SCOPE
The specific notebook PCs affected by this issue are listed in the Hardware Platforms Affected section at the bottom of this advisory.
RESOLUTION
Please use one of the appropriate methods below to resolve the issue listed above:
Incorrect video resolution - displays at 800 x 600
The notebook PC may default to a display resolution of 800 x 600 if the Extended Display Identification Data (EDID) is missing or corrupted. The external display will not be able to properly communicate with the notebook.
The resolution is a one time manual setting of the external display to the desired resolution (1024 x 768).
To manually set the external display to support 1024 x 768, create an external profile by performing the following:
  1. Press fn + F4 until the external display and the notebook PC display both show the Windows desktop.
  2. Click Start, Control Panel and double click Display.
  3. Click the Settings tab and then adjust the Screen resolution slider to 1024x768.
  4. Click OK and then close the Control Panel.
External device has corrupted EDID information or EDID information supported
Check the cable to verify if the EDID pin is broken or missing (please see Figure 1). Verify the external device to ensure the device supports EDID information on the video output port(s).
  note:
Some devices, such as projectors may have a 2nd video port which does not port out EDID information.
Figure : VGA Cable missing EDID Pin
Follow the steps in Incorrect video resolution - displays at 800 x 600 to create an external profile.
No video sync - quality of VGA display cable
Lower quality video cables may be susceptible to noise and may produce distorted or missing video output. Test with a higher quality of VGA cable to resolve this issue.
Length of VGA display cable or segmented VGA display cable
The length of a VGA cable may weaken the VGA signal amplitude causing distorted or no video. Use a VGA Signal Amplifier to strengthen VGA signal amplitude should resolve this particular issue.
Flickering video on external display devices
