HP Officejet 4630, Deskjet 4640 Printers - First Time Printer Setup

To set up a printer for the first time, unpack the printer, connect the power cable, set your preferences, load paper into the input tray, and then install the ink cartridges.

Step 1: Remove the printer from the box

Remove the printer from the box and all tape, stickers, and packing materials from the printer.
The contents might vary by country/region. See the packaging for a list of items shipped in the box.
  1. Remove the printer from the box.
  2. Remove all tape and packing materials from the front and rear of the printer.
  3. Raise the scanner lid, and then remove the packing tape.

  4. Lower the scanner lid.
  5. Gently grasp the handles on either side of the printer, raise the ink cartridge access door until it locks into place, and then remove all tape and packing material from inside the printer.

    1. Open the ink cartridge access door
    2. Remove the tape and packing material from the cleanout area
    3. Remove the tape and packing material from the ink cartridge access area
  6. Close the ink cartridge access door.

  7. Open the paper tray door, pull it toward you to extend the paper tray, and then remove the packing tape.

  8. Push the paper tray forward until it clicks into place, and then close the paper tray door.
  9. Recycle the packing materials.

Step 2: Connect the power cord and set your preferences

Plug the printer into a power source, turn on the printer, and then set your preferences.
note:
Do not connect a USB cable at this time. The connection to the computer is established during software installation.
  1. Connect the power cord to the rear of the printer, and then plug it into a wall outlet.

  2. Turn on the printer.

  3. On the printer control panel, press the down arrow to select the language, and then press OK.

  4. Press the down arrow to select Yes, and then press OK.
    The Set Country/Region menu opens.
  5. Press the down arrow to select the country/region, and then press OK.
  6. Press the down arrow to select Yes, and then press OK.

Step 3: Load paper into the input tray

Load plain, U.S. letter, or A4 paper in the input tray.
  1. Open the input tray door, and then pull it toward you to extend the input tray.
  2. Gently pull out the input tray extender, and then lift the paper catch.

  3. Slide the paper width guides to their outermost position.

  4. Load a stack of U.S. letter, or A4 size paper into the paper tray with the short edge forward and the print side down.

  5. Push the stack into the tray until it stops.
  6. Slide in the paper width guides until they rest against the edges of the paper.

  7. Push the input tray forward until it clicks into place.
    note:
    Push the input tray forward all the way to avoid an error message.

Step 4: Install the ink cartridges

Install HP ink cartridges.
  1. Grasp the handles on either side of the ink cartridge access door, and then raise the ink cartridge access door until it locks into place.

  2. Wait until the carriage is idle and silent before you proceed.
  3. Remove one of the ink cartridges from its package. Be careful to only touch the black plastic on the ink cartridge.

  4. Remove the plastic tape from the ink cartridge.
      caution:
    Do not touch the copper-colored contacts or the ink nozzles. Do not replace the protective tape on the contacts. Handling these parts can result in clogs, ink failure, and bad electrical connections.

  5. Lift up the lid on the ink cartridge slot.

  6. Hold the ink cartridge by its sides with the nozzles toward the printer, then press the ink cartridge forward into the slot until it snaps into place.

  7. Close the lid on the ink cartridge slot to secure the ink cartridge into place.

  8. Repeat the previous steps to install the other ink cartridge.

    1. Insert the ink cartridge
    2. Close the lid
    3. The color ink cartridge is on the left, and the black ink cartridge is on the right
  9. Close the ink cartridge access door.
  10. Follow the instructions on the control panel to start the ink cartridge alignment.
    The printer aligns the ink cartridges and prints an alignment page.

Step 5: Install the printer software

Your HP printer hardware is now set up and you can install the printing software. Do not attempt to connect the printer to a computer until instructed to do so in the printing software.
