HP Notebook PCs - Fan is Noisy and Spins Constantly, PC is Warmer than Normal
This document pertains to HP Notebook PCs that have system fans to remove heat from inside the case.
The electrical components in a computer generate heat, and fans inside the computer help move the air to keep the components from getting too hot. Excess heat will cause the fans to run constantly, damage components, and limit the speed of the CPU. All of these problems with high power and high heat will cause applications to work slower than normal. One of the main functions of the BIOS is to monitor the temperature and adjust the operating conditions. While the sound of the fan running all the time can be annoying, it may be the first clue that your computer is running as efficiently as possible.
To help your computer run as cool and efficiently as possible, do one or more of the following corrective actions.
Updating your Notebook computer BIOS
After computers are released, HP may distribute an updated BIOS to manage the fan, CPU power loads, and other components. To see if there is a newer BIOS update, you should determine what version of the BIOS is currently installed on your computer, and then determine if there is a more recent version available.

Keeping notebook air vents clear and clean
Electrical components inside the computer generate heat while the computer is running. This heat can increase to the point where sensitive electronic components are damaged.
When heat builds up, the fan spins faster to remove the excess heat and thus makes more noise. Notebook computers have vents in the bottom and sides to remove heat, allowing air to flow through the case. If the vents become blocked, the fan cannot cool the components properly (and must spin even faster). If there is dust in the vents, use a can of compressed air to blow dust out of the area inside vents. When the computer is turned on, place it on a hard, level surface keeping the vent areas unobstructed. Using your notebook computer on a cloth surface, such as your lap, a bed, or couch cushion, can block the air flow and cause overheating.

Increasing the efficiency of the notebook to reduce heat
If you have a lot of software open on your computer, your computer works harder and generates more heat. Reduce the amount of heat by increasing the efficiency of your computer.
Prevent software from starting when the computer is started.
Close software programs when you are done using them.
Log off the Internet when you are not actively browsing the Internet.
If your computer gets hot when playing games, try playing the game at a lower resolution and with decreased graphics settings.
Using Windows Task Manager to identify corrupt processes
Consistent CPU load can cause heat buildup in the computer, forcing the fan to run continuously to keep the computer at operating temperatures. This heat buildup might be caused by corrupt software or malware. A corrupt process can consume CPU time anywhere between 1% and 100% of the CPU. Even a low but constant 3% to 4% load can cause the fan to run at a raised level.
Use the following steps to identify corrupt processes that might be consuming CPU time.
Close all open Programs and save your work.

Look through the list for suspect processes.
To find more information about a process, search the Internet using the process name that displays in the Windows Task Manager. Look for information that mentions the issue through other reports and suggests steps for resolving the issue.
Selecting power save settings to shut off your computer when it is not in use
Most operating systems allow you to change power settings. Use these settings to turn off the display when you are not actively using your computer. If you frequently move away from your notebook, then changing the power setting to turn off your monitor when it is not being used can help keep your computer more cool.
