Setting up the HP Printer with the HP Wireless Printing Upgrade Kit in Windows 7

Introduction
The HP Wireless Printing Upgrade Kit replaces the USB cable to allow you the freedom of wireless communication between the HP product and the computer. You can also share the HP product with other computers over an existing wireless network.
 note:
The HP Wireless Printing Upgrade Kit is no longer available for purchase. The kit is not supported on a Macintosh system.

Setting up the printer with the HP Wireless Printing Upgrade Kit
Follow these steps first to set up the wireless printing upgrade kit and the printer on your computer. After you complete these steps, you can continue to the section in this document on adding the printer to an existing wireless network.
Step one: Unpack the kit and check the box contents
Unpack the HP Wireless Printing Upgrade Kit. Make sure that the kit includes the following items.

  1. Printer adapter
  2. Computer adapter
  3. HP Wireless Printing Upgrade Kit CD
  4. USB cable
  5. Power cord
Step two: Connect the printer adapter
  1. Turn off the HP product.
  2. Connect the USB cable to the printer adapter and the USB port on the back of the HP product.
     note:
    Even if the HP product has a USB port on the front, use only the port on the back.
  3. Plug the power cord into the printer adapter and the power outlet. Make sure that the first two lights turn on.

  4. Turn on the product.
Step three: Enable Windows Update
  1. Make sure that the computer connects to the Internet correctly.
  2. On the Windows taskbar, click the Windows icon ().
  3. In the Search programs and files text box, type Change device installation settings, and then press Enter.
  4. In the Device Installation Settings window, click to select Yes, do this automatically, and then click Save Changes.
Step four: Install the upgrade kit software
A Windows Vista driver for your product is available to use as a workaround in Windows 7. A Windows 7 driver will not be released. Follow these steps to install the kit.
 note:
Do not connect the computer adapter until prompted to do so.
  1. Close all software programs except for the firewall program. Also, close any HP software such as HP Solution Center or HP Director.
     note:
    Respond to any firewall questions concerning the HP Wireless Printing Upgrade Kit software by clicking Always allow or Yes.
  2. Instead of using the CD to install the software, follow these steps to install the most recent software from the HP Web site:
    1. Click Download, and then follow the on-screen instructions to save the software to your computer.
    2. Open the folder where the software file saved (usually Downloads), double-click the file, and then follow the on-screen instructions to begin the installation.
  3. When the installation reaches 90% on the top bar and 10% at the bottom bar, it hangs and does not progress. Follow these steps to continue the installation.

    1. Right-click the taskbar near the Windows icon (), and then click Start Task Manager.
    2. Click the Applications tab, right-click Wireless Printing upgrade kit, and then select Go to process from the menu that displays.
    3. Highlight SetupWizard.exe, and then click End process. If a window opens and asks you whether you want to end the process, click End process.

    4. The Program Compatibility Assistant window opens and indicates that the program might not have installed correctly. Select Reinstall using recommended settings, and then allow Windows 7 to complete the installation.

      • Program Compatibility Assistant does not open?
        • If the Program Compatibility Assistant does not open, continue with the installation anyway.
        • If you are unable to print wirelessly after the installation, uninstall and reinstall the Wireless Printing Upgrade Kit.
    5. When the installer extracts and runs again, click Install.
  4. Follow the on-screen instructions to install the software.
     note:
    Some of the dialog boxes might open behind the installer window. If the software installation seems to stop for too long, check for windows or dialog boxes hidden behind other windows.
  5. When prompted, insert the computer adapter into a USB port on the computer.

     note:
    If it is difficult to insert the computer adapter into the USB port, buy an extension cable or swivel extender for the port.
  6. Click Finish to complete the software installation.
     note:
    Leave this box checked: For best results, allow all users full printer access. If this box is cleared, only an administrator can restart the HP product if it pauses due to being out of paper or other causes.
    At the end of the installation, a new window opens and prompts you to install the product software before you can use the product. Continue with the next step to install the product software.
Step five: Set up the HP product connection
Select one of the following connection methods, depending on whether you already installed your HP product software and drivers.
Step five: Test the setup
After you complete all of the previous steps, try printing a document to make sure that the set up works correctly.
  1. Open a document.
  2. Click File, and then click Print. The Print window opens.
  3. In the Name drop-down list, click your wireless product from the list of products.
    TIP
    Your list of products now contains two or more products. For example, the list might contain HP PSC 1400 series and HP PSC 1400 series (Wireless). To print, select the product with (Wireless) following the name.
  4. Click OK or Print to print the document.
