HP Photosmart A522, A522xi, A526, and A528 Photo Printers - 'Clear Paper Jam' Message Displays on the LCD

Issue

While printing, the printer stops feeding pages, and a Clear paper jam message displays on the liquid crystal display (LCD).

Solution

Follow the given instructions to find and remove jammed paper from the printer.

Step one: Remove any loose paper

  1. Remove all loose paper from the In tray.
  2. If the paper came part way through the front of the printer, gently pull the paper towards you to remove it.
  3. If more than one sheet is stuck in the printer, remove the paper one sheet at a time. Take hold of a sheet in the middle of the stack and, with both hands and firm, even pressure, pull the sheet towards you. Usually, removing one or two sheets from the middle of the stack releases the pressure so that the remainder of the stack can be removed.
  4. After you have cleared the paper, check to make sure no scraps of paper remain in the printer.

Step two: Clear the jam from the back of printer

If the paper jam is not accessible from the In tray, follow these steps to clear the paper from the back of the printer:
  1. Remove the paper from the input tray.
  2. Pull the input tray down to open the back of the printer. A little force might be required to release the lock.
  3. Gently pull any jammed paper from the back of the printer. Verify that no scraps of paper remain.
  4. Push the input tray up to lock it in position.
note:
If you cannot grasp the edge of the jammed paper to remove it, try the following steps:
  1. Turn off the printer.
  2. Unplug the printer power cord. Wait for about 30 seconds and then plug the power cord in again.
  3. Turn on the printer. The printer checks for paper in the paper path and will automatically eject the jammed paper.

Step three: Reload paper and test the printer

After removing the jammed paper, verify that the printer is still functioning properly.
  1. Reload the printer with 4 x 6 photo paper.
  2. Print a photo from a memory card or the computer.

Step four: Service the printer

Service or replace your HP product if the issue persists after completing all the preceding steps.
Go to Contact HP Customer Support to schedule a product repair or replacement. If you are in Asia Pacific, you will be directed to a local service center in your area.
To confirm your warranty status, go to HP Product Warranty Check. Repair fees might apply for out-of-warranty products.
