HP Deskjet F4100 All-in-One Printers - Blinking Lights

This document is for HP Deskjet F4135, F4140, F4150, F4172, F4175, F4180, F4185, F4188, F4190, and F4194 printers.

The lights on the front of the printer indicate the printer status. These lights can be on, off, or blinking (flashing), depending on the status of the printer. Blinking lights can indicate error conditions. They might also indicate that the printer is starting up, processing a print job, or charging batteries.

The following sections describe the most common issues related to the light patterns on your product. Find the issue related to the blinking lights pattern you are experiencing, and then follow the steps to resolve the issue.

note:
An E might also appear in the Number of Copies display. This is an additional indication that there is an issue with the product that needs to be resolved. The presence of an E, however, does not affect the meaning of the blinking lights, and can be disregarded for troubleshooting purposes.

All the lights are off

In this normal condition, the following blinking lights pattern displays on the control panel:

Power light: Off
Resume light: Off
Check Print Cartridge lights: Off
Paper Type lights: Off

The product is not on.

Solution one: Turn on the All-in-One

Press the Power button (

) to turn on the product.

If the product does not turn on, continue to the next solution.

Solution two: Make sure that the All-in-One is plugged in

Follow these steps to make sure that the power cord is connected to the rear of the product and plugged into an electrical outlet.

Check the rear of the product to make sure that the cord from the power supply is inserted securely into the power connection.
Check the power supply to make sure that the power cord is securely plugged into it.
Check the electrical outlet to make sure that the power cord is securely plugged into it.

Press the Power button () to turn on the product.
If the product does not turn on, follow the same steps and try a different wall outlet.

If these steps resolved the issue, you do not need to continue troubleshooting.
If the issue persists, continue to the next solution.

Solution three: Press the Power button more slowly

The product might not respond if you press the Power button (

) too quickly.

Press the Power button (

) once slowly to turn on the product.

If these steps resolved the issue, you do not need to continue troubleshooting.
If the issue persists, continue to the next solution.

Solution four: Reset the power module, and then test the power

Follow these steps to first reset the power module on the power cord, and then test the power on the product.

Step one: Reset the power module

The power module has a safety feature that protects the product during a power surge. If you experienced a recent power surge, you might need to reset the power module. Use the following steps to reset the power module.

Disconnect the power supply from the rear of the product.

Unplug the power cord from the electrical outlet, power strip, or surge protector.
If the product uses a power module with a detachable power cord, disconnect the cord from the power module.
Wait 15 seconds.
Reconnect the power cord to the power module.
Plug the power cord directly into a wall outlet. Do not use a power strip or surge protector.
Check to see if the power module has an LED.
- If the power module does not have an LED, continue to the next step.
- If the power module has an LED, check to see if the LED lights up.
  - If the LED does not light up, contact HP to replace the power module. To buy a compatible power module, right-click the following link, How to Buy HP, and then click Open in New Window.
  - If the LED lights up, continue to the next step.

Step two: Test the power on the All-in-One

Follow these steps to test the power on the product.

Reconnect the power supply to the rear of the product.

Press and then quickly release the Power button (

) to start a power on/off cycle. Do not hold the button down.

If you press and hold the Power button too long, the product might turn on and then turn off without restarting. If this happens, press and quickly release the Power button (

) again.

If these steps resolved the issue, you do not need to continue troubleshooting.
If the issue persists, continue to the next solution.

Solution five: Test the power with a compatible power cord from a different All-in-One

If you have another available power cord that is compatible with the product, use the alternate cord to test the power.

Press the Power button () to turn off the product.
Disconnect the power cord from the rear of the product.

Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.
Connect the alternate power cord to the rear of the product.
Plug the alternate power cord into the wall outlet.
Press the Power button () to turn on the product.

If the product turns on with the alternate power cord, the original power cord caused the issue. Contact HP to replace the power cord. Right-click the following link, How to Buy HP, to buy a compatible power cord.
If the product does not turn on with the alternate power cord, continue to the next solution.

Solution six: Service the All-in-One

If you have completed all the steps and are still experiencing a problem, continue to the Service the All-in-One section at the end of this document.

The Power light and one of the Paper Type lights are on

In this normal condition, the following blinking lights pattern displays on the control panel:

Power light: On
Resume light: Off
Check Print Cartridge lights: Off
Paper Type lights: One of the lights is on

The product is on and ready to print, copy, or scan.

Press the appropriate button(s) on the product control panel to perform the intended task.

If the product operates normally, allow the product to complete the job.
If after trying the task, a blinking light or combination of blinking lights displays on the product control panel, find the pattern you are experiencing in this document, and then follow the steps to resolve the issue.

The Power light blinks

In this normal condition, the following blinking lights pattern displays on the control panel:

Power light: Blinking
Resume light: Off
Check Print Cartridge lights: Off
Paper Type lights: One of the lights is on

The product is busy copying, scanning, printing, or performing a maintenance job, such as alignment.

Solution one: Wait for the All-in-One to complete the job

Wait for the product to finish processing a copy, scan, print, or maintenance job.

If the product completes the job normally, there is no need to continue troubleshooting.
If the product is unresponsive for more than 60 seconds, continue to the next solution.

Solution two: Cancel and then retry the task

Follow these steps to cancel and then retry the current task.

Press the Cancel button () on the control panel, and then press the appropriate button(s) on the control panel again to perform the intended task.
If you cannot cancel the task, press and hold the Power button () for three seconds to turn off the product.
- If the product successfully turns off, press the Power button () to turn on the product, and then press the appropriate button(s) on the control panel again to perform the intended task.
- If the product does not turn off, continue to the next solution.

Solution three: Reset the All-in-One

Follow these steps to reset the product.

Step one: Perform a power reset

With the product turned on, disconnect the USB cable from the rear of the product.
Disconnect the power cord from the rear of the product.
Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.
Wait 30 seconds.
Plug the power cord back into the wall outlet.
Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the product.
If the product does not turn on by itself, press the Power button () to turn it on.
Reconnect the USB cable to the rear of the product.

Step two: Print a self-test report

Load plain white paper into the paper tray.
Press and hold the Cancel button (), and then press the Start Color Copy button ().

The product prints a self-test report.

If these steps resolved the issue, you do not need to continue troubleshooting.
If the issue persists, continue to the next solution.

Solution four: Service the All-in-One

If you have completed all the steps and are still experiencing a problem, continue to the Service the All-in-One section at the end of this document.

The Power light blinks quickly for 3 seconds, and then remains on

In this normal condition, the following blinking lights pattern displays on the control panel:

Power light: Blinks quickly for 3 seconds, and then remains on
Resume light: Off
Check Print Cartridge lights: Off
Paper Type lights: One of the lights is on

A button on the control panel was pressed while the product was busy copying, scanning, printing, or performing a maintenance job, such as alignment.

Solution one: Wait for the All-in-One to complete the job

Allow the product to complete the current job.

If the product completes the job normally, there is no need to continue troubleshooting.
If the product is unresponsive for more than 60 seconds, continue to the next solution.

Solution two: Cancel and then retry the task

Follow these steps to cancel and then retry the current task.

Press the Cancel button () on the control panel, and then press the appropriate button(s) on the control panel again to perform the intended task.
If you cannot cancel the task, press and hold the Power button () for three seconds to turn off the product.
- If the product successfully turns off, press the Power button () to turn on the product, and then press the appropriate button(s) on the control panel again to perform the intended task.
- If the product does not turn off, continue to the next solution.

Solution three: Reset the All-in-One

Follow these steps to reset the product.

Step one: Perform a power reset

With the product turned on, disconnect the USB cable from the rear of the product.
Disconnect the power cord from the rear of the product.
Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.
Wait 30 seconds.
Plug the power cord back into the wall outlet.
Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the product.
If the product does not turn on by itself, press the Power button () to turn it on.
Reconnect the USB cable to the rear of the product.

Step two: Print a self-test report

Load plain white paper into the paper tray.
Press and hold the Cancel button (), and then press the Start Color Copy button ().

The product prints a self-test report.

If these steps resolved the issue, you do not need to continue troubleshooting.
If the issue persists, continue to the next solution.

Solution four: Service the All-in-One

If you have completed all the steps and are still experiencing a problem, continue to the Service the All-in-One section at the end of this document.

The Power light blinks for 20 seconds, and then remains on

In this error condition, the following blinking lights pattern displays on the control panel:

Power light: Blinks for 20 seconds, and then remains on
Resume light: Off
Check Print Cartridge lights: Off
Paper Type lights: One of the lights is on

The product is trying to process a task and there is a communication problem with the computer.

Solution one: Make sure that your computer is turned on

Follow these steps to make sure that your computer is turned on.

If the computer is turned off, press the power button on the computer to turn it on.
Try the intended task again.

If these steps resolved the issue, you do not need to continue troubleshooting.
If the issue persists, continue to the next solution.

Solution two: Check the connection between the All-in-One and the computer

Follow these steps to make sure that the USB cable is securely connected to the product and the computer.

Step one: Disconnect and then reconnect the USB cable

Disconnect the USB cable from the rear of the product.

caution:
Do not disconnect the power cord during this step.

Wait five seconds.
Securely reconnect the USB cable to the rear of the computer.
Securely reconnect the USB cable to the rear of the product.

note:
Make sure that the USB cable is connected correctly. The icon on the USB cable () generally faces up when the cable is correctly connected.

Step two: Test the connection

Press the appropriate button(s) on the product control panel again to perform the intended task.

If the product operates normally, there is no need to continue troubleshooting.
If the lights on the control panel still blink, continue to the next step.

Step three: Replace the USB cable

Securely connect an alternate USB cable to the product.
Securely connect the alternate USB cable to the computer.

note:
HP supports USB cables less than 3 meters (9 feet 10 inches) in length.
Try the intended task again.

If these steps resolved the issue, you do not need to continue troubleshooting.
If the issue persists, continue to the next solution.

Solution three: Install the HP software

You must download and then install the HP product software in order for your computer to detect the product.

Step one: Install the HP software

Turn on the printer.
Disconnect the USB cable from the printer, if necessary. The software installation prompts you to connect the cable if needed.
Go to HP Customer Support - Software and Driver Downloads.
If a Let's identify your product to get started page displays, click Printer, type your printer model number, and then click Submit.
If you need to change the operating system, click Change, select your version, and then click Change.
Under the Driver heading, click Download for the full software package, or click Basic Drivers for other driver options.

Step two: Print a self-test report

Load plain white paper into the paper tray.
Press and hold the Cancel button (), and then press the Start Color Copy button ().

The product prints a self-test report.

If these steps resolved the issue, you do not need to continue troubleshooting.
If the issue persists, continue to the next solution.

Solution four: Service the All-in-One

If you have completed all the steps and are still experiencing a problem, continue to the Service the All-in-One section at the end of this document.

The Resume light blinks

In this error condition, the following blinking lights pattern displays on the control panel:

Power light: On
Resume light: Blinking
Check Print Cartridge lights: Off
Paper Type lights: One of the lights is on

The paper tray is closed, or a problem exists with the paper, carriage, or paper feed rollers.

Solution one: Open the paper tray

Follow these steps to open the paper tray.

Pull on the top of the closed tray to open it, and then gently lower the tray until it is horizontal and stops.
Fold out the tray extender, and then flip up the paper stop at the end.

note:
For best results when loading legal-size paper, fold in the paper tray extender before loading the paper to avoid a paper jam.
Press the Resume button () to resume the task.

If these steps resolved the issue, you do not need to continue troubleshooting.
If the issue persists, continue to the next solution.

Solution two: Load paper

Follow these steps to load letter or A4 paper into the product.

Lower the paper tray, and then fold out the tray extender toward you to catch paper as it exits the device.

note:
For best results when loading legal-size paper, fold in the paper tray extender before loading the paper to avoid a paper jam.

Slide the paper width guide to its outermost position

Tap the stack of paper on a flat surface to align the edges.
Make sure that the paper is free of rips, dust, wrinkles, and curled or bent edges, and that all the paper in the stack is the same size and type.
Insert the paper into the paper tray print side down until it stops. To avoid bending the paper, make sure that you do not push the paper in too far, or push too hard. If you are using letterhead, insert the top of the page first.

Do not use too much paper. Make sure that the stack of paper is no higher than the top of the paper width guide.

note:
Forcing the paper too far into the product might cause multiple sheets of paper to be fed through the print mechanism, or cause a paper jam.

Press the Resume button () to continue the task.

If these steps resolved the issue, you do not need to continue troubleshooting.
If the issue persists, continue to the next solution.

Solution three: Match the paper settings to the print job

Use one of the following methods to change the paper size settings in the print driver to match the print job. Create a custom paper size only if the correct paper size is not an option.

Method one: Select an existing paper size

In the program you are using on your computer, click File, and then click Print. The Print window opens.
In the Name: drop-down list, select the correct product, if it is not already selected.
Click Properties or Preferences in the upper-right corner of the Print window. The Properties or Printing Preferences window opens.

note:
The name of the button or window depends on the software you are using.
Click the Features tab.
From the Size: drop-down list, click More to access the paper size options. The Size is: window opens.
In the Size is: list, scroll down to the appropriate paper size category, and then select the paper size that matches the paper loaded in the product.
Click OK to accept the settings.
Try the intended task again.

Method two: Create a custom paper size

In the program you are using on your computer, click File, and then click Print. The Print window opens.
In the Name: drop-down list, select the correct product, if it is not already selected.
Click Properties or Preferences in the upper-right corner of the Print window. The Properties or Printing Preferences window opens.

note:
The name of the button or window depends on the software you are using.
Click the Features tab.
From the Size: drop-down list, click Custom. The Custom Paper Size window opens.
In the Name box, type a name for the paper size you are using. For example, if you are printing on 101.6 x 203.2 mm (4 x 8 inch) envelopes, type 4x8 envelopes.

note:
You must type a custom size name in the Name box. If you do not, the Save button is unavailable when you try to save the setting.
In the Paper Size area, type the measurement in the Width and Length boxes. For example, if you are printing on 101.6 x 203.2 mm (4 x 8 inch) envelopes, type 4 in the Width box, and then type 8 in the Length box.
In the Units area, select the appropriate unit of measure, and then click Save.

note:
If Save is unavailable, make sure that there is a name for the setting in the Name box.
Click OK to accept the settings. The Custom Paper Size window closes.
From the Size: drop-down list on the Features tab, click More.
The Size is: window opens.
In the Size is: list, scroll down to Custom, and then select the custom paper size you created.
Click OK to accept the settings.
Press the Resume button () to clear the error, and then try the task again.

If these steps resolved the issue, you do not need to continue troubleshooting.
If the issue persists, continue to the next solution.

Solution four: Clear any jammed paper

Follow these steps to clear a paper jam from the product.

note:

Experiencing frequent or recurring paper jams?

The following recommendations can help prevent recurring paper jams in your HP product.

Before loading paper in the tray, hold the stack of paper, and then tap the bottom edge on a flat surface so that the stack is even on all sides.
Make sure that the length and width adjusters on the tray are correctly positioned, and then push the stack of paper forward until it stops in the tray.

caution:
Do not force the paper to move too far forward in the tray.
Do not overload the tray with paper.
Only add paper to the tray when the product is not printing.
Make sure the HP product supports the paper type. See the documentation that came with the HP product for more information.
Do not print on paper with paper clips or staples attached.
Do not use paper that is bent, torn, dusty, damp, wrinkled, curled, or paper that does not lie flat.
Use only one type of paper at a time. Do not mix different types, weights, or sizes of paper.
Do not use paper that is too thin, too thick, or too glossy for the product.

Paper jam causes

The following factors can cause paper jams:

Paper loaded incorrectly in the paper tray.
Damaged or dirty paper rollers.
Torn, wrinkled, or damp paper loaded in the paper tray.
The rear access door might not be closed or is not locked into place.
Paper was added to a stack already in the tray while the HP product was printing.
The tray contains more than one type of paper.
The paper is jammed inside the HP product where you cannot see it.
An obstruction is blocking the paper path.
Torn pieces of paper from a previous jam are stuck in the product.
The tray is too full.
If printing on an envelope, the edges of the envelope are bent.

Step one: Remove any loose paper

Remove any loose sheets of paper from the input tray and the output tray.

caution:
Do not remove jammed paper at this stage. Trying to clear jammed paper from the front of the product can damage the print mechanism.

Step two: Clear the paper jam from the rear of the All-in-One

caution:
Always try to pull jammed paper from the rear of the product or the paper tray. Pulling paper from inside the front cover can cause mechanical damage to the product.

Press the Power button () to turn off the product.
Disconnect the USB cable from the rear of the product.
Disconnect the power cord from the rear of the product.

Remove the rear access door. Press in the tab on the left side of the door, and then pull the door away from the product to remove it.

Gently remove any jammed paper or bits of torn paper from the rollers inside the product. Use both hands to pull any whole sheets of paper to avoid tearing them.

caution:
Use a flashlight to thoroughly check the rollers and wheels for torn pieces of paper that might remain inside the product. If any torn pieces of paper remain inside the product, more jams are likely to occur.

Reattach the rear access door. Gently push the door forward until it snaps into place.

Step three: Clear the paper jam from the front of the All-in-One

If you cannot remove the paper jam from the rear of the product, follow these steps to remove the paper jam from the front.

Open the cartridge access door.

Carefully remove any jammed paper from the front of the product.

note:
Remove paper from the front of the product as carefully as possible. If any torn pieces of paper remain inside the product, more paper jams are likely to occur, and this could damage the print mechanism.
Close the cartridge access door.

Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the product.
Press the Power button () to turn on the product.

Step four: Print a self-test report

Load plain white paper into the paper tray.
Press and hold the Cancel button (), and then press the Start Color Copy button ().

The product prints a self-test report.

If these steps resolved the issue, you do not need to continue troubleshooting.
If the issue persists, continue to the next solution.

Solution five: Check for carriage obstructions

Follow these steps to make sure that the carriage can move freely.

Step one: Make sure that the carriage can move freely

Press the Power button () to turn on the product.
Open the cartridge access door.

Without turning off the product, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the product.

caution:
You must disconnect the power cord to move parts by hand without the risk of an electrical shock.
Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.
Look inside the product to see where the carriage is stuck, and then check for any torn paper or objects that might be restricting the carriage.

note:
You might need a flashlight to illuminate areas for proper viewing.
Reach inside the product through the front access door, and then manually move the carriage.
- If the carriage is stuck on the right side of the product, move the carriage to the left side of the product.
- If the carriage is stuck on the left side of the product, move the carriage to the right side of the product.
- If the carriage is stuck in the middle of the product, move the carriage to the right side of the product.
Remove any loose paper or obstructions found.
Make sure that the carriage can move freely across the width of the product by gently pushing the carriage to the left and then to the right.
Close the cartridge access door.

Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the product.
Plug the power cord back into the wall outlet.
Press the Power button () to turn on the product.
Check the control panel to make sure that the lights are no longer blinking.

Step two: Print a self-test report

Load plain white paper into the paper tray.
Press and hold the Cancel button (), and then press the Start Color Copy button ().

The product prints a self-test report.

If these steps resolved the issue, you do not need to continue troubleshooting.
If the issue persists, continue to the next solution.

Solution six: Clean the paper feed rollers

Dust, paper fiber, and other debris might accumulate on the paper feed rollers and cause paper jams and paper feed issues. Follow these steps to clean the paper feed rollers.

Step one: Clean the paper feed rollers

Gather the following materials:
- A clean, lint-free cloth, or any cloth that will not come apart or leave fibers
- Distilled, filtered, or bottled water (tap water might damage the product)
Press the Power button () to turn off the product.
Disconnect the power cord from the rear of the product.
Remove the rear access door. Press in the tab on the left side of the door, and then pull the door away from the product to remove it.

Lightly dampen a clean, lint-free cloth with bottled or distilled water, and then squeeze any excess liquid from the cloth.
Press the cloth against the paper feed rollers, and then rotate them upwards with your fingers. Apply a moderate amount of pressure to remove any dust or dirt buildup.

Allow the rollers to dry for 10 or 15 minutes.
Check the paper feed rollers on the rear access door to make sure that they are clean, free of paper bits, and rotate freely.

Reattach the rear access door. Gently push the door forward until it snaps into place.

Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the product.
If the product does not turn on automatically, press the Power button () to turn it on.

Step two: Print a self-test report

Load plain white paper into the paper tray.
Press and hold the Cancel button (), and then press the Start Color Copy button ().

The product prints a self-test report.

If these steps resolved the issue, you do not need to continue troubleshooting.
If the issue persists, continue to the next solution.

Solution seven: Reset the All-in-One

Follow these steps to reset the product.

Step one: Perform a power reset

With the product turned on, disconnect the USB cable from the rear of the product.
Disconnect the power cord from the rear of the product.
Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.
Wait 30 seconds.
Plug the power cord back into the wall outlet.

Reconnect the USB cable to the rear of the product.

If the issue persists, continue to the next solution.

Solution eight: Service the All-in-One

If you have completed all the steps and are still experiencing a problem, continue to the Service the All-in-One section at the end of this document.

One or both of the Check Print Cartridge lights blink

In this error condition, the following blinking lights pattern displays on the control panel:

Power light: On
Resume light: Off
Check Print Cartridge lights: One or both lights are blinking
Paper Type lights: One of the lights is on

The cartridge access door is open, or a problem exists with the cartridges.

Solution one: Close the cartridge access door

Make sure that the cartridge access door is completely closed.

You might have to press the Resume button (

) again to resume the task.

If these steps resolved the issue, you do not need to continue troubleshooting.
If the issue persists, continue to the next solution.

Solution two: Install the cartridges

Follow these steps to install the cartridges in the product. If you have already installed the cartridges, proceed to the next solution to check cartridge compatibility.

Press the Power button () to turn on the product.
Load plain white paper in the paper tray.

If your cartridges are not compatible, replace them with compatible HP cartridges, and then follow the instructions for installing new cartridges in this document.

Without turning off the product, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the product.

caution:
You must disconnect the power cord to move parts by hand without the risk of an electrical shock.
Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.
Look inside the product to see where the carriage is stuck, and then check for any torn paper or objects that might be restricting the carriage.

note:
You might need a flashlight to illuminate areas for proper viewing.
Reach inside the product through the cartridge access door, and then manually move the carriage.
- If the carriage is stuck on the right side of the product, move the carriage to the left side of the product.
- If the carriage is stuck on the left side of the product, move the carriage to the right side of the product.
- If the carriage is stuck in the middle of the product, move the carriage to the right side of the product.
Remove any loose paper or obstructions found.
Make sure that the carriage can move freely across the width of the product by gently pushing the carriage to the left and then to the right.
Close the cartridge access door.

Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the product.
Plug the power cord back into the wall outlet.
Press the Power button () to turn on the product.
Check the control panel to make sure that the lights are no longer blinking.

Step two: Print a self-test report

Load plain white paper into the paper tray.
Press and hold the Cancel button (), and then press the Start Color Copy button ().

The product prints a self-test report.

If the issue persists, continue to the next solution.

Solution six: Clean the cartridges and inside the All-in-One

Follow these steps to clean the electrical contacts on the cartridges and inside the product.

Gather the following materials:
- Dry foam rubber swabs, a lint-free cloth, or any soft material that will not come apart or leave fibers (coffee filters work well)
- Distilled, filtered, or bottled water (tap water might contain contaminants that can damage the cartridges)
  
  caution:
  Do not use platen cleaners or alcohol to clean the cartridge contacts. These can damage the cartridge or the product.
Press the Power button () to turn on the product.
Open the cartridge access door. The carriage might move to the center of the product. Wait until the carriage is idle and silent before continuing.

Disconnect the power cord from the rear of the product.
Press lightly on the top of the cartridge that you are replacing to release it from its slot. Then slide the cartridge out of the carriage.

Do not remove both cartridges at the same time. Remove and clean each cartridge one at a time. Do not leave a cartridge outside the product for more than 30 minutes.
Hold the cartridge by its sides.
Dip a clean foam rubber swab or lint-free cloth into distilled water, and then squeeze any excess water from it.
Clean the copper-colored electrical contacts.

Do not clean the ink nozzles
Allow the contacts to dry for about 10 minutes.
Use a second moistened foam rubber swab or lint-free cloth to clean the gold-colored electrical contacts in the carriage, inside the product.

Wait about 10 minutes to allow the electrical contacts to dry, or use a new swab or dry, clean cloth to dry them.
To reinsert the cartridge, hold it by its sides, and then slide it forward into its slot at a slightly upward angle.

Repeat these steps to clean the contacts on the other cartridge and in the other side of the carriage.

Solution seven: Replace a defective cartridge

One or both of the cartridges might be defective. Before performing these steps, make sure that the replacement cartridge is compatible with your product. Follow these steps to determine which cartridge is defective, and then remove and replace that cartridge.

Purchase replacement cartridges and other supplies from the HP Store or local retailers.

Press the Power button () to turn on the product.
Open the cartridge access door. The carriage might move to the center of the product. Wait until the carriage is idle and silent before continuing.

Workaround: Print in ink-backup mode (single-cartridge mode)

You can print with only one cartridge installed (ink-backup mode, also called single-cartridge mode). The ink-backup mode is initiated when a cartridge is removed from the carriage. During ink-backup mode, the product can only print jobs from the computer. You cannot initiate a print job from the control panel (such as copying or scanning an original).

The product prints more slowly in this mode, and printouts might be of lesser quality. If you print with only the black cartridge, no color will print. If you print with only the color cartridge, no black ink will print.

note:
When the product operates in ink-backup mode, a message is displayed on the computer screen. If the message is displayed and two cartridges are installed in the product, make sure that the protective piece of plastic tape has been removed from each cartridge. When plastic tape covers the cartridge electrical contacts, the product cannot detect an installed cartridge.

Press the Power button () to turn on the product.
Open the cartridge access door. The carriage might move to the center of the product. Wait until the carriage is idle and silent before continuing.

Lightly press down on the cartridge that you want to remove to release it from its slot.

You might see a recurring message on your computer that tells you that the product is in single-cartridge mode. The Attention light also continuously blinks in ink-backup mode. These symptoms recur until you install two working cartridges.

If the front panel overlay, or bezel, is incorrectly installed, the product may indicate a false carriage stall error condition. If the product has not been set up before, follow these steps to ensure correct installation of the front panel overlay.

If the front panel overlay is already installed, and your printer has been working for some time, do not attempt to reinstall the overlay. Press firmly on the overlay to ensure proper installation of the overlay adhesive or pins.

If you have already installed the front panel overlay, proceed to the next solution.

Disconnect the power cord from the rear of the product.
Locate the front panel overlay, and then peel off the paper backing to expose the adhesive as shown in the graphic below.

Step one: Download and install the firmware software update

Open HP Update:
- Windows XP: Click Start, click All Programs, click HP, and then click HP Update.
- Windows Vista: Click the Windows icon (), click All Programs, click HP, and then click HP Update.
- Windows 7: Click the Windows icon (), click All Programs, click HP, and then click HP Update.
The HP Update window opens, and the 'Checking for new updates' message displays in the window.
- If any updates display in the HP Update window, continue with the next step.
- If no updates display in the HP Update window, you have the most current updates for your product. Click Cancel, and then skip to the next solution.
Select only the check box next to Critical Update to Support Printer Updates.
Click to clear the check boxes next to any other updates.
Click Next. The HP firmware update software downloads to your computer.
When the download completes, click Finish in the HP Update window.

Step two: Print a self-test report

Load plain white paper into the paper tray.
Press and hold the Cancel button (), and then press the Start Color Copy button ().

The product prints a self-test report.

Open HP Update:
- Windows XP: Click Start, click All Programs, click HP, and then click HP Update.
- Windows Vista: Click the Windows icon (), click All Programs, click HP, and then click HP Update.
- Windows 7: Click the Windows icon (), click All Programs, click HP, and then click HP Update.
The HP Update window opens, and the 'Checking for new updates' message displays in the window.
- If any updates display in the HP Update window, continue with the next step.
- If no updates display in the HP Update window, you have the most current updates for your product. Click Cancel, and then skip to the next solution.
When the 'New software is available' message displays in the HP Update window, select only the check box next to Critical Update to Prevent Blinking LED Failures.
Click to clear the check boxes next to any other updates.
Click Next. The critical update downloads to your computer, and then the HP Device Update Wizard window opens.
Click Next to start the critical update installation. The Important information window opens.
Follow the on-screen instructions in the Important information window, and then click Update to install the critical update.

note:
The critical update might take as long as 10 minutes to install on your computer. The update process might also restart your product automatically.
When the installation completes, click OK to close the HP Device Update Wizard window.
