HP PCs - Advanced HDMI Display and Sound Troubleshooting (Windows)

This document is for HP computers with an HDMI connector.
This document provides advanced troubleshooting procedures for issues with HDMI display and sound.

Step 1: Perform a hard reset

A hard or forced reset erases all information in the computer's memory, which might resolve HDMI display and sound issues.
When performing a hard reset, you must disconnect or remove all peripheral devices. You should start and test the computer by itself, and then reconnect one peripheral device at a time.

Step 2: Use HP Support Assistant to update the HP device drivers

Update the HP device drivers with HP Support Assistant.
For business computers, go to Using HP SoftPaq Download Manager as this utility provides a quick and easy way to download software and driver updates for HP commercial notebook and desktop PCs.
  1. Go to HP Support Assistant to download and install the HP Support Assistant software, if it is not already installed on your computer.
  2. In Windows, search for and open HP Support Assistant.
  3. On the My devices tab, select your computer from the device list, then click Updates.
     HP Support Assistant
  4. If no updates are listed, click Check for updates and messages.

  5. Wait while HP Support Assistant works.

  6. If updates are available, select the check box next to each device driver you want to update, and then click Download and Install.
    Selecting device drivers
  7. When HP Support Assistant finishes, close it, and then continue to the next step to update your Windows drivers.

Step 3: Use Windows Update to update the Windows device drivers

Find and install updated device drivers for your computer.
  1. Restart your computer to make sure any updates previously downloaded are correctly installed.
  2. In Windows, search for and open Check for updates.
    Windows Update window
  3. Wait for available updates to download, or click Check for updates and wait while Windows searches for and downloads updates (if any are available).
  4. Click Install now, or let Windows choose when to install the updates.
  5. Restart your computer to finish installing the updates.
