Blinking Lights on the HP Officejet 6000 (E609a) and 6000 Wireless (E609n) Printers

Introduction

The lights on the front of the product indicate the product status. These lights can be on, off, or blinking (flashing), depending on the status of the product. The Power, Resume, Network/Wireless button lights and Cartridge lights can all blink in distinct patterns to indicate the product status or error conditions.
note:
This document describes the light patterns on your product as blinking or flashing lights. In this document, "flashing" means the same as "blinking."

Blinking Lights

The following sections describe the most common combinations of blinking lights, followed by solutions for each combination. Find the blinking-lights pattern you are experiencing, and then follow the steps to resolve the issue.
note:
There might be more than one solution for some blinking-lights patterns. After you find the pattern that matches your blinking-lights pattern, try each solution to resolve the issue.

Solution: No action necessary
The Power button () light blinks when the product is processing a print job or waiting for the ink to dry. You do not need to take any action. Wait for the print job to complete or the ink to dry.

Solution one: Clear any paper jam
Follow these steps to clear a paper jam from the product.
Step one: Remove any loose paper
Remove any loose sheets of paper from the input tray and the output tray.
  caution:
Do not remove jammed paper at this stage. Trying to clear jammed paper from the front of the product can damage the print mechanism.
Step two: Clear the jam
These steps are only basic instructions for clearing a paper jam. If you prefer detailed steps, click here for step-by-step instructions on clearing a paper jam (c01716498).
  caution:
Do not try to clear a paper jam from the front of the product, which can damage the print mechanism.
  1. Turn off the product, and then turn it to access its rear side.
  2. Remove the rear access panel or duplexer.
  3. Gently remove any jammed paper from the rollers.
      caution:
    If the paper tears while removing it from the rollers, check the rollers and wheels for torn pieces of paper that might remain inside the product. If any torn pieces of paper remain inside the product, more paper jams are likely to occur.
  4. Reattach the rear access panel or duplexer.
  5. Open the top cover of the product, and then remove any torn pieces of paper from the opening.
  6. Turn on the product, and then try printing again.
Solution two: make sure that the carriage can move freely
The carriage might be stuck in the product. Use the following steps to make sure that the carriage can move freely.
  1. Disconnect the power cord and the USB cable from the back of the product.
    note:
    Do not reconnect the power cord and USB cable until instructed to do so.
  2. Open the top cover.

  3. Check whether the carriage can move freely from one side of the product to the other.
    Apply moderate pressure to one side of the carriage, and then push it back and forth in the product.
      warning:
    You must disconnect the power cord to move parts by hand without the risk of an electrical shock.
  4. Remove any debris or obstructions from the carriage path.
  5. Close the top cover.

  6. Reconnect the power cord and the USB cable to the back of the product.
  7. Try printing again.

Solution One: Load paper in the input tray
The product is out of paper. Use the following steps to load paper in the input tray.
  1. Lift the output tray.

  2. Slide the paper-width guide to its outermost position.
  3. Load the media print-side down along the right edge of the tray. Make sure that the stack of paper aligns with the right and back edges of the tray.
    note:
    Make sure stack of paper does not exceed the line marking in the tray.
  4. Slide the paper-width guide snugly against the paper, and then lower the output tray.

  5. Pull out the extension on the output tray.

  6. Press the Resume button () to continue the print job.
Solution two: Check the print settings
The paper size setting in the printer driver might not match the size of paper loaded in the input tray. Use the following steps to make sure that the paper size setting matches the size loaded in the input tray.
  1. In the software program you are trying to print from, click File, and then click Print. The Print dialog box opens.
  2. Select your product, and then click Properties. The printer Properties dialog box opens.
  3. Click the Printing Shortcuts tab.
  4. Under Printing shortcuts, click the type of job you are trying to print.
  5. Check the Paper sizes setting. Make sure that the selected option matches the loaded paper.
  6. Click OK, and then click OK again to start the print job.

Solution: Check the product covers
One or more of the covers is not closed on the product. Check the top cover and rear access panel or duplexer to make sure that they are completely closed.

Solution One: Check the printhead installation
Use the following steps to make sure that the printhead is correctly installed.
Step one: Remove the printhead
  1. Make sure that the product is on.
  2. Lift the top cover. The carriage moves to the center of the product.

  3. Wait until the carriage is idle and silent.
  4. Disconnect the power cord from the back of the product.
  5. Remove the cartridges. Press the tab on each cartridge, and then remove each cartridge from its slot.
    note:
    Do not leave the cartridges outside the product longer than 30 minutes. Doing so can result in damage to both the product and the cartridges.
  6. Lift the latch handle on the carriage until it stops.

  7. Lift the printhead straight up to remove it.

Step two: Reinstall the printhead
  1. Reinsert the printhead. Make sure that the green and purple blocks on the sides of the printhead align with the corresponding color blocks on the carriage; green to green, purple to purple.

  2. Carefully lower the latch handle before reinserting the cartridges.
    note:
    Leaving the latch handle raised can result in incorrectly seated cartridges and printing issues. The latch must remain down to correctly install the cartridges.

  3. Reinstall the cartridges. Using the colored shape icons for help, slide the cartridges into their appropriate slots until they snap into place and are seated firmly in the slot.
  4. Close the top cover.
  5. Try printing again.
Solution two: Contact HP
If you have completed all of the troubleshooting steps and are still experiencing a problem, contact HP to replace the printhead.

Solution two: Contact HP

Cartridge lights: One or more blinking
Solution one: Check the cartridges
One or more of the cartridges is missing, improperly installed, or a duplicate cartridge is installed. Use the following instructions to check the cartridge installation.
  1. Make sure that the product is on.
  2. Lift the top cover. The carriage moves to the center of the product.

  3. Press down on each cartridge to securely install it in the carriage. The latch should lock when the cartridge is in place.
  4. Check that the correct cartridge is installed in each slot and there is no empty slot. The colored shape icons on each cartridge should match the color shaped icon on each carriage slot.
  5. Close the top cover, and then wait for the carriage to recalibrate.
  6. If the issue persists, try the next solution.
Solution two: Replace the indicated cartridge
Ink levels in the indicated cartridge might be low or approaching empty. If print quality is affected, use the following steps to replace the indicated cartridge. These steps are only basic instructions for replacing a cartridge. if you prefer detailed steps, click here for step-by-step instructions on replacing a cartridge (c01710991).
note:
Ink level alerts and indicators provide estimates for planning purposes only. When you receive a low-ink alert, consider having a replacement cartridge available to avoid possible printing delays. You do not need to replace the ink cartridges until print quality becomes unacceptable.
  1. Make sure that the product is on, and then open the top cover.
  2. Press in the tab on the front of the cartridge, and then pull it out and up to remove it from its slot.
      caution:
    Do not lift the gray latch next to the carriage to install the cartridges. Doing so can result in incorrectly seated cartridges and printing problems. The latch must remain down to correctly install the cartridges.
  3. On the replacement cartridge, pull the orange pull-tab straight back to remove the plastic wrap.
  4. With the cartridge contacts facing the printhead, slide the cartridge into the correct slot. The color-coded icons on the cartridge and in the printhead indicate the correct slot.
  5. Press down on the cartridge until it clicks firmly into place.
  6. Repeat these steps for each cartridge that you want to replace.
  7. Close the top cover. The carriage moves to the right side of the product.

Cartridge lights: One or more blinking
Solution one: Check the cartridges
One or more of the ink cartridges are faulty, need attention, incorrect, missing, damaged, or incompatible. Use the following steps to check the cartridges.
  1. Make sure that the product is on, and then open the top cover.
  2. For the indicated cartridge, check the following:
    • Check that there are no empty slots in the carriage.
    • Make sure that the number on the cartridge label matches the number indicated on the product. The product uses 920 or 920XL cartridges.
    • Make sure that the cartridge is correctly installed. Remove and reinstall the cartridge. Press down on the cartridge until the latch snaps into place.
  3. Close the top cover, and then wait for the carriage to recalibrate.
  4. If the issue persists, try the next solution.
Solution two: Replace the indicated cartridge

Solution: Make sure you have replacement cartridge on hand
This is a low-ink alert. One or more of the ink cartridges are low on ink. You will need to replace the cartridge soon. Make sure you have a replacement cartridge available, and then replace the cartridge once print quality becomes unacceptable.

Solution one: Continue printing with current cartridges
This is a low-ink alert. One or more of the cartridges are almost depleted, which might result in poor print quality. Replace the existing cartridge to avoid poor print quality, or press the Resume button () to continue printing with the existing cartridges.

Solution: Reset the product
A non-recoverable error has occurred. Use the following steps to reset the product.
  1. Press the Power button () to turn off the product.
    note:
    The product might not turn off after pressing the Power button. Continue to the next step regardless.
  2. Disconnect the power cord from the back of the product.
  3. Disconnect the power cord from the electrical outlet.
  4. Wait 60 seconds.
  5. Reconnect the power cord to the electrical outlet.
  6. Reconnect the power cord to the back of the product.
  7. Press the Power button () to turn on the product.
