Red Hat/SUSE Enterprise Linux - Multipath Device Mapper Software: Installation for Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) 5 Update 3, SUSE Linux Enterprise Server (SLES) 10 SP3, and SLES 11

Information
Beginning with Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) 5 Update 3, Novell SUSE Linux Enterprise Server (SLES) 10 Service Pack 3 (SP3) (not yet released), and SLES 11, HP no longer provides drivers for Qlogic or Emulex fibre HBAs. The HBA drivers that must be used are the in-box drivers provided by Red Hat or Novell.
Details
When using RHEL 5 Update 3 or SLES 10 SP3, use the drivers provided on the operating system distribution/update distribution. The current versions of HBA drivers as of the date of this article are:
  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) 5 Update 3
    Qlogic - 8.02.00.06.05.03-k
    Emulex - 8.2.0.33.3p
  • SUSE Linux Enterprise Server (SLES) 11
    Qlogic - 8.02.01.03.11.0-k9
    Emulex - 8.2.8.14
  • SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 10 Service Pack 3 (SP3)
Qlogic - TBD upon release of SP3
Emulex - TBD upon release of SP3
With the in-box fibre HBA drivers installed, follow these steps to install the Device Mapper Multipath Software:
  1. Download and install the Linux In-Box Driver Kit, also known as the HP-FC Enablement Kit.
    1. Start at the Fibre Channel Host Bus Adapters web page.
Click here to go to the "Fibre Channel Host Bus Adapters" web page at: http://h18006.www1.hp.com/storage/saninfrastructure/hba.html.
    2. Choose the HBA type. On the next page, choose Software and Drivers.
    3. Next, choose the correct Linux version.
    4. Install the HP-FC Enablement Kit, which does not contain any drivers.
It includes tools to enable easier management of the Device Mapper LUNs. Some of the tools included are the lssd command, the hp_rescan command and the adapter_info command.
  2. Download and install the Device Mapper Enablement Kit. The kits are located at the Download drivers and software web page. Click here to go to the "Download drivers and software" web page at: http://www.hp.com/go/devicemapper.
Different versions of the Enablement Kit have been released to support different models of storage arrays. The kits are cumulative, meaning that each kit contains all the previous updates. The README file in the kits will tells us what storage array types are added with a specific version of the kit.
