HP LaserJet Printers - Cannot Install Printer Software (Windows)

This document is for HP LaserJet printers and computers with Windows.

When attempting to install printer software for your HP LaserJet printer, the software cannot be found, does not open, or fails during the installation process.

Restart the computer, and then try installing the software again. If the problem persists, continue to the next step.

The print spooler service temporarily stores files to be printed in a print queue until the printer is ready to process each print job. If the print spooler service is not running when you install the printer software, it can cause the software installer program to stop without an error message or warning.

1. Search Windows for view local services, and then click the View local services control panel setting in the list of results.
2. Scroll down to Print Spooler, and then make sure the print spooler status is Started.
   
   • If the print spooler service is started, skip to the next step to install the printer software.
   • If the print spooler is not started, continue with these steps.
3. Right-click Print Spooler, and then click Properties.
4. If the Startup type is set to Manual or Disabled, click the drop-down list, click Automatic, and then click Apply.
5. Under Service status, click Start, and then click OK.
6. Restart the computer, and then continue to the next step.

Download and install the latest software for your printer from the HP website.

1. Go to 123.hp.com/laserjet, click Download, and then follow the instructions to download and install the recommended software for you printer.
2. If the software does not open or your printer cannot be found, continue to the next step.

For some HP LaserJet printers, you might have to go to HP Software and Driver Downloads to download and install your printer software.

1. Go to HP Software and Driver Downloads.
2. Type the printer model, and then click Submit.
3. Make sure the operating system is correct.
4. Locate the full feature software and driver, click Download, and then follow the instructions.
5. If the HP installation does not start automatically, find the file (hpsetup.exe) on your computer.
   • For HP LaserJet Pro P1102, P1606dn, and P1566 printers: Open File Explorer, navigate to the C:\ drive, and then find the LJP1000-_1560_P1600_Full_Solution folder.
   • For HP LaserJet Pro M12 printers: Open File Explorer, navigate to the C:\ drive, and then find the LJPM11-M13_Full_Solution folder.
   • For HP LaserJet Pro M1132, M1212-1214, and M1216-1218 printers: Search for and open the %temp% folder. Find the folder with 7z at the beginning of the name (for example, 7zS1234).
6. Double-click hpsetup.exe, and then follow any prompts to install the software.
