HP Internet Printer Connect Software - IPC, Setting up a Printer

Introduction
There are two ways to set up a printer using the Internet Printer Connection (IPC) Software:
  • The first method is using the Create HP Internet Printer Connection program.
  • The second method is adding a printer port using the Add Printer Wizard in the Printers folder.
Both these methods require that the HP IPC software be installed. HP IPC requires IPP-enabled HP Jetdirect print servers, with firmware revision G.07.15, H.07.15, J.07.15 or newer. To upgrade the Jetdirect firmware, use the HP Download Manager software available on the HP Web site. Click here to download HP Download Manager software to upgrade the Jetdirect firmware.

Using the Create HP Internet Printer Connection program
To set up a printer using the Create HP Internet Printer Connection (IPC) program:
  1. From the Start menu, select Programs, then HP Internet Printer Connection.
  2. Select Create HP Internet Printer Connection.
  3. When the HP IPC installation screen appears, click Next.
  4. Type the HP Jetdirect print server's IP Address, URL, or Host Name.
  5. Type the printer name, or use the default name. The printer name can be changed to any name desired, up to a maximum of 63 characters. The printer name can include any keyboard characters except the exclamation point, backslash, or comma.
      note:
This printer name is only displayed in the Printers folder on the computer where the HP Internet Printer Connection software is installed. It is not displayed in the Printers folder on other computers.
  6. If using a proxy to communicate with the HP Jetdirect print server, click Proxy Settings. On the HTTP Proxy Settings dialog box, type the proxy information. Click OK. If currently using an HTTP proxy setting in your browser configuration, you can specify the same HTTP proxy setting for the proxy name. This proxy may also be a special one that you have configured for Internet printing. The proxy port number is a specific TCP port that the network administrator has assigned for the proxy to run on.
  7. If you plan to share this printer, select Share Printer. The share name is the same as the printer name you specified in Step 6. If you share this printer, you are enabling others to print to the device configured through this workstation.
  8. Click Next.
      note:
If the HP Internet Printer Connection Wizard cannot connect to the address specified, the hourglass (busy) cursor appears for two minutes until the HP Internet Printer Connection Wizard times out, and an error message appears.
  9. If you are using an HP Jetdirect External Multiport print server, a dialog box displays the printers that are available. Select the printer to which you want to connect, and click Next.
  10. A dialog box displays the device address, printer name, and printer model you specified. To automatically send a test page to the printer when the installation is done, select Print Test Page.
  11. Click Next.
  12. To install the printer driver, highlight the manufacturer and printer model, and then click Finish. OR If you have a disk with the printer driver on it, click Have Disk, follow the instructions for installing the driver, and click Finish. This option does not work with drivers that have their own installer. These drivers should be installed before you install the HP Internet Printer Connection printer.
  13. When the installation process complete message appears, click OK.
Adding a printer port using the Windows Add Printer Wizard
You must have the HP Internet Printer Connection (IPC) program installed and have installed a printer using the software in order to have an HP Internet Printer Connection port as an option in the Add Printer Wizard.
  1. Click Start, Settings, and Printers.
  2. Double-click Add Printer to start the Add Printer Wizard.
  3. Select My Computer.
  4. Click Next.
  5. Click Add Port.
  6. Select HP Internet Printer Connection Port from the list of ports.
  7. Click New Port.
  8. Click Next.
  9. Type the HP Jetdirect print server's IP address, URL, or host name.
  10. Type a port name. The port name can be anything you like, up to a maximum of 63 characters. The port name can include any keyboard characters except the exclamation point, backslash, or comma.
  11. If you are using a proxy to communicate with the HP Jetdirect print server, click Proxy Settings. On the HTTP Proxy Settings dialog box, type the proxy information. Click OK. If you are currently using an HTTP proxy setting in your browser configuration, you can specify the same HTTP proxy setting for the proxy name. This proxy may also be a special one that you have configured for Internet printing. The proxy port number is a specific TCP port that the network administrator has assigned for the proxy to run on.
  12. Click Next.
      note:
If the HP Internet Printer Connection Wizard cannot connect to the address you specified, the hourglass (busy) cursor displays for two minutes until the HP Internet Printer Connection Wizard times out, and an error message displays.
  13. If you are using an HP Jetdirect External Multiport print server, a dialog box displays the printers that are available. Select the printer you want to connect to and click Next.
  14. A dialog box displays the device address, port name, and printer model you specified. To continue with the installation, click Finish.
  15. Click Close to close the Printer Ports dialog box and Next to install the printer driver.
  16. To install the printer driver, highlight the manufacturer and printer model, and then click Next on to Finish. OR If you have a disk with the printer driver on it, click Have Disk, follow the instructions for installing the driver, and click Finish. This option does not work with drivers that have their own installer. These drivers should be installed before installing the HP Internet Printer Connection printer.
Troubleshooting
If you cannot print to the printer after installing the HP Internet Printer Connection software, check the following:
  1. Print a self-test page. Make sure the HP Jetdirect print server firmware is at revision G.07.15, H.07.15, or later. If it is not, download the latest firmware upgrade. Click here to download HP Download Manager 3.x.
  2. Make sure the IP address on the HP Jetdirect print server is configured properly and accessible through the Internet.
  3. Make sure the IP address, URL, or host name is specified correctly on the computer.
  4. If the HP Jetdirect external print server supports multiple ports, make sure the port is specified as part of the IP address, URL, or host name. The HP Internet Printer Connection Wizard takes care of this, but if you type the URL manually, make sure it is formatted correctly. You can specify a URL for a printer on the second port (ipp/port2) or the third port (ipp/port3).
  5. If you use a host name instead of an IP address, try using an IP address instead of the host name. Make sure the following is set up correctly on the network. Contact your network administrator if necessary:
    • The Domain Name Service (DNS) is set up correctly on the network and there is a name specified for that host name
    • DNS lookup is enabled. Test this by pinging the hostname. It should reply and with the IP address visible in the reply.
  6. Make sure TCP/IP stack is installed and enabled on the computer as well as the Jetdirect. Print a configuration page from the printer or external Jetdirect to verify that TCP/IP is ready.
  7. If the printer is outside of a firewall or proxy, make sure the proxy name and port number are set up correctly in the port monitor. Also, make sure the proxy supports HTTP v. 1.1 or later. Unless a firewall is specifically configured, IPP print jobs will not be allowed to print in through the firewall.
