HP Officejet J6400 All-in-One Series - Horizontal Streaks or Lines in the Printed Image

Issue

The product is working, but the printed output shows horizontal streaks or lines. The lines are perpendicular to the direction the paper moved through the product (and parallel to the movement of the cartridges during printing).

Solution one: Make sure the paper is appropriate for the print job

  • Many papers have printing and non-printing sides. Load the paper with the printing side down.
  • Use the correct paper type for the project. For everyday documents, plain paper works well. For documents with dense printing, such as high-contrast graphics or photographs, use HP Advanced paper for the best results.
  • If these steps do not help, try a different paper. Ink might not bleed as easily on heavier paper. Paper that does not accept ink well is also prone to bleeding and smearing. HP designs its inks and papers to work together.

Solution two: Check estimated ink level

Follow these steps to check the estimated ink levels using HP Toolbox.
  1. Make sure the product is on and connected to the computer.
  2. Open HP Solution Center.
    • Windows XP: On the Windows taskbar, click Start, click All Programs, point to HP, and then click HP Solution Center.
    • Windows Vista: On the Windows taskbar, click the Windows icon (), click All Programs, click HP, and then click HP Solution Center.
    • Windows 2000: On the Windows taskbar, click Start, click Programs, point to HP, and then click HP Solution Center.
  3. Click Settings.
  4. Point to Print Settings, and then click Printer Toolbox. Printer Toolbox opens.
  5. Check the ink levels displayed on the Estimated Ink Levels tab.

Solution three: Check the print settings

  1. In the software that is being used to print from, click File, and then click Print.
    The Print window opens.
  2. Make sure that the appropriate product is selected, and then click Preferences.
    The Printing Preferences window opens.
  3. Click the Features tab.
    Options on the Features tab include the following:
    • Print quality: If the quality of the printouts is not as good as expected, try increasing the print quality. To print more quickly, try decreasing the print quality.
    • Paper type: Click the drop-down box. If one of the options matches the paper type exactly, click it rather than Automatic.
    • Size: Make sure the paper size matches the paper being used.

Solution four: Check for defects using a diagnostic page

If these steps have not helped, print and evaluate a diagnostic page to see if the print cartridges are causing the problem.

Step one: Print a diagnostic page

Follow these steps to print a self-test diagnostic page.
  1. Press Setup.
  2. Use the right arrow button () to highlight Print Report, and then press the OK button.
  3. Use the right arrow button () to highlight Self-Test Report, and then press the OK button.

Step two: Note which cartridges printed which areas of the diagnostic page

Identify which cartridge printed which part of the diagnostic page, so that if you find defects on the page, you know which cartridge is the problem.
Because you can install different combinations of print cartridges in your printer, different patterns will show on the diagnostic page. However, the right and left cartridges print in the same areas of the page no matter which cartridges are installed.

note:
If you are printing in reserve mode (one cartridge is missing), the area of the diagnostic page where that cartridge prints is blank.
The patterns in each area might look slightly different on your page.

Step three: Check for defects using a diagnostic page

In general, if the printer and print cartridges are working properly, the patterns (which look like grids of lines) contain few or no missing lines. Also, the colors of the patterns and bars should be approximately the same as the color dots on the print cartridge label.
note:
Do not compare the colors on the diagnostic page to the colors on this Web page. Unless your monitor is calibrated, the colors are not correct. Instead, compare the colors on the page to the color dots on the print cartridge label. While the color dots might not be perfectly accurate, they are likely to be more accurate than the colors on the monitor.

Missing lines or streaked bars

If a pattern shows more than a few missing lines, or a bar is streaked, that print cartridge is not functioning properly.

Color mix

If the color of the patterns or bars is different from the color dots on the cartridge label, the cartridge is not functioning properly.

Missing colors

If any of the color blocks or patterns is entirely missing, the cartridge is not functioning properly.

Ink smears

If the diagnostic page shows smeared ink, you might need to clean the cartridges.

Step five: Service your product

Service or replace your HP product if the issue persists after completing all the preceding steps.
Go to Contact HP Customer Support to schedule a product repair or replacement. If you are in Asia Pacific, you will be directed to a local service center in your area.
