all 550-sheet trays is the same as for Tray 2. Only Tray 2 is shown here.
      caution:
    Do not extend more than one paper tray at a time.
    Do not use a paper tray as a step.
    Keep hands out of paper trays when closing.
    All trays must be closed when moving the printer.
    1. Open Tray 2 by pulling it out and lifting up slightly to remove it from the printer.

    2. Adjust the paper-length and paper-width guides by squeezing the adjustment latches and sliding the guides to the size of paper being used.

    3. Load paper into the tray and verify that the paper guides lightly touch the stack, but do not bend it.
      note:
      Make sure the top of the stack is below the tray-full indicator.

    4. Insert the tray into the printer and push gently to close it.

  4. Connect the network cable (optional):
    If the printer is to be connected to a network, connect the network cable now. If not, continue to the next step.
    note:
    A network cable is not included with the printer.

      caution:
    Do not connect a USB cable now. To use a USB cable to connect the printer to the computer, connect it when prompted during software installation.

  5. Connect the power cable and turn on the printer:
    1. Connect the power cable between the printer and a grounded AC outlet.
      note:
      To prevent damage to the printer, use only the power cable that is provided with the printer.
        caution:
      Make sure your power source is adequate for the printer voltage rating. The voltage rating is on the printer label. The printer uses either 100-127 Vac or 220-240 Vac and 50/60 Hz.

    2. Press the Power button to turn on the printer.

    3. Wait for 60 seconds before continuing. During this time, if the printer is connected to a network, the network recognizes the printer and assigns an IP address or host name to the printer.
    4. On the control panel Initial Setup screen, set the language, the date/time format, and the time zone.
      You can complete advanced setup for network-connected printers from the Embedded Web Server (EWS) at any time after the printer IP address is established. To find the IP address on the printer control panel, touch the Information icon, and then touch the Network icon. To open the EWS, enter the printer IP address in the address bar of a web browser.
      note:

  6. Enable the USB port:
    The USB port is disabled by default and must be enabled from the printer control panel.
    1. From the Home screen on the printer control panel, swipe right, and then touch Settings.
    2. Touch General > Enable Device USB > Enabled.
    3. Follow the instructions for your operating system:
      note:
      A USB cable is not included with the printer.
      • Windows: Do not connect the USB cable until prompted during the software installation. Continue to the next step.
      • Mac: Connect the USB cable now.
  7. Verify that the printer functions:
    To verify that the printer functions, complete the following steps:
    1. From the Home screen on the printer control panel, touch Reports.
    2. Select Configuration/Status Pages.
    3. Select Configuration Page, and then select Print to print the Configuration and Jetdirect pages.
      If the printer is connected to a network, find the IP address on the Jetdirect page.
      • IPv4: If the IP address is 0.0.0.0, or 192.0.0.192, or 169.254.x.x, manually configure the IP address. Otherwise, the network configuration was successful.
      • IPv6: If the IP address begins with "fe80:", the printer should be able to print. If not, manually configure the IP address.
      note:
      The Configuration Page includes firmware version information that you can refer to when updating the firmware.
  8. Update the printer firmware (optional but recommended):
    HP regularly updates features that are available in the printer firmware. Update the printer firmware to take advantage of the most current features.
    note:
    Check with the network administrator before updating the printer firmware.
    For information on updating the printer firmware, see Update firmware using a USB flash drive or the Embedded Web Server (EWS).

After completing the previous setup steps, install the printer software using one of the following methods:
  • Method one: Download HP Easy Start (Windows and macOS clients)
    1. Go to 123.hp.com/laserjet and click Download.
    2. Follow the onscreen instructions.
  • Method two: Download from product support website (Windows clients and servers)
    1. Go to the product support website www.hp.com/support/ljM507, and then click Software > Drivers.
    2. Download the software for your printer model and operating system.
      note:
      Windows - Driver - Product Installation Software for clients, Basic Drivers V3 and V4 for clients and servers.
    3. Launch the software file from the folder where the file was saved, and follow the on-screen instructions.
  • Method three: IT managed setup (Windows only - clients and servers)
    Visit hp.com/go/upd to download and install the HP Universal Print Driver.
