After installing the initial release of Service Pack 3 for Windows XP an error condition can occur. The Service Pack 3 update copies an Intel power management driver to the computer that was not on the computer before the update. During Windows startup, computers with AMD processors may experience a blue screen error that displays similar to the following:
A problem has been detected and Windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer...

After the error quickly displays, the computer restarts and briefly displays the error again. The error cycle repeats continuously.
HP has provided a patch that prevents this issue from occurring. If your computer has this error, you must first use the steps in this document to resolve the issue before applying the patch. After the problem is resolved you can install sp37394 - Microsoft Windows XP SP3 Upgrade Utility for systems with AMD processors
. Doing so, prevents the issue from occurring again and allows Service Pack 3 to be downloaded using Windows Updates.
Use the following process to fix this problem:
Only perform this procedure on computers that are using AMD processors.
