HP All-in-One and Scanjet Scanners - Resolving 'An Unexpected Internal Error Has Occurred' or 'An Unsupported operation was attempted' Error Messages

Issue

After installing the HP Photo and Imaging software that came with the HP Scanjet 3970 series scanners or the HP Scanjet 8200 Digital Flatbed series scanners (both scanners use version 2.2) on a computer system with any version of the Photo and Imaging Software less than 2.1 already installed, the following error messages may display when trying to scan from the HP Scanjet 3970c.
The following HP Scanjet scanners and HP all-in-one products have been known to have this issue:
  • HP Scanjet 2300 series
  • HP Scanjet 3500 series
  • HP Scanjet 4370 series
  • HP Scanjet 4500 series
  • HP Scanjet 4570 series
  • HP Scanjet 5500 series
  • HP Scanjet 5550 series
  • HP Scanjet 7800 Document Scanner
  • HP Scanjet 8270 Document Flatbed Scanner
  • HP Scanjet 8300 Digital Flatbed Scanner Series
  • HP Scanjet 8300 Professional Image Scanner
  • HP Scanjet 8350 Document Flatbed Scanner
  • HP Scanjet 8390 Document Flatbed Scanner
  • HP PSC 2110
  • HP PSC 2210
  • HP PSC 2175
  • HP PSC 1210

Solution

Remove all previous versions of the HP Photo and Imaging Software and reinstall just the HP Photo and Imaging Software version 2.2 that came with the HP Scanjet 3970c series scanner.

If HP Photo and Imaging 2.2 is not currently installed

Delete KYGRPRes.dll and then install the HP Photo and Imaging 2.2 software.
  1. Double-click theMy computericon.
  2. Double-click the C: drive.
  3. Double-click the Program Files folder.
  4. Double-click the Hewlett-Packard folder.
  5. Double-click the Digital Imaging folder.
  6. Double-click the bin folder.
  7. Locate and click on KYGRPRes.dll to highlight the file.
  8. Press the Delete key on the keyboard. This deletes the file.
  9. Install the Scanning software as outlined on the installation setup poster or click here for instructions if the installation setup poster is unavailable.

IF HP Photo and Imaging 2.2 is currently installed

Delete KYGRPRes.dll and then repair the HP Photo and Imaging 2.2 software.
  1. Double-click theMy computericon.
  2. Double-click the C: drive.
  3. Double-click the Program Files folder.
  4. Double-click the Hewlett-Packard folder.
  5. Double-click the Digital Imaging folder.
  6. Double-click the bin folder.
  7. Locate and click KYGRPRes.dll to highlight the file.
  8. Press the Delete key on the keyboard. This deletes the file.
  9. Run a repair on the scanning software.
    1. Close all open applications.
    2. Insert the the HP Photo and Imaging software installation CD into the CD-ROM drive. The installation program should auto launch. If the installation program does not start automatically, click Start and then Run. In the Run box, type D:\setup.exe (where D is the CD-ROM drive).
    3. Click Install Software.
    4. Select Custom and then click Next.
    5. Place a check in HP Photo and Imaging Software and click Next.
    6. Click Next. The InstallShield Wizard opens.
    7. Follow the on screen prompts, selecting to Repair the software.
