HP Single-Function and Multi-Function Printers - Fatal Error 'Error 1316. Network error occurred while trying to read <FILE PATH AND NAME>.' (MSI Error 1316) Displays During Software Installation in Windows XP

Issue
While you install the HP software, the following fatal error message displays on the computer: 'Error 1316. Network error occurred while trying read <FILE PATH AND NAME>.'
Solution
Follow these steps to perform a level-three uninstall, register the Windows Installer Service, and then reinstall the HP software. An uninstall and reinstall of the software deletes and overwrites any of the files that might cause the error and resets the Windows Installer. HP recommends that you download the latest software from the HP Web site to remove any files that might be causing this error.
Step one: Perform a level-three uninstall
Using the downloaded software from the HP website, you can perform a level-three uninstall. A level-three uninstall is more comprehensive than the add-remove programs uninstall.
Step two: Register the Windows Installer
Follow these steps to reset the registry settings and options for Windows Installer.
  1. Click Start, and then click Run.
  2. In the Open box, type msiexec / unreg, and then click OK.
  3. Click Start, and then click Run.
  4. In the Open box, type msiexec / regserver, and then click OK.
Step three: Reinstall the HP Software
Follow these steps to reinstall the HP software. By reinstalling the software, you replace everything needed to run the program. This deletes corrupt or missing files.
If you have already downloaded the software, you do not have to download it again. Otherwise, follow these instructions to download and install the software.
  1. Turn on the printer.
  2. Disconnect the USB cable from the printer and the computer (if you already connected it). If the printer is connected to your network, leave it connected.
  3. Use one of the available methods to identify your printer model.
The software and driver results page displays when the printer model is identified.

  4. Check to see if your operating system is correctly identified. If your operating system is not correct, click Edit, select your operating system and version from the drop-down menus, then click Update.
  5. Under Driver - Product Installation Software, click Download next to the full feature driver (recommended), or click Basic Drivers for other driver download options.
  6. If an HP Download and Install Assistant window displays, select Use HP Download and Install Assistant (Recommended) or Download only, then click Next.

  7. Follow the on-screen instructions to save the driver to your computer.
  8. If you used the Download only method, open or run the driver file, then follow the on-screen instructions to install the software.
