HP Designjet cc800ps, 815mfp and 4200 Scanner - Printer Selections and Resolutions

Information
This document contains information about printer selections and resolutions in HP Designjet cc800ps.

Printer selections:
There are two different profiles to consider:
  • One created for the software RIP.
  • One created for the HP printer.
When using PCL3GUI or HP RTL in the printer profile, the paths are created to work with the application, the scanner and the printer. When the Windows printer driver is selected, it is the normal driver developed by HP to print.

Selecting maximum performance will send HP-GL/2 – RTL generated by HP; selecting avoid out of memory will send the normal PCL3GUI generated by HP as well.

Format - PCL3GUI:
Image data is compressed with HP's compression algorithm. This requires more PC processing power, but minimizes the amount of data to be transferred to the printer. The HP Designjet cc800ps, 815mfp and 4200 touch screen systems include fast processors and a USB and/or Firewire connection, so PCL3GUI is the perfect choice. Furthermore, PCL3GUI only supports 300 and 600 dpi.

Format - RTL:
Little compression and no restrictions on resolution. More time is needed to process. The printer receives HP-GL/2 – RTL generated by the software RIP, but fully compatible with the HP Designjet 800ps
Control language:
By selecting the HP PJL option, a header is added with the file printing settings (print quality, size, resolution).

Printer resolutions
The printer driver used in the software copying RIP is a generic driver, so it could work with many very different printers. It is a way of describing the printer to other applications.
The scanner is working to a resolution that is a whole fraction of the printer resolution (if 720, the scanner works 360, if 600 scans 300, etc.) in order to get best results.
The printer application must provide this information to the rest of the application. If the resolution in the printer driver is changed to 924 dpi, the rest of the application will tune itself to this number (for example, scans would be made in 924, 462, or 308). Since PCL3GUI only understands 300 or 600 dpi, when a higher resolution is selected, the printer will not be able to understand these resolutions.
