HP Inkjet 915 All-in-One Series - Clear a Paper Jam

Issue

During printing, the HP All-in-One stops feeding pages.

Solution

Regular paper, envelopes, or specialty media may get stuck or jammed in the printer. Follow the instructions below to find and remove jammed paper (or other media) from the printer. If the HP All-in-One has a paper jam, first check the rear door. If the jammed paper is not in the rear rollers, check the front door.

Step one: Check for and remove any paper stuck in the paper In tray

  1. Remove all loose paper from the paper In tray.
  2. Press the RESUME button.
    • If the paper jam is cleared, skip to Step four.
    • If the paper is still jammed, continue on to the next step below.
  3. If more than one sheet is stuck in the printer, remove the paper, one sheet at a time by taking hold of a sheet in the middle of the stack and, with both hands and firm, even pressure, pull the sheet towards you. Usually, removing one or two sheets from the middle of the stack will release the pressure and the rest of the stack can be removed.
  4. After removing the paper, check to make sure no scraps of paper are stuck in the printer.
    • If the paper jam is cleared, skip to Step four.
    • If the paper is still jammed, continue on to the next section.

Step two: Clearing a paper jam from the back of the printer

If the paper jam is not accessible from the In tray, follow the instructions below to clear the paper from the back of the printer.

Remove the rear access door to clear the paper jam

  1. Unplug the HP All-in-One.
  2. Press in the tab on the left side of the rear door to release the door. Remove the door by pulling it away from the HP All-in-One.

  3. Gently pull the paper out of the rollers.
      caution:
If the paper tears when while removing it from the rollers, check the rollers and wheels for torn pieces of paper that might be remaining inside the device. If all of the pieces of paper are not removed from the HP All-in-One, more paper jams are likely to occur.
  4. Replace the rear door. Gently push the door forward until it snaps into place.
  5. Press Cancel to continue the current job.
    • If the paper jam is cleared, skip to Step four.
    • If the paper is still jammed, continue on to the next section.

Step three: Lift the front cover and slowly remove any jammed paper

  1. Unplug the power cable.
  2. If necessary, pull the input tray down to open it. Then, lower the print cartridge door.

  3. Gently pull the paper out of the rollers.
      caution:
If the paper tears when while removing it from the rollers, check the rollers and wheels for torn pieces of paper that might be remaining inside the device. If all the pieces of paper are not removed from the HP All-in-One, more paper jams are likely to occur.
  4. Close the print cartridge door.

  5. Plug the power cable into the HP All-in-One.
  6. Turn the power on.
  7. Press Start Copy Black or Start Copy Color to continue the current job.

Step four: Verify the print cartridge carriage can move freely

  1. Unplug the power cable.
  2. Check to see if the print cartridge carriage can move freely from one side of the printer to the other. If the carriage is to the right and out of plain view, skip to Step five. Do not try to force it to move if it is hung up on something.
    note:
Be careful not to force the print cartridge carriage. If the carriage is stuck, forcing it to move will damage the printer.
    • If the carriage moves freely, skip to Step five.
    • If the carriage does not move, continue with the next step below.
  3. Remove the print cartridges.
  4. Gently move the print cartridge to the far right of the printer.
  5. Remove the paper from the paper In tray, but do not remove the drawer.
  6. Remove the rear access door.
  7. With your fingers, rotate the rollers “up” three full rotations.
  8. Push the rear access door back into the printer until it snaps firmly into place.
  9. Replace the print cartridges.
  10. Plug the power cable into the HP All-in-One.
  11. Turn the power on.

Step five: Reload and test the printer

Once the jammed paper is removed, verify that the printer is still functioning properly.
  1. Reload the printer with plain paper.
  2. Perform a self-test by pressing and holding the Resume button until the printer starts printing. A test page should print.

Step six: Service the printer

Perform all the steps mentioned above. If problem persists, service the printer.

Prevent paper jams

Suggestions to avoid paper jams while printing:
  • Do not add paper while the HP All-in-One is printing.
  • Do not put more than 35 sheets of plain paper in the document feeder tray.
  • Do not use paper that is curled, wrinkled, bent, torn, or creased.
  • Do not use paper that is too thin or too thick for the HP All-in-One.
  • Verify that the rear access door is securely fastened.
