HP Printers - Setting Up and Using an HP Printer (Windows RT)

This document is for HP printers connected to a computer or tablet with Windows RT.
Install the built-in print driver for your HP printer in order to complete print jobs using a computer with Windows RT.
Step 1: Prepare the printer connection
Before installing the built-in print driver, connect the printer to the computer or to your network. Read the connection type for steps to connect the printer.
  • Wireless connection: Make sure the computer has an active network connection, the printer's wireless feature is on, and the printer is connected to the same network as your computer.
Some printers have a wireless icon and a blue light on the front of the printer. Make sure the light is on and not blinking.
  • Wired (Ethernet) connection: Make sure the computer has an active network connection and the printer is on the same network. Check the Ethernet cable and the lights on the printer’s Ethernet port. The green link light should be steady, and the orange activity light should blink when the cable is connected.
  • USB connection: Make sure the computer has a USB port available, and the USB cable is 6 ft or shorter. Do not plug the USB into the computer until instructed.
Step 2: Install the built-in print driver
After connecting the printer to your network or computer, the built-in print driver automatically installs.
  • If you are using a wired (Ethernet) or wireless connection, Windows RT detects the printer on the network and automatically installs the built-in print driver for the printer.
  • If you are using a USB connection, connect a USB cable to the USB port on the printer , and then to the computer. Windows RT locates and automatically installs the built-in print driver for the printer.
If you are having issues installing the built-in print driver, go to What if the print driver did not install automatically in this document.
Step 3: Print a document or photo
Print a document or photo from a Start screen or Desktop app to your printer.
