HP Printers - Windows 8: Using the Printer When Network Device Sharing is Turned Off

Introduction
This document explains how to configure an HP network-connected printer to print when device sharing is disabled in Windows 8.
Using the printer when network device sharing is turned off
Follow these steps in the order presented to configure printing if device sharing is not enabled.
 note:
Some of the following steps require you to restart the computer. Consider bookmarking this page on your Web browser, so that you can reference it after restarting the computer.
Step one: Temporarily enable device sharing
  1. Move the mouse cursor to top or bottom right corner of the screen to open the Charms Bar.
  2. Click Settings, and then click Change PC Settings.
  3. Click Network.
  4. For Ethernet (wired) connections click Network, or for wireless connections click the name of your network under the Wi-Fi heading.
  5. Under Find devices and content, click and hold the slider to turn sharing on.
  6. Restart the printer, and then wait until it is idle and silent.
  7. Restart the computer, and then continue to the next step.
Step two: Open the printer Embedded Web Server (EWS)
Follow these steps to open the EWS. To use the printer and maintain the connection with device sharing off, you will make network settings changes in the EWS in the next step.
  1. Print a Network Configuration Page. The page lists the printer's IP address that you use to open the EWS.
  2. From the desktop, open a web browser (such as Internet Explorer or Chrome).
  3. In the browser address bar, type the IP address listed on the Network Configuration Page, and then press Enter.
     note:
Make sure that you type the IP address into the browser's address box. If you type it into a tool bar search box, the EWS will not open.
The Embedded Web Server (EWS) for the printer opens and confirms that the printer is on the same network as the computer.
Step three: Set a static IP address
While device sharing is temporarily turned on, set a static IP address for the printer in the EWS. This ensures that the printer will retain the network IP address after device sharing is turned off again.
Click the printer's connection type to your network for steps to set a static IP address for the printer.
Step four: Turn device sharing off again
  1. Restart the printer, and then wait until it is idle and silent.
  2. Restart the computer.
  3. Move the mouse cursor to top or bottom right corner of the screen to open the Charms Bar.
  4. Click Settings, and then click Change PC Settings.
  5. Click Network.
  6. For wired (Ethernet) connections click Network, or for wireless connections click the name of your network under the Wi-Fi heading.
  7. Under Find devices and content, click and hold the slider to turn sharing off.
