HP Printers - Printing with Apple AirPrint

This document is for HP AirPrint-compatible printers with wireless features.

You can use AirPrint to send print jobs over a wireless network to compatible HP printers. Read this document for answers to frequently asked questions (FAQs) that help you print with AirPrint.

What is Apple AirPrint?

AirPrint is a mobile printing solution included with the Apple iOS v4.2 and later mobile operating systems.

iPad, iPhone, and iPod touch users can print wirelessly to any ePrint-enabled HP printer that is connected to the same local wireless network. Most HP printers released in 2010 and later support AirPrint.

Many Apple apps support AirPrint, including Safari, Mail, Photos, and iWorks. Additionally, other popular apps available in the App Store are supported. In the app, tap the Action icon

, and then tap Print to print with AirPrint.

note:

If the Action icon or the Print button does not display in an app, the app does not support AirPrint at this time.

Which HP printers are compatible with Apple AirPrint?

Support for Apple Airprint spans all HP product lines. To see if Apple AirPrint is compatible with your HP printer, select the appropriate product line, and then check if your printer is listed.

HP Deskjet printers

The following Deskjet printers are compatible with AirPrint. These printers might require a firmware update to enable AirPrint compatibility, depending on the model and purchase date. HP always recommends updating to the latest firmware version for the best performance and functionality.

Follow these steps to download the firmware from the HP website

Turn on the printer.
If your printer is connected to the computer with a USB cable, disconnect the cable from the printer.
Go to HP Customer Support - Software and Driver Downloads.
If prompted, select a method to identify your printer model, and then follow the on-screen instructions to go to the download page.
Click Firmware, and then click Download.
Use the HP Download and Install Assistant for a guided firmware download and installation, or select Download only to manually open or run the driver file through your Internet browser’s download tools.

What are the requirements to print with AirPrint?

Make sure that you meet the following requirements to print with AirPrint.

An Apple iPad, iPhone, or iPod touch that runs iOS 4.2 or later

iOS 4.2 or later can be installed as an update to a current or older Apple device, or should already be installed on a new Apple iPad, iPhone, or iPod touch.

note:

Not all features are compatible with all Apple devices. AirPrint and multitasking are available on iPad (all models), iPhone (3GS or later), and iPod touch (third generation or later).
An HP printer that supports AirPrint

HP wireless printers released in 2010 and later support AirPrint.
A private wireless network

The Apple device (iPad, iPhone, or iPod touch) and the HP printer must be connected to the same private 802.11 wireless network. AirPrint uses Bonjour, Apple's zero-configuration networking, to automatically discover your wireless printer over the local network.
Apps that support AirPrint

Many Apple apps support AirPrint, including Safari, Mail, Photos, and iWorks. Additionally, other popular apps available in the App Store are supported.

To print from an app, tap the Action icon ( or ), and then tap Print to print with AirPrint.

note:

If the Action icon or the Print button does not display, the app does not support AirPrint at this time.
Note the following unsupported items:
- AirPrint is not supported through public wireless networks such as public Wi-Fi hotspots, Bluetooth connections, or on cellular 3G or 4G data connections.
- AirPrint is supported on OS X v10.7 Lion or later.
- AirPrint is only compatible with HP printers released in 2010 and later. AirPrint is not backward compatible with older products and there is no workaround to enable backward compatibility with older HP products.

How do I update the printer firmware?

The steps to obtain the firmware update depend on the type of printer that you have. Select your printer from the following options, and then follow the steps to obtain the update.

HP Officejet and Photosmart printers

Follow these steps to update Officejet and Photosmart printers.

If the product connects to a network with internet access, you can update the firmware through the front panel. In most cases, the firmware will automatically update as necessary. In order for this to occur, you must enable web services.

Follow these steps to activate HP Web-connected printing services, and to update the firmware.

On the product control panel, touch Apps, Web Services, or ePrint, depending on your product model.
If prompted to enable Web services, touch Yes, and then follow the on-screen instructions.
If prompted to update the product, touch Yes, and then follow the on-screen instructions.

HP LaserJet printers

Follow these steps to update LaserJet printers.

Turn on the printer.
If your printer is connected to the computer with a USB cable, disconnect the cable from the printer.
Go to HP Customer Support - Software and Driver Downloads.
If prompted, select a method to identify your printer model, and then follow the on-screen instructions to go to the download page.
Click Firmware, and then click Download.
Use the HP Download and Install Assistant for a guided firmware download and installation, or select Download only to manually open or run the driver file through your Internet browser’s download tools.

What is the difference between Apple's AirPrint and HP ePrint?

The following differences describe AirPrint and HP ePrint:

Apple AirPrint: AirPrint works over your private wireless network to print directly from supported apps on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch (each runs on iOS 4.2 or later) to a compatible HP printer.
HP ePrint: ePrint is a free service from HP that lets you print from any mobile device with email capabilities to any ePrint-enabled printer that you can access. You can simply send an email to print with ePrint, and it requires no additional software or print driver downloads to use the service.

How do I send a print job using Apple AirPrint?

Follow these steps to print from your Apple mobile device to your local HP printer with AirPrint.

Step 1: Select your printer

Follow these steps to locate and select your printer.

In the app that you want to print from, tap the Action icon ( or ) to display the menu options.

note:

Some apps might not have an Action icon as a feature. If the icon does not display, you cannot print from that particular app with AirPrint.
Tap Print. The Printer Options menu displays.

note:

Some apps might not offer a print option because the app is not currently compatible with AirPrint. If Print is not an available action option, you cannot print from that particular app with AirPrint.
On the Printer Options menu, tap Select Printer. A list of available printers on the network displays.

Tap your HP ePrint printer in the drop-down menu. The Printer Options menu displays again and shows your selected printer.

If you do not need to change print options, tap Print to send the print job to the HP printer.
If you need to change print options, continue to the next step.

Step 2: Change print options

Apple AirPrint allows you to print Web pages, documents, emails, photos, and content from apps that support AirPrint. Print options might vary depending on the app you use to print from and on the HP printer.

The following print options might display after you tap Print, and then select your printer:

Number of copies

In the Printer Options menu, tap the Plus sign () or the Minus sign () next to Copy as needed to select the number of copies.

Paper

In the Printer Options menu, tap Paper to change the paper size.

Two-sided printing

In the Printer Options menu, next to Double-sided tap On to enable two-sided printing, or tap Off to disable two-sided printing.

note:

If the HP printer does not support two-sided printing, the Double-sided option does not display.

Page range

If you print with a file type, such as a PDF, that has multiple pages, tap Range in the Printer Options menu, and then tap All Pages or select the page range that you want to print.

note:

Range will only display with certain applications and file types, such as PDFs.

What if a 'No AirPrint Printers Found' message displays on my Apple device?

When you try to print from your Apple device with Apple AirPrint, a No AirPrint Printers Found message displays. To resolve the issue, restart all devices, update the printer and Apple device, and make sure all devices are on the same network.

Step 1: Move the router closer to the printer

Make sure other household items do not interfere with the wireless signal, and then move the router closer to the printer.

Move the router away from household items that can interfere with the wireless signal, such as microwave ovens and cordless phones.
Move the printer closer to the wireless router.
Make sure your router is set at 2.4 GHz.

If you are unsure how to check this setting, contact your Internet Service Provider (ISP).

Step 2: Restart all devices, and make sure they are on the same network

Restart the router and printer, verify wireless connectivity and status on a Network Configuration page, and then turn on the Apple device to check wireless settings.

Turn off the router, and then turn it on.

Contact the router manufacturer for instructions on how to turn off the router.

note:

Do not reset the router.
Turn off the printer, and then turn it on.
Turn off the Apple device.

note:

Do not turn on the Apple device yet.
Print a Network Configuration page.

For instructions on printing a Network Configuration page, go to HP Customer Support. Type your printer model, and then search for the document to "print a configuration page."
Check the Active Connection Type in the General Information section on the report. The connection type should be Wireless.
Check the status in the 802.11 Wireless section on the report. The status should be Connected. The printer IP Address also displays in the 802.11 section of the report for active wireless connections.
Make sure the Network Name (SSID) on the report is the same as the name of the wireless network for your networked printer.
- If the HP printer is connected to the correct wireless network, continue with these steps.
- If the HP printer is not connected to the correct wireless network, go to HP Customer Care, type your printer model in the search field, and then browse to the support document about how to connect your printer to a wireless network.
Turn on your Apple device.
Tap the Settings icon .
Tap Wi-Fi.
Make sure Wi-Fi is turned on and there is a checkmark next to your wireless network name.
Return to the Settings menu, and then make sure Bluetooth is turned off.
Move your Apple device closed to the router, but bake sure your Apple device is no closer than 1.8 m (6 ft) to the router.

Try to print. If the issue persists, continue to the next step.

Step 3: Update the printer firmware

Download and install the latest printer firmware

Turn on the printer.
If your printer is connected to the computer with a USB cable, disconnect the cable from the printer.
Go to HP Customer Support - Software and Driver Downloads.
If prompted, select a method to identify your printer model, and then follow the on-screen instructions to go to the download page.
Click Firmware, and then click Download.
Use the HP Download and Install Assistant for a guided firmware download and installation, or select Download only to manually open or run the driver file through your Internet browser’s download tools.

Step 4: Upgrade the Apple device firmware

Update your Apple device with the latest iOS version.

Turn on your Apple device.
Tap the Settings icon ().
Tap General, and then tap Software Updates.
If an update is available, tap Download, and then tap Install or Install Now.

Try to print. If the issue persists, continue to the next step.

Step 5: Make sure AirPrint is enabled

Open the Embedded Web Server (EWS), and then make sure AirPrint is enabled.

Print a Network Configuration page to obtain the printer IP address needed to view the EWS webpage.

For instructions on printing a Network Configuration page, go to HP Customer Support. Type your printer model, and then search for the document to "print a configuration page."
Find the printer IP address on the Network Configuration page.

On your computer, open an Internet browser.
Type the printer IP address in the browser address bar, and then press Enter.

note:

Make sure to type the IP address into the Internet browser's address box. If typed into a toolbar search box or search engine, the EWS does not open.
If a website security certificate displays in the Internet browser, click Continue.

The EWS information page for the printer opens.
Click the Settings tab.
Click Security, and then click Administrator Settings.
Under Network Settings, select AirPrint, if it is not already selected, and then click Apply.

Restart the printer.

Try to print. If the issue persists, continue to the next step.

Step 6: Make sure the router can forward Bonjour packets

Not all wireless routers support Bonjour or all of Bonjour's features. Since Bonjour is the default method for discovering printers on a network, you must first make sure your wireless router supports Bonjour, and then turn the Apple device off and on.

Check the specifications or support documentation for your router or contact the router manufacturer to make sure your router supports Bonjour. It must also support forwarding Bonjour packets.

If your router supports Bonjour, skip to the next step.
If your router does not support Bonjour, use a router that supports Bonjour or add the printer to your printer list using the IP tab and the printer IP address.

Try to print. If the issue persists, continue to the next step.

Step 7: Try to print from another device or computer

Try to print from another networked device to the HP printer. Examples of networked devices include your computer and another Apple device.

If the printer is found, continue to the next step.
If the printer is not found, go to Printer Does Not Maintain Wireless Connection.

Step 8: Reset the HP printer

Reset the printer, and then try to print again.

Turn the printer on, if it is not already on.
Wait until the printer is idle and silent before you continue.
With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer.
Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.
Wait at least 60 seconds.
Plug the power cord back into the wall outlet.

note:

HP recommends connecting the printer power cord directly to the wall outlet.
Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the printer.
Turn on the printer, if it does not automatically turn on.

The printer might go through a warm-up period. The printer lights might flash, and the carriage might move.
Wait until the warm-up period finishes and your printer is idle and silent before you proceed.

What if I experience problems when I try to use AirPrint?

If you are unable to print to a local HP printer with AirPrint, follow these troubleshooting tips:

Make sure the printer is turned on. If the printer is on, turn it off and then on again to see whether that resolves the issue.
Make sure that the printer is wirelessly connected to the same network subnet as your iOS device.
Make sure that the printer has the latest firmware version installed.
Make sure that the printer has paper in the tray, and that ink or toner is not empty.
Make sure that there are no error messages on the printer control panel.

note:

Wi-Fi printers can take several minutes to join a Wi-Fi network after they turn on. Make sure that your printer is connected to the Wi-Fi network before you attempt to print.

What printing options are available?

Apple AirPrint allows you to print Web pages, emails, photos, and content from apps that have integrated AirPrint. Print options might vary depending on the print app that you use and the HP printer that you select.

In general, there are up to five print options that display (depending on the printer and the file type) after you tap Print, and then select your printer:

Select a printer: Select from available printers on your local network that you want to print to.
Number of copies: Select the number of copies of the document or image that you want to print.
Paper: You can select the paper size that you want to print if your printer has an adjustable paper tray that supports different paper sizes.
Double-sided printing: You can choose to print on both sides of the paper if your printer supports two-sided (duplex) printing.
Page range: You can select certain pages within a document to print. Page range is only available with certain apps and file types, such as PDFs.

How do I select or change print options?

Apple AirPrint allows you to print Web pages, documents, emails, photos, and content from apps that support AirPrint. Print options might vary depending on the print app that you use to print with the HP printer.

The following print options might display after you tap Print, and then select your printer:

Number of copies

How do I monitor print jobs and view the print queue?

While a print job transmits to the printer, Print Center displays in the most recently used application list. After the print job completes, Print Center is not available.

To check the status of your print job, press the Home button (

) twice, and then tap the Print Center icon at the bottom of the Home screen.

note:

Print Center is strictly a status monitor for print jobs, and only displays while a print job transmits to the printer.

How do I cancel a print job?

There are two ways to cancel a print job with AirPrint:

From the printer control panel: Press the Cancel button () to cancel the print job.
From the Apple device: Press the Home button () twice, tap the Print Center icon at the bottom of the screen, and then tap Cancel Printing in the Print Summary menu.

What paper and media sizes are supported?

With AirPrint, you can either select the paper and photo media sizes, or they are automatically selected depending on the application you use on your Apple device, your HP ePrint printer, and the region in which you use AirPrint.

For example, from Apple’s Photo application, if the HP ePrint printer has a separate photo paper tray, AirPrint uses 4 x 6 in photo media as the default paper size. If the printer does not have a separate photo paper tray, AirPrint uses letter-size paper. If the printer has a shared paper and photo paper tray with adjustable paper width guides, you can select which paper size you want to print. If you print from Apple’s Safari browser, letter-size paper is the default paper size in the US region, and A4 is the default paper size in Europe.
