Webcam May Display Error Message or May Not Launch

This document pertains to HP Notebook PCs with Windows Vista.
On some models of notebooks using Windows Vista, the webcam application may display error messages or may not launch. Most of these errors are caused by conflicts between outdated video software and the webcam drivers.
Typical error conditions include: the camera preview screen may be blue or black, or an error message is displayed. The wording of the error message depends on what software is being used to access the webcam.
Error message: The webcam is being used by another program.
Installing new webcam driver in Vista with Service Pack 2
Microsoft recommends using the Windows Update function to install Vista Service Pack 2 which includes a new webcam driver that resolves many of the webcam errors.
To update launch the Windows Update utility, click Start, enter update in the search field, and select Windows Update from the list.
