HP Notebook PCs - Using HP SimplePass Fingerprint Reader (Windows 7, Vista)

This document pertains to HP Notebook PCs with HP SimplePass Fingerprint Reader.
A fingerprint reader is a security device that uses a scanned image of your fingerprint to authenticate who you are. With fingerprint security software you can log on to applications and secure web sites by scanning your fingerprint instead of typing your Username and password on the keyboard.

To use a fingerprint reader, there must be at least one Windows User account, and that account should require a password to log on to Windows. You can register a new fingerprint or web site at any time.
Enrolling your fingerprints in SimplePass
You enroll your fingerprints by scanning each finger multiple times so the program can capture a consistent image of your finger. It is best to enroll your index finger and at least two other fingers for flexibility. If for example, your index finger is scratched or injured, or even dry and dirty, the reader may not recognize it. You can add or delete additional fingerprints at any time. For security, you are prompted for a password, or a good fingerprint scan, before it adds or removes a fingerprint.
Read one of the following sections to start the fingerprint reader for the first time, or add or delete fingerprints after the initial set up.
 note:
You must have a valid user account on the computer, and enroll the fingerprints for that account, before you can register any password protected sites.
Registering or managing a secure logon account with SimplePass in Windows 7 or Vista
Once a fingerprint is enrolled, you can register and manage a secure logon account for an application or web site. The Password Manager collects the Username, a password, and any other required values for logging in.
Easy setup using SimplePass in Windows 7 or Vista
The easiest way to set up a new password account is to open the HP SimplePass application, and then open the secure application or web site and put them side-by-side on the screen. Follow the steps below to set up a new web site logon.
  1. Use your browser to navigate to a secure web site logon page.
  2. Type your Username and Password on the logon page, and then click the fingerprint logon icon that appears on the secured web site in the browser.

  3. Click OK on the Password Manager screen to save the logon information. If prompted, slide your finger over the fingerprint reader to verify your identity.
You may now log out and close the application window. To test the fingerprint reader password management, go to Testing the SimplePass fingerprint reader password management function in Windows 7 or Vista.
Adding and managing a new application or Web site using SimplePass in Windows 7 or Vista
Follow these steps to add Web site log in information and set your preferences in SimplePass:
  1. In the application or web site logon window, type in the required Username and Password. Select any other required information such as, the Stay signed in option.
  2. Scan your finger to open the Add Logon to Password Manager window.

  3. Type a unique name in the Account Name field or accept the default.
  4. Type in the Username, Password, or other required field values.
  5. Click OK to accept the values and close the window.

Testing the SimplePass fingerprint reader password management function in Windows 7 or Vista
Follow these steps to test the functionality of your SimplePass fingerprint reader and see a list of accounts registered in SimplePass:
  1. Close all applications, and then scan you finger.
  2. If the fingerprint scan is recognized, a list of all the registered accounts displays in the Password Manager.

  3. Double-click on the desired registered account to open the logon window.
  4. To verify your identity, either scan your fingerprint or click Cancel and enter the required information using the keyboard.

Adjusting the SimplePass fingerprint reader sensitivity in Windows 7 or Vista
The image of your fingerprint stored in the program represents the condition of your finger at the time it was scanned. The scan may not be recognized if your skin gets dry, if you press your finger onto the reader distorting the skin, if you move your finger on a slight angle across the scanner, or if you move your finger too fast or slow. The sensitivity of the program can be adjusted to allow for some variation in the fingerprint recognition.
To access the sensitivity settings:
  1. Open HP SimplePass Identity Protection.
  2. Select Fingerprint Reader in the left panel.
  3. Adjust the sensitivity to low, medium, or high.

If changing the setting makes very little difference and you are still having problems with the logon, you may want to delete the original fingerprint image and re-enroll your fingerprint by swiping it across the scanner at a more consistent speed, angle, and pressure.
Using the fingerprint scanner to protect multiple user accounts
The HP SimplePass Fingerprint reader provides easy security protection if multiple people use the same computer. Each person using the computer should have their own user account, and that account can be accessed using a fingerprint reader.
For example, the parent in a family could have an account with administrator privileges allowing them to install new programs, while each of the children has a personal user account with limited privileges to use, but not install programs. Each child's settings and files are protected and are not accessible by their siblings. The parent, as the administrator, has access to all files.
By using a fingerprint reader with HP SimplePass, when one of the children is ready to log in, they simply scan their finger and the security protection program identifies them and logs on to the proper account.
To set up multiple fingerprint user accounts, follow the steps in Enrolling your fingerprints in SimplePass while logged in with each Windows user account.
Backing up and restoring SimplePass fingerprint configuration in Windows 7 or Vista
Many applications and web sites use unique user names and passwords to protect personal identity and data. Although the fingerprint reader can make this job easier, many people have discovered that after using a fingerprint reader, they forget their passwords.
If you are using the fingerprint reader to access several accounts with different user names and passwords, back up your fingerprint reader security data and settings to a removable storage device, such as a USB flash drive, and store it in a secure location, away from the computer.
To backup or restore the fingerprint reader security data and settings:
  1. Open HP SimplePass Identity Protection.
  2. Click onBackup and Restore in the left panel.

  3. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the backup or restore.
Installing or updating required software for SimplePass
The fingerprint reader drivers and the security applications are designed to work on specific models and operating systems. All of the device drivers and security applications designed and approved for the original configuration of your notebook are available on the HP Drivers and Downloads support web site. Follow the steps below to install or update your software.
 note:
The drivers and programs used on one model may not be compatible and may not work with other models.
  1. Go to the HP Drivers and Downloads page for your model.
  2. Follow the on-screen instructions. Enter your model number or product number.
  3. Select Software and Driver downloads.
  4. Click your operating system under Select operating system.
  5. After clicking the operating system, find and select the Software - Security section.
  6. Click on HP SimplePass Identity Protection Software.
  7. Click Download, and then Save the file to convenient location on your hard drive, such as the desktop on the computer.
  8. Double-click the downloaded file and follow the instructions to install the HP SimplePass Identity Protection software.
Updating the BIOS to support SimplePass
The computer's BIOS must support the use of a biometric device and the fingerprint reader option must be enabled in the BIOS. If you have installed the latest version of the HP SimplePass Identity Protection software for your computer and experience problems, download and install the latest BIOS for your computer model. See Updating the BIOS for more information.
