Blinking Lights on the HP Deskjet F300 All-in-One Printer Series

Introduction

The lights on the front of the product indicate the status. These lights can be on, off, or blinking (flashing), depending on the status of the product. The Power light, Paper light, Print Cartridge light, Plain Paper Type, and Photo Paper Type lights can all blink in distinct patterns to indicate the status or error conditions.

Other lights, such as those for the Paper Type and Resize to Fit buttons, indicate a selected user preference only and do not blink.

This document describes the light patterns on your product as blinking or flashing lights. In this document, "flashing" means the same as "blinking."

Blinking lights

The following sections describe the combinations of blinking lights that display on the product control panel. Find the blinking lights pattern you are experiencing, and then follow the steps to resolve the issue.

note:
There might be more than one solution for some blinking lights patterns. After you find the pattern that matches your blinking lights pattern, try each solution to resolve the issue.

Issue: All the lights are off

In this error condition, the following blinking lights pattern displays on the control panel:

Power light: Off
Paper light: Off
Print Cartridge light: Off
Plain Paper Type light: Off
Photo Paper Type light: Off

Cause

The product does not turn on.

Solutions

Important: You must follow these solutions in the order presented to resolve the issue.

Solution one: Make sure that the product is plugged in

Follow these steps to make sure that the power cord is connected to the rear of the product and plugged into an electrical outlet.

Check the rear of the product to make sure that the cord from the power supply is inserted securely into the power connection.
Check the power supply to make sure that the power cord is securely plugged into it.
Check the electrical outlet to make sure that the power cord is securely plugged into it.

Press the Power button () to turn on the product.

If these steps resolved the issue, you do not need to continue troubleshooting.
If the issue persists, continue to the next solution.

Solution two: Press the Power button more slowly

The product might not respond if you press the Power button (

) too quickly.

Press the Power button () slowly to turn on the product.
Check the control panel to see if the Power light ( is blinking.

If these steps resolved the issue, you do not need to continue troubleshooting.
If the issue persists, continue to the next solution.

Solution three: Plug the product directly into a wall outlet

A power strip or surge suppressor might not allow enough voltage to reach the product. Follow these steps to connect the power cord to a wall outlet.

Disconnect the power cord from the rear of the product.
Unplug the power cord from any power strips or surge suppressors.
Plug the power cord directly into a grounded wall outlet.
Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the product.
Press the Power button () to turn on the product.

If these steps resolved the issue, you do not need to continue troubleshooting.
If the issue persists, continue to the next solution.

Solution four: Service the printer

If you have completed all the steps and are still experiencing a problem, continue to the Service the All-in-One section at the end of this document.

Issue: The Power light is blinking

In this normal operating condition, the following blinking lights pattern displays on the control panel:

Power light: Blinking
Paper light: Off
Print Cartridge light: Off
Plain Paper Type light: Off
Photo Paper Type light: Off

Cause

The product is processing a print, scan, copy, or maintenance task (such as an alignment).

Solutions

Important: You must follow these solutions in the order presented to resolve the issue.

Solution one: Allow the task to finish

Wait for the product to finish the task.

If the product does not finish the task, press and hold the Power button () for three seconds to turn off the product.
If the product does not turn off, continue to the next solution.

Solution two: Perform a power reset

Disconnect the power cord from the rear of the product.
Wait 15 seconds.
Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the product.
Press the Power button () to turn on the product.
Try the task again.

If these steps resolved the issue, you do not need to continue troubleshooting.
If the issue persists, continue to the next solution.

Solution three: Service the printer

Issue: Power light blinks fast for 3 seconds, and then turns on

In this error condition, the following control panel blinking lights pattern displays:

Power light: Blinks fast for 3 seconds
Paper light: Off
Print Cartridge light: Off
Plain Paper Type light: Off
Photo Paper Type light: Off

Cause

The product is busy doing another task.

Solutions

Important: You must follow these solutions in the order presented to resolve the issue.

Solution one: Allow the task to finish

Wait for the product to complete the current task before initiating another.

If the product does not finish the task, press and hold the Power button () for three seconds to turn off the product.
If the product does not turn off, continue to the next solution.

Solution two: Reset the product

Follow these steps to reset the printer.

Step one: Perform a power reset

Press the Power button () to turn on the product.
With the product turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the product.
Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.
Wait at least 15 seconds.
Plug the power cord back into the wall outlet.
Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the product.
If the product does not turn on by itself, press the Power button () to turn it on.

Step two: Print a self-test report

Press and hold the Cancel button (), and then press the Start Copy Color button ().
Release both buttons at the same time. The self-test report prints.

If these steps resolved the issue, and the test page prints, there is no need to continue troubleshooting.
If the issue persists, continue with the next solution.
If the test page does not print, continue with the next solution.

Solution three: Service the printer

If you have completed all the steps and are still experiencing a problem, continue to the Service the All-in-One section at the end of this document.

Issue: The Power light blinks fast for 20 seconds

In this error condition, the following control panel blinking lights pattern displays:

Power light: Blinks fast for 20 seconds, and then turns on
Paper light: Off
Print Cartridge light: Off
Plain Paper Type light: Off
Photo Paper Type light: Off

Cause

You pressed the Scan button (), and the computer did not respond.

Solutions

Important: You must follow these solutions in the order presented to resolve the issue.

Solution one: Make sure that the computer is turned on

Follow these steps to make sure that the computer is turned on.

Step one: Turn on the computer

Press the power button on the computer.
Wait for the computer to start up.
Try the task again.

If these steps resolved the issue, there is no need to continue troubleshooting.
If the issue persists, see the next step.

Step two: Make sure that the computer is plugged in

Check the rear of the computer to make sure that the cord from the power supply is inserted securely into the power input connection.
Check the surge protector, power strip, or electrical outlet to make sure that the computer power cord is securely plugged into it.
If you use a surge protector or power strip, check the electrical outlet to make sure that the surge protector or power strip is securely plugged into the outlet.
Press the Power button on the computer to turn on the computer.
Try the task again.

If these steps resolved the issue, there is no need to continue troubleshooting.

Step three: Plug the computer directly into a wall outlet

A surge suppressor or power strip might not allow enough voltage to reach the computer. If your computer plugs into a surge suppressor or power strip, follow these steps to connect the computer power cord directly to a wall outlet.

Unplug the computer power cord from any power strips or surge suppressors.
Plug the computer power cord directly into a grounded wall outlet.
Try the task again.

If these steps resolved the issue, you do not need to continue troubleshooting.
If the issue persists, continue to the next solution.

Solution two: Check the connections

Follow these steps in the order given to check the connection between the computer and the product.

If the product is not turned on, press the Power button () to turn it on.
Check to make sure that the USB cable is securely plugged into the product.
Check to make sure that the USB cable is securely plugged into your computer.
Try the task again.

If these steps resolved the issue, you do not need to continue troubleshooting.

Solution three: Make sure that the HP software has been installed

Choose your operating system, and then follow the steps given to properly install the product software on the computer.

Windows XP

Follow these steps to install the product software on your computer.

Step one: Decide whether to install with the product CD or download the software from the HP website

Don’t worry if you don’t have the product CD! You can download the most current software available for your product from the HP Web site at no cost. The following information might help you decide which installation method to use:

	CD	Download
For a new product:	CD installation is a quick and easy method.	If you do not have a CD, you can download the software you need.
For an older product:	CD installation might not work if you are installing the product on a computer running a newer operating system that released AFTER the HP product released.	Downloading the software provides the best results for your older product. Even though it takes more time than using the CD, downloading the latest software can help you avoid installation issues. Downloading is the recommended method if your computer operating system released after the HP product released.
About the software:	The software on the CD is current to the date of the product release.	The software that you can download from the HP Web site is the most current software available for your product. HP often updates software and drivers AFTER the product and CD release to the market.

Step two: Install the software

Select your preferred method, and then follow the steps to install the product software on your computer.

Turn on the printer.
Disconnect the USB cable from the printer, if necessary. The software installation prompts you to connect the cable if needed.
Go to HP Customer Support - Software and Driver Downloads.
If a Let's identify your product to get started page displays, click Printer, type your printer model number, and then click Submit.
If you need to change the operating system, click Change, select your version, and then click Change.
Under the Driver heading, click Download for the full software package, or click Basic Drivers for other driver options.

Method two: Install the software with the product CD

During the installation, you choose what type of installation you want. The installation type names vary depending on your product. The following information might help you decide which installation type to use.

Recommended type	Custom type
Recommended, Full, or Easy	Custom, Express, or Advanced
For full use of all your features: This installation provides full functionality. HP also includes valuable software to help you get the most out of your product. This type of installation is designed to work for most users.	A custom type of installation might be available for your product. This installation allows you to install the minimum software required or the preferred software. Use this type of installation only if you have one of the following reasons: The computer is low on hard disk space. You attempted a recommended type of installation and received errors. (If errors occur during the recommended installation, fix them before trying a custom installation.)

The Recommended type of installation allows you to take advantage of all your product features.

Follow these steps to install the software with the CD.

If the product is not turned on already, press the Power button () to turn it on.
Insert the CD into the CD drive of the computer, and then wait a few seconds for the software installer to start.

If the installer does not start automatically, click Start, click My Computer, and then double-click the CD drive.
Follow the on-screen instructions to install the software.

Important: The installer might ask if you want to check online for the latest installation updates for your product. For the best installation results, HP recommends that you click “Yes” to let the installer check for updates and download them for you.

Windows Vista

Follow these steps to install the product software on your computer.

If the installer does not start automatically, click the Windows icon (), click Computer, and then double-click the CD drive.

If the User Account Control screen opens, click Allow to continue.
Follow the on-screen instructions to install the software.

Windows 7

Follow these steps to install the product software on your computer.

For example, Windows 7 released in 2009. If HP manufactured your product prior to that year, the CD that came with the product might not work correctly on a computer running Windows 7.	Downloading the software provides the best results for your older product. Even though it takes more time than using the CD, downloading the latest software can help you avoid installation issues. Downloading is the recommended method if your computer operating system released after the HP product released.
About the software:	The software on the CD is current to the date of the product release.	The software you can download from the HP Web site is most current software available for your product. HP often updates software and drivers AFTER the product and CD release to the market.

Step two: Install the software

Make sure the product and the computer are turned on.
Connect the USB cable to the rear port of the HP product and to any USB port on the computer.
Exit any open programs on the computer.

Step two: Decide whether to install with the CD or download the software from the HP website

For a new product:	CD installation is a quick and easy method.	If you do not have a CD, you can download the software you need.
For an older product:	CD installation might not work if you are installing the product on a computer running a newer operating system that released AFTER the HP product released. Method two: Install the software with the product CD

Insert the Macintosh product CD into the CD drive of the computer.
Double-click the HP software disc icon that displays under the Macintosh HD icon.
Double-click the HP Installer icon.

The HP Installer program opens.
When prompted, select your HP product, and then click OK.
Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the installation.

Mac OS X v10.6

Follow these steps to install the product software on your computer.

Step one: Prepare for the installation

Make sure the product and the computer are turned on.
Connect the USB cable to the rear port of the HP product and to any USB port on the computer.
Exit any open programs on the computer.

Step two: Download and install the software

Turn on the printer.
Disconnect the USB cable from the printer, if necessary. The software installation prompts you to connect the cable if needed.

Issue: The Paper light is blinking

In this error condition, the following blinking lights pattern displays on the control panel:

Power light: On
Paper light: Blinking
Print Cartridge light: Off
Plain Paper Type light: Off
Photo Paper Type light: Off

Cause
The cause of the blinking light pattern is one of the following conditions:
- The paper tray is empty.
- A paper jam has occurred.
- The paper size setting does not match the paper loaded in the tray.

Solutions

Important: You must follow these solutions in the order presented to resolve the issue.

Solution one: Load paper in the paper tray

If the product is out of paper, follow these steps to load paper into the paper tray.

Step one: Load the paper

Slide the paper width guide to its outermost position.
Load U.S. letter or A4, unused, plain white paper into the paper tray. Push the paper forward until it stops.

caution:
Make sure that the product is idle and silent when youload paper into the paper tray. If the product is servicing the cartridges or otherwise engaged in a task, the paper stop inside theproduct might not be in place. You could push the paper too far forward,causing the product to eject blank pages.
Slide the paper width guide inward until it stops at the edge of the paper. Do not push the guide in so tightly that it binds against the paper.

note:
Do not overload the paper tray; make sure that the stack of paper fits within the inputtray and is no higher than the top of the paper width guide.

Step two: Print a self-test page

Press and hold the Cancel button (), and then press the Start Copy Color button ().
Release both buttons at the same time. The self-test report prints.

If these steps resolved the issue, and the test page prints, there is no need to continue troubleshooting.
If the issue persists, continue with the next solution.
If the test page does not print, continue with the next solution.

Solution two: Clear the paper jam

Follow these steps in the order presented to clear the paper jam.

Step one: Remove any loose paper

Remove any loose sheets of paper from the input tray and the output tray.

caution:
Do not remove jammed paper at this stage. Trying to clear jammed paper from the front of the product can damage theprint mechanism.

Step two: Clear the paper jam from the rear of the product

caution:
Never pull jammed paper from the front of the product. If you can pull it from the rear of the product or the tray, always try the rear first. Pulling paper from inside the front cover can cause mechanical damage to the product.

Disconnect the USB cable from the rear of the product.
Disconnect the power cord from the rear of the product.
Press in the tab on the left side of the rear access door to release the door. Remove the door by pulling it away from the product.
Gently remove any jammed paper or bits of torn paper from the rollers inside the product. Use both hands to pull any whole sheets of paper to avoid tearing them.

caution:
If the paper tears when you are removing it from the rollers, check the rollers and wheels for torn pieces of paper that might remain inside the device. If you do not remove all the pieces of paper from the product, more paper jams are likely to occur.
Gently push the rear access door forward until it snaps into place.
Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the product.
Press the Power button () to turn on the product.
Print a self-test report.
1. Press and hold the Cancel button (), and then press the Start Copy Color button ().
2. Release both buttons at the same time. The self-test report prints.

If these steps resolved the issue, and the self-test report prints, there is no need to continue troubleshooting.
If the issue persists, continue with the next step.
If the self-test report does not print, continue with the next step.

Step three: Clear the jam from the front of the product

Use the following steps in the order presented to clear a paper jam from the front of the product.

Press the Power button () to turn off the product.
Disconnect the USB cable from the rear of the product.
Disconnect the power cord from the rear of the product.
Open the cartridge access door.
Gently pull the paper out of the rollers.

caution:
If the paper tears when you are removing it from the rollers, check the rollers and wheels for torn pieces of paper that might remain inside the device. If you do not remove all the pieces of paper from the product, more paper jams are likely to occur.
Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the product.
Reconnect the USB cable to the rear of the product.
Press the Power button () to turn on the product.
Check the control panel to see if the lights are still blinking.
Print a self-test report.
1. Press and hold the Cancel button (), and then press the Start Copy Color button ().
2. Release both buttons at the same time. The self-test report prints.

If these steps resolved the issue, and the self-test report prints, there is no need to continue troubleshooting.
If the issue persists, continue with the next step.
If the self-test report does not print, continue with the next step.

Step four: Make sure that the carriage moves freely

Use the following steps to make sure that the carriage moves freely.

Press the Power button () to turn on the product.
Open the cartridge access door.

If the carriage tries to move to the center of the product, allow it to move to that position.
Without turning off the product, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the product.

caution:
You must disconnect the power cord to move parts by hand without the risk of an electrical shock.
Unplug the power cord from the power source or electrical outlet.
Check for any paper or object that might be restricting the carriage.

note:
You might need a flashlight to illuminate areas for proper viewing.
Remove any loose paper or obstructions you find.
Reach inside the product, and then manually move the carriage.
- If the carriage is stuck on the right side of the product, move the carriage to the left side of the product.
- If the carriage is stuck on the left side of the product, move the carriage to the right side of the product.
- If the carriage is stuck in the middle of the product, move the carriage to the right side of the product.
Make sure that the carriage can move freely across the width of the product by gently pushing the carriage to the left and then to the right.
Close the cartridge access door.
Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the product.
Plug the power cord back into the power source or electrical outlet.
Press the Power button () to turn on the product.
Print a self-test report.
1. Press and hold the Cancel button (), and then press the Start Copy Color button ().
2. Release both buttons at the same time. The self-test report prints.

If these steps resolved the issue, and the self-test report prints, there is no need to continue troubleshooting.
If the issue persists, continue with the next step.
If the self-test report does not print, continue with the next step.

Step five: Clean the rollers

Dust, paper fiber, and other debris might accumulate on the paper feed rollers and cause paper jams and paper feed issues. Follow these steps to clean the paper feed rollers.

Gather the following materials:
- A clean, lint-free cloth, or any cloth that will not come apart or leave fibers
- Distilled, filtered, or bottled water (tap water might damage the product)
Press the Power button () to turn off the product.
Disconnect the power cord from the rear of the product.
Press in the tab on the left side of the rear access door to release the door. Pull the door away from the product to remove it.
Lightly dampen a clean, lint-free cloth with bottled or distilled water, and then squeeze any excess liquid from the cloth.
Press the cloth against the paper feed rollers, and then rotate them upwards with your fingers. Apply a moderate amount of pressure to remove any dust or dirt buildup.
Allow the rollers to dry for 10 to 15 minutes.
Check the paper feed rollers on the rear access door to make sure that they are clean, free of paper bits, and rotate freely.
Gently push the rear access door into the product until it snaps firmly into place.
Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the product.
If the product does not turn on automatically, press the Power button () to turn it on.
Print a self-test report.
1. Press and hold the Cancel button (), and then press the Start Copy Color button ().
2. Release both buttons at the same time. The self-test report prints.

If these steps resolved the issue, and the self-test report prints, there is no need to continue troubleshooting.
If the issue persists, continue with the next step.
If the self-test report does not print, continue with the next step.

Step six: Reset the product

Press the Power button () to turn on the product.
With the product turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the product.
Unplug the power cord from the electrical outlet.
Wait at least 15 seconds.
Plug the power cord back into the electrical outlet.
Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the product.
If the product does not turn on by itself, press the Power button () to turn it on.
Print a self-test report.
1. Press and hold the Cancel button (), and then press the Start Copy Color button ().
2. Release both buttons at the same time. The self-test report prints.

If these steps resolved the issue, you do not need to continue troubleshooting.
If the issue persists, continue to the next solution.

Solution three: Change the print driver settings

Use one of the following methods to change the paper size setting to match the print job. Create a custom paper size only if the correct paper size is not an option.

Step one: Change the settings

Choose your preferred method, and then follow the instructions to change the print driver settings.

Method one: Select an existing paper size

In the program you are printing in, click File, and then click Print. The Print window opens.
In the Name: drop-down list, select the correct product, if it is not already selected.
Click Properties or Preferences in the upper-right corner of the Print window. The Properties or Printing Preferences window opens.

note:
The name of the button or window depends on the software you are using.
Click the Features tab.
From the Size: drop-down list, click More to access the paper size options. The Size is: window opens.
In the Size is: list, scroll down to the appropriate paper size category, and then select the paper size that matches the paper loaded in the product.
Click OK to accept the settings.

Method two: Create a custom paper size

In the program you are printing in, click File, and then click Print. The Print window opens.
In the Name: drop-down list, select the correct product, if it is not already selected.
Click Properties or Preferences in the upper-right corner of the Print window. The Properties or Printing Preferences window opens.

note:
The name of the button or window depends on the software you are using.
Click the Features tab.
From the Size: drop-down list, click Custom. The Custom Paper Size window opens.
In the Name box, type a name for the paper size you are using. For example, if you are printing on 101.6 x 203.2 mm (4 x 8 inch) envelopes, type 4x8 envelopes.

note:
You must type a custom size name in the Name box. If you do not, the Save button is unavailable when you try to save the setting.
In the Paper Size area, type the measurements in the Width and Length boxes. For example, if you are printing on 101.6 x 203.2 mm (4 x 8 inch) envelopes, type 4 in the Width box, and type 8 in the Length box.
In the Units area, select the appropriate unit of measure, and then click Save.

note:
If Save is unavailable, make sure that there is a name for the setting in the Name box.
Click OK to accept the settings. The Custom Paper Size window closes.
From the Size: drop-down list on the Features tab, click More.
The Size is: window opens.
In the Size is: list, scroll down to Custom, and then select the custom paper size you created.
Click OK to accept the settings.

Step two: Print a self-test page

Press and hold the Cancel button (), and then press the Start Copy Color button ().
Release both buttons at the same time. The self-test report prints.

If these steps resolved the issue, and the test page prints, there is no need to continue troubleshooting.
If the issue persists, continue with the next solution.
If the test page does not print, continue with the next solution.

Solution four: Service the printer

If you have completed all the steps and are still experiencing a problem, continue to the Service the All-in-One section at the end of this document.

Issue: The Print Cartridge light is blinking

In this error condition, the following control panel blinking lights pattern displays:

Power light: On
Paper light: Off
Print Cartridge light: Blinking
Plain Paper Type light: Off
Photo Paper Type light: Off

note:
In addition to the blinking light, an "E" might appear in the Copies area.

Cause
The cause of this blinking light pattern is one of the following conditions:
- The cartridge access door is open.
- The cartridges are not installed, not seated fully, or the protective tape is still on the cartridges.
- A cartridge is defective or low on ink.

Solutions

Important: You must follow these solutions in the order presented to resolve the issue.

Solution one: Close the cartridge access door securely

If the cartridge access door is open even slightly, the print cartridge light will blink. Follow these steps in the order given to close the cartridge access door securely.

Step one: Close the cartridge access door

Open the cartridge access door. The carriage moves to the center of the product.
Check inside the product to make sure that there are no obstructions that are preventing the cartridge access door from closing securely.
Remove any obstructions you find.
Close the cartridge access door. Make sure that it closes completely.

Step two: Print a self-test page

Press and hold the Cancel button (), and then press the Start Copy Color button ().
Release both buttons at the same time. The self-test report prints.

If these steps resolved the issue, and the test page prints, there is no need to continue troubleshooting.
If the issue persists, continue with the next solution.
If the test page does not print, continue with the next solution.

Solution two: Make sure that the cartridges are installed

Follow these steps to make sure that the cartridges are installed in the product.

Step one: Check the carriage

Open the cartridge access door.The carriage moves to the center of the product.
Wait until the carriage is idle and silent.
Check the cartridge slots in the carriage to make sure that the cartridges are installed.
- If the cartridges are installed, skip to the solution for removing and then reinstalling the cartridges.
- If the cartridges are not installed, continue to the next step.

Step two: Install the cartridges

Slide the paper width guide to its outermost position.
Load U.S. letter or A4, unused, plain white paper into the paper tray. Push the paper forward until it stops.

note:
Do not overload the paper tray. Make sure that the stack of paper fits within the papertray and is no higher than the top of the paper width guide.
Slide the paper width guide inward until it stops at the edge of the paper. Do not push the guide in so tightly that it binds against the paper.
Remove the new cartridge from its packaging.
Remove the pink pull tab covering the nozzles.

caution:
Do not touch the cartridge contacts or nozzles.
Hold the cartridge by its sides.
Slide the cartridge into its designated slot at a slightly upward angle. The black parallelogram icon () designates the slot for the black cartridge, and the magenta half circle icon () designates the slot for the color cartridge.
Press the cartridge inward to snap it into place.
Repeat these steps to insert the other cartridge into its designated slot.
Close the cartridge access door.
Wait while the product prints an alignment page.
Load the alignment page face down on the left front corner of the scanner glass with the top of the page to the left.
Lower the scanner lid, and then press the Scan button ( to complete the alignment.
Discard or recycle the alignment page.

If these steps resolved the issue, you do not need to continue troubleshooting.
If the issue persists, continue to the next solution.

Solution three: Remove and then reinstall the cartridges

Follow these steps in the order given to remove and then reinstall the cartridges.

Step one: Remove the cartridges

Press the Power button () to turn on the product.
Open the cartridge access door.The carriage moves to the center of the product.
Wait until the carriage is idle and silent.
Lightly press down on acartridge to release it, and then pull the cartridge toward you out of its slot.
Tri-color print cartridge

Black and photo print cartridge
- Remove the tri-color cartridge from theslot on the left.
- Remove the black or photo cartridgefrom the slot on the right.
Check the nozzles on the cartridges to see if the protective tape is still attached.
- If there is no protective tape on the cartridge, continue to the next step in this solution.
- If the protective tape is still on the cartridge, gently pull the pink pull tab to remove the protective plastic tape.

Repeat these steps to remove the other cartridge.

Step two: Reinstall the cartridges

Hold the cartridge by its sides.
Slide the cartridge into its designated slot at a slightly upward angle. The black parallelogram icon () designates the slot for the black cartridge, and the magenta half circle icon () designates the slot for the color cartridge.
Press the cartridge inward until it snaps into place.
Repeat these steps to reinstall the other cartridge.
Close the cartridge access door.

Step three: Print a self-test page

Press and hold the Cancel button (), and then press the Start Copy Color button ().
Release both buttons at the same time. The self-test report prints.

If these steps resolved the issue, and the test page prints, there is no need to continue troubleshooting.
If the issue persists, continue with the next solution.
If the test page does not print, continue with the next solution.

Solution four: Replace a defective cartridge

Follow these steps to replace a defective cartridge. A defective cartridge can be damaged or low on ink.

Step one: Remove the cartridge

Press the Power button () to turn on the product.
Open the cartridge access door.The carriage moves to the center of the product.
Wait until the carriage is idle and silent.
Lightly press down on the blackcartridge to release it, and then pull the cartridge toward you out of its slot.

note:
Remove the black or photo cartridgefrom the slot on the right.

Step two: Find out which cartridge is defective

Close the cartridge access door.
Check the Power light ().
- If the Power light blinks, reinsert the black cartridge, and then replace the current tri-color cartridge with a new tri-color print cartridge.
- If the Power light does not blink, do not reinsert the old black cartridge. Insert a new black cartridge into the product.

Step two: Install the new cartridge

Slide the paper width guide to its outermost position.
Load U.S. letter or A4, unused, plain white paper into the paper tray. Push the paper forward until it stops.

note:

Issue: The Paper and Print Cartridge lights are blinking

In this error condition, the following blinking lights pattern displays on the control panel:

Power light: On
Paper light: Blinking
Print Cartridge light: Blinking
Plain Paper Type light: Off
Photo Paper Type light: Off

Cause
- The product has a paper jam.
- The control panel overlay is not attached at all or is not attached correctly.
- The power supply is inadequate.

Solutions

Important: You must follow these solutions in the order presented to resolve the issue.

Solution one: Attach the control panel overlay

If the control panel overlay, or bezel, is incorrectly installed, the product might indicate a false error condition. If the product has not been set up before, follow these instructions to install the overlay.

caution:
If you have already installed the control panel overlay, and your product has been working for some time, do not attempt to reinstall the overlay. Press firmly on the overlay to ensure proper installation of the overlay adhesive or pins, and then skip to Step two.

Step one: Attach the control panel overlay

Press the Power button () to turn off the product.
Find the front panel cover, and then peel off the paper backing to expose the adhesive.
Lift the scanner lid.
Carefully line up the control panel overlay over the control panel, and then press it down firmly onto the product.
Press the Power button () to turn off the product.

Step two: Print a self-test page

Press and hold the Cancel button (), and then press the Start Copy Color button ().
Release both buttons at the same time. The self-test report prints.

If these steps resolved the issue, and the test page prints, there is no need to continue troubleshooting.
If the issue persists, continue with the next solution.
If the test page does not print, continue with the next solution.

Solution two: Plug the product directly into a wall outlet

The power strip or surge suppressor might not allow enough voltage to reach the product. Follow these steps to connect the power cord to a wall outlet

Make sure that the computer and the product power cords have three-prong power plugs.
Disconnect the power cord from the rear of the product.
Unplug the power cord from any power strip or surge suppressor.
Plug the power cord directly into a grounded wall outlet.
Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the product.
Try the task again.

If these steps resolved the issue, you do not need to continue troubleshooting.
If the issue persists, continue to the next solution.

Solution three: Clear a paper jam from the rear of the printer

Follow these steps in the order presented to clear the paper jam.

Step one: Remove any loose paper

Remove any loose sheets of paper from the input tray and the output tray.

caution:
Do not remove jammed paper at this stage. Trying to clear jammed paper from the front of the product can damage theprint mechanism.

Step two: Clear the paper jam from the rear of the product

caution:
Never pull jammed paper from the front of the product. If you can pull it from the rear of the product or the tray, always try the rear first. Pulling paper from inside the front cover can cause mechanical damage to the product.

Disconnect the USB cable from the rear of the product.
Disconnect the power cord from the rear of the product.
Press in the tab on the left side of the rear access door to release the door. Remove the door by pulling it away from the product.
Gently remove any jammed paper or bits of torn paper from the rollers inside the product. Use both hands to pull any whole sheets of paper to avoid tearing them.

caution:
If the paper tears when you are removing it from the rollers, check the rollers and wheels for torn pieces of paper that might remain inside the device. If you do not remove all the pieces of paper from the product, more paper jams are likely to occur.
Gently push the rear access door forward until it snaps into place.
Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the product.
Press the Power button () to turn on the product.
Check the control panel to see if the lights are still blinking.

Step three: Print a self-test page

Press and hold the Cancel button (), and then press the Start Copy Color button ().
Release both buttons at the same time. The self-test report prints.

If these steps resolved the issue, and the test page prints, there is no need to continue troubleshooting.
If the issue persists, continue with the next solution.
If the test page does not print, continue with the next solution.

Solution four: Clear the jam from the front of the product

Use the following steps in the order presented to clear a paper from the front of the product.

Step one: Clear the paper jam

Press the Power button () to turn off the product.
Disconnect the power cord from the rear of the product.
Open the cartridge access door.
Gently pull the paper out of the rollers.

caution:
If the paper tears when you are removing it from the rollers, check the rollers and wheels for torn pieces of paper that might remain inside the device. If you do not remove all the pieces of paper from the product, more paper jams are likely to occur.
Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the product.
Reconnect the USB cable to the rear of the product.
Press the Power button () to turn on the product.

Step two: Make sure that the carriage moves freely

Open the cartridge access door.

If the carriage tries to move to the center of the product, allow it to move to that position.
Without turning off the product, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the product.

caution:
You must disconnect the power cord to move parts by hand without the risk of an electrical shock.
Unplug the power cord from the power source or electrical outlet.
Check for any paper or object that might be restricting the carriage.

note:
You might need a flashlight to illuminate areas for proper viewing.
Remove any loose paper or obstructions you find.
Reach inside the product, and then manually move the carriage.
- If the carriage is stuck on the right side of the product, move the carriage to the left side of the product.
- If the carriage is stuck on the left side of the product, move the carriage to the right side of the product.
- If the carriage is stuck in the middle of the product, move the carriage to the right side of the product.
Make sure that the carriage can move freely across the width of the product by gently pushing the carriage to the left and then to the right.
Close the cartridge access door.
Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the product.
Plug the power cord back into the power source or electrical outlet.
Press the Power button () to turn on the product.

Step three: Print a self-test page

Press and hold the Cancel button (), and then press the Start Copy Color button ().
Release both buttons at the same time. The self-test report prints.

If these steps resolved the issue, and the test page prints, there is no need to continue troubleshooting.
If the issue persists, continue with the next solution.
If the test page does not print, continue with the next solution.

Solution five: Remove and then reinstall the cartridges

Follow these steps in the order given to remove and then reinstall the cartridges.

Step one: Remove the cartridges

Press the Power button () to turn on the product.
Open the cartridge access door.The carriage moves to the center of the product.
Wait until the carriage is idle and silent.
Lightly press down on acartridge to release it, and then pull the cartridge toward you out of its slot.
Tri-color print cartridge

- Remove the tri-color cartridge from theslot on the left.
- Remove the black or photo cartridgefrom the slot on the right.
Check the nozzles on the cartridges to see if the protective tape is still attached.
- If there is no protective tape on the cartridge, continue to the next step in this solution.
- If the protective tape is still on the cartridge, gently pull the pink pull tab to remove the protective plastic tape.

Solution six: Clean the rollers

Dust, paper fiber, and other debris might accumulate on the paper feed rollers and cause paper jams and paper feed issues. Follow these steps to clean the paper feed rollers.

Step one: Clean the rollers

Gather the following materials:
- A clean, lint-free cloth, or any cloth that will not come apart or leave fibers
- Distilled, filtered, or bottled water (tap water might damage the product)
Press the Power button () to turn off the product.
Disconnect the power cord from the rear of the product.
Press in the tab on the left side of the rear access door to release the door. Pull the door away from the product to remove it.
Lightly dampen a clean, lint-free cloth with bottled or distilled water, and then squeeze any excess liquid from the cloth.
Press the cloth against the paper feed rollers, and then rotate them upwards with your fingers. Apply a moderate amount of pressure to remove any dust or dirt buildup.
Allow the rollers to dry for 10 to 15 minutes.
Check the paper feed rollers on the rear access door to make sure that they are clean, free of paper bits, and rotate freely.
Gently push the rear access door into the product until it snaps firmly into place.
Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the product.
If the product does not turn on automatically, press the Power button () to turn it on.

Step two: Print a self-test page

Press and hold the Cancel button (), and then press the Start Copy Color button ().
Release both buttons at the same time. The self-test report prints.

If these steps resolved the issue, and the test page prints, there is no need to continue troubleshooting.
If the issue persists, continue with the next solution.
If the test page does not print, continue with the next solution.

Solution seven: Reset the product

Follow these steps in the order given to reset the product.

Step one: Perform a partial reset

Press the Power button () to turn off the product.
With the product turned off, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the product.
Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.
Wait at least 15 seconds.
Plug the power cord back into the wall outlet.
Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the product.
If the product does not turn on by itself, press the Power button () to turn it on.

Step two: Print a self-test page

Press and hold the Cancel button (), and then press the Start Copy Color button ().
Release both buttons at the same time. The self-test report prints.

If these steps resolved the issue, and the test page prints, there is no need to continue troubleshooting.
If the issue persists, continue with the next solution.
If the test page does not print, continue with the next solution.

Solution eight: Service the printer

Issue: The Power light, Paper light, and Print Cartridge light are blinking

Issue: All the lights are blinking

In this error condition, the following control panel blinking lights pattern displays:

Solutions

Solution one: Reset the product

Wait at least 15 seconds.

Solution two: Service the printer
