Carriage Stall for HP Officejet 6200 Series

Introduction
The document describes how to resolve a carriage stall on the following products:
  • HP Officejet 6200 series
A carriage stall is when the carriage holding the ink cartridge cannot move back and forth inside the printer. You may have a carriage stall if you have one of the following symptoms:
  • "Carriage Jam" or "Carriage Blocked" error message
  • The product will not print
  • Printing stops unexpectedly
  note:
These symptoms may be caused by other issues. The instructions provided below will NOT resolve every issue that may cause these symptoms. Follow the steps below ONLY if you have already diagnosed a carriage stall in your printer.
Resolving carriage stalls
Follow the steps below until the above issue is resolved. All of the following steps may not be necessary to resolve the issue.
Right-click the link below to open a new browser window with specific instructions about how to clear paper jams. When you have completed paper jam removal instructions, return to this point in these instructions to continue resolving a carriage stall.
  1. With the product turned on, open the print cartridge access door. The print carriage might try to move into the access area. If so, allow it to move to that position.
  2. Without turning off the product, unplug the power cord from the back of the product. Unplug the power cord from the power source. The power cord must be unplugged to allow the parts to be moved by hand and to reset the paper feed mechanism, without the risk of an electrical shock.
  3. Looking in through either the print cartridge access door or the output paper tray, make sure the print cartridges are locked into the carriage and have not come loose. Also, make sure that there are no obstructions under or around the carriage to block it from moving.
  4. Make sure the print carriage can move freely across the width of the product by gently pushing the carriage to the left and then to the right. Clear any obstructions found.
You may have to reach through the output paper tray to access the print carriage.
  5. Close the print cartridge access door and plug the power cord back to the back of the product. Plug the power cord into the power source.
  6. Press the On button to turn on the product.
Step two: Ensure correct installation of the front panel overlay
If the front panel overlay, or bezel, is incorrectly installed, the product may indicate a false carriage stall error condition. If the product has not been set up before, ensure correct installation of the front panel overlay by following the instructions below.
If the front panel overlay is already installed, and your printer has been working for some time, do not attempt to re-install the overlay. Press firmly on the overlay to ensure proper installation of the overlay adhesive or pins.
  note:
If the front panel overlay is already installed, proceed to the next step.
  1. Position the control panel overlay above the device.
Figure : Positioning the control panel overlay
  2. Press down firmly on all edges and in the center of the overlay until it snaps into place to secure it.
    Figure : Pressing down firmly
  3. Try the print job again to see if this step resolved the issue.
    • If the issue is resolved, you do not need to continue with the rest of the instructions on this page.
    • If the issue is not resolved, continue to the next step.
Verify that the product is properly connected to a suitable power source by following the instructions below.
  1. Verify that the computer and the all-in-one product have a three-prong power plug.
  2. Unplug the power cable from the back of the all-in-one.
  3. Unplug the product cable from any power strips or surge suppressors, and plug it directly into a grounded (three-prong) wall outlet.
  4. Plug the power cable into the back of the all-in-one.
  5. Try the print job again to see if this step resolved the issue.
    • If the issue is resolved, you do not need to continue with the rest of the instructions on this page.
        note:
If the product prints when plugged directly into a wall outlet while unplugged from any power strips or surge suppressors, the power strip or surge suppressor may not be allowing sufficient voltage to reach the product.
    • If the issue is not resolved, continue to the next step.
A partial reset will return user settings to factory defaults. On some models, language and country/region settings are also reset. Perform a partial reset of the product by following the instructions below.
  1. Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.
  2. Unplug the power cord from the all-in-one.
  3. Press and hold # and 3 while plugging in the power cord.
  4. Plug the power cord back into the wall outlet.
  5. Plug the power cord to the back of the all-in-one.
  6. When reset displays, release both buttons.
  7. Try the print job again to see if this step resolved the issue.
    • If the issue is resolved, you do not need to continue with the rest of the instructions on this page.
    • If the issue is not resolved, continue to the next step.
Step five: Remove and re-install the print cartridges
Improper placement or installation of the product's print cartridges can cause the product to indicate a carriage stall error condition. Ensure correct installation of the print cartridges by following the instructions below.
  1. Make sure the HP all-in-one is on.
      warning:
If the HP all-in-one is off when the print-carriage access door is lifted to access the print cartridges, the HP all-in-one will not release the cartridges for changing. Damage may occur to the HP all-in-one if the print cartridges are not docked safely on the right side when you try to remove them.
  2. Open the print-carriage access door by lifting from the front center of the device, until the door locks into place.
      note:
The print carriage is on the far right side of the HP all-in-one.

  4. Gently pull the print cartridge toward you, out of its slot.
  5. If removing the black print cartridge to install the photo or gray photo print cartridge, store the black print cartridge in the print cartridge protector.
  6. Slide the proper print cartridge forward into the empty slot. Push the print cartridge forward until it clicks into place.
If the print cartridge you are installing has a white triangle on its label, slide the print cartridge into the slot on the left. The label for the slot is green with a solid white triangle on it.
If the print cartridge you are installing has a white square or a white pentagon on its label, slide the print cartridge into the slot on the right. The label for the slot is black with a solid white square and a solid white pentagon on it.
