HP ENVY 5540, DeskJet 5570 Printers - First Time Printer Setup

This document is for the HP ENVY 5540, 5541, 5542, 5543, 5544, 5545, 5546, 5547, 5548 All-in-One, and DeskJet Ink Advantage 5575 printers.
Before you install the printer software on your computer, unpack the printer, set up the printer, and install and align the ink cartridges.

Step 1: Unpack the printer

Remove the printer from the box, then remove all packing materials from the printer.
  1. Remove the printer from the box.
  2. Remove all tape and packing materials from the outside of the printer.

  3. Remove the sticker from the printer control panel.
  4. Lift up the scanner lid.

  5. Remove all tape and packing materials from the scanner glass.
  6. Close the scanner lid.
  7. Open the ink cartridge access door by placing two fingers under one or both of the small handles on the sides of the ink cartridge access door and then lifting it up.
  8. Remove all tape and packing materials from inside the printer.

  9. Close the ink cartridge access door.

  10. Grasp the handle on the bottom of the paper tray, then pull to open the tray.
  11. Lift up and pull out the output tray, then remove all tape and packing materials from the photo tray.

  12. With the paper tray pulled out, push in the photo tray.

  13. Slide out the paper width guides, then remove all tape and packing materials from inside the paper tray.

  14. Replace the output tray on the paper tray, then push in the paper tray until it locks into place.

  15. Discard or recycle the packing materials.

Step 2: Check the contents of the box

Make sure you remove all hardware and materials from the box before discarding or recycling the box.
The contents might vary by country/region. See the packaging for a list of items shipped in the box.

Step 3: Connect the power cord and set your preferences

Plug the printer into a power source, turn on the printer, then select the language you want to display on the control panel.
  caution:
Do not connect a USB cable at this time. The printer prompts you to connect the USB during the software installation.
  1. Connect the power cord to the rear of the printer, then plug the other end of the power cord into an electrical outlet.

  2. Turn on the printer.
  3. On the printer control panel, touch your preferred language, then touch OK to confirm your choice.
  4. Touch your specific country/region, then touch OK.

Step 4: Install the ink cartridges

Install the HP ink cartridges that are included in the box with your printer. Make sure to install ink cartridges that are compatible with your printer and that they are unmodified, genuine HP ink cartridges.
  1. Open the ink cartridge access door by placing two fingers under one or both of the small handles on the sides of the ink cartridge access door and then lifting it up. The Door Open screen displays on the printer control panel with the message 'The ink cartridge access door is open. Close the door to continue.'

  2. Remove one of the ink cartridges from its package. Be careful to only touch the black plastic on the ink cartridge.

  3. Remove the protective tape.
      caution:
    Do not touch the copper-colored contacts or the ink nozzles. Do not replace the protective tape on the contacts. Handling these parts can result in clogs, ink failure, and bad electrical connections.

  4. Find the ink cartridge carriage on the right side of the printer, slide the new ink cartridge into the empty slot in the carriage, then gently push in the ink cartridge until it snaps into place.
    • Insert the tri-color ink cartridge into the left slot.
    • Insert the black ink cartridge into the right slot.

  5. Repeat these steps to install the other ink cartridge.
  6. Close the ink cartridge access door. When the door is completely closed, the Door Open message disappears, and the printer control panel returns to the Home screen.

  7. Touch OK.
  8. Wait for the printer to complete the calibration cycle.

Step 5: Load paper into the paper tray

Before you install the ink cartridges, load the paper tray with plain white U.S. letter or A4-size paper.
  1. Grasp the handle on the bottom of the input tray, and then pull the tray toward you to open it.

    The Close Tray screen displays on the printer control panel with the message, 'A paper tray is open. Make sure the paper you want to use is loaded, and then close the tray to continue.'
  2. With the paper tray pulled out, push in the photo tray as far as possible.

  3. Slide out the paper width guides as far as possible.

  4. Load plain white paper U.S. letter or A4-sized paper into the paper tray.
  5. Push the stack of paper toward the rear of the paper tray until the paper stops.

  6. Gently slide in the paper width guides until they lightly rest against the edges of the paper.
  7. Push in the paper tray until it locks into place.

  8. Wait while the printer automatically prints an alignment page.
  9. If the alignment page does not print, follow these steps to complete the alignment:
    1. On the printer control panel, swipe to the left, and then touch Setup .
    2. Touch Tools, and then touch Align Printer.
  10. Lift the scanner lid, then place the alignment page with the print side down on the scanner glass. Position the alignment page according to the engraved guides around the glass.
  11. Close the scanner lid, then touch OK.
    The printer scans the alignment page, completing the alignment.
  12. Touch Finish, and then discard or recycle the alignment page.

Step 6: Install the printer software

Your HP printer hardware is now set up and you can install the printing software. Do not attempt to connect the printer to a computer until instructed to do so in the printing software.
