HP Designjet Printers - The Error Message "HpSetup Caused a General Protection Fault in Module DDEML.DLL" Is Received when Installing the AutoCAD Windows Driver

Issue:
The AutoCAD Windows driver will not install, or the following error message is received when trying to install the AutoCAD Windows driver: "HpSetup caused a general protection fault in module DDEML.DLL".
Solution
This is usually seen if Norton Desktop is running on top of the Windows Program Manager. The driver will not install while Norton Desktop is running. Norton Desktop must be completely disabled, not just minimized. Then, the AutoCAD Windows driver should install.
Perform the following instructions to temporarily disable Norton Desktop:
  1. Make a backup copy of the System.ini file.
  2. From Program Manager, select File and Run. Type SYSTEM.INI on the command line.
  3. Scroll until you find the line "shell=xxxx.exe".
  4. Place the cursor at the beginning of the line and insert a semicolon (;). This instructs Windows to ignore the statement the next time that it boots up.
  5. Directly beneath this line, insert a new line that reads "shell=progman.exe".
  6. Select File and Close.
  7. Choose OK when asked if you want to save changes.
  8. Exit Windows. Restart Windows.
  9. Reinstall the HP AutoCAD Windows driver.
Once the AutoCAD driver has been successfully installed, Norton Desktop can be re-enabled without further conflict.
  1. From Program Manager, select File and Run. Type SYSTEM.INI on the command line.
  2. Scroll until you find the line ";shell=xxxx.exe".
  3. Place the cursor at the beginning of the line and delete the semicolon (;).
  4. Scroll until you find the line "shell=progman.exe".
  5. Place the cursor at the beginning of the line and insert a semicolon (;). This instructs Windows to ignore the statement the next time that it boots up.
  6. Select File and Close.
  7. Choose OK when asked if you want to save changes.
  8. Exit Windows. Restart Windows.
