Adding or Replacing a CD/DVD Drive in HP Pavilion Slimline s7000 Series Desktop PCs

This document only pertains to HP Pavilion Slimline PCs with the following PC case:
Before you begin
  • Turn off the PC, disconnect all cables, and transfer the PC to a clear, flat, stable work surface over a non-carpeted floor.
  • HP strongly recommends the use of an anti-static wrist strap and a conductive foam pad when working on the PC.
The edges of metal panels can cut skin. Be careful not to slide skin along any interior metal edge of the computer.
This product contains components that can be damaged by electrostatic discharge (ESD). To reduce the chance of ESD damage, work over a noncarpeted floor, use a static dissipative work surface (such as a conductive foam pad), and wear an ESD wrist strap connected to a grounded surface.
Video overview
View the following video before using the steps in this article.
For best quality on dial-up connections, wait until the video has fully loaded before viewing.
Removing a CD or DVD drive
Use the steps in this section to remove a CD or DVD drive so that an empty bay can be used to install a new drive.
Make sure the computer is disconnected from power before starting.
Step 1. To remove the optical drive, remove the right side panel.
For more information about removing the side panel, refer to the HP support document Opening the PC Case.
Step 2. Remove the fan assembly by pulling up on the middle section of the assembly until it separates from the PC.
Before fully removing the assembly, detach the fan connector from the motherboard.
Do NOT disconnect the ribbon cable from the motherboard. Some PCs have a special ribbon cable that should only be removed from the back of the drive (see next step). Removing the cable from the motherboard can damage the motherboard.
Step 3. Remove data and power cables from the rear of the drive.
Step 4. Remove the thumb screw that holds the CD or DVD drive to the PC drive tray.
Step 5. Slide the drive straight back and then straight up out of the drive tray.
Installing a CD or DVD drive
Use the steps in this section to install a new CD or DVD into an empty drive bay.
Step 1. Make sure that the new drive is set to Cable Select (CS).
Step 2. Attach four screws, two on each side, to the new drive.
Attach the screws in the bottom row of the screw holes.
Step 3. While holding the power and data cables out of the way, lower the drive into the tray and slide it forward into place.
Step 4. Replace the thumb screw that holds the CD or DVD drive to the PC drive tray.
Step 5. Attach the power and flat ribbon cables to the rear of the drive.
Step 6. Replace the side panel and the fan assembly, reconnect all cables, and turn on the PC.
Step 7. If using Windows, wait until Windows fully opens, finds, and configures the new drive.
