The printer does not print, and the status lights blink. One of the following errors messages might display on the printer control panel:
  • Cartridge Problem
  • Incompatible Cartridge
  • Cartridge Missing or Damaged
These errors, including Incompatible cartridge can occur with genuine HP ink cartridges under certain circumstances. The ink cartridge might need to be reinstalled. The electrical contacts could be dirty. The ink cartridges might need to be aligned, or there could be an ink cartridge or printer failure.
Step 1: Use genuine HP ink cartridges
Make sure the installed ink cartridges are compatible with your printer, and that they are unmodified, genuine HP ink cartridges.

Visit HP SureSupply to check ink cartridge compatibility or purchase replacement ink cartridges.
  1. Go to the HP SureSupply website.
  2. Scroll to the bottom of the page, and then make sure the country/region location is correct.
  3. Follow the on-screen instructions to order new ink cartridges or check ink cartridge compatibility with your printer.
Genuine HP ink cartridges can also be purchased from other retailers.
If installing genuine HP ink cartridges resolved the issue, and the printer does not display an ink cartridge error, you do not need to continue troubleshooting.
Step 2: Inspect the ink cartridges
If an ink cartridge does not have full electrical contact with the printer, an ink cartridge error message might display. Remove and then reinstall the ink cartridge.
  1. Press the Power button to turn on the printer, if it is not already on.
  2. Open the ink cartridge access door. Wait until the carriage is idle and silent.
  3. Press down lightly on the end of the ink cartridge to release it.

  7. Close the ink cartridge access door.
  8. Try to print again.
If this resolved the issue, you do not need to continue troubleshooting.
Step 3: Clean the ink cartridge and carriage electrical contacts
The printer might display an ink cartridge error if the ink cartridge contacts are dirty.
  1. Gather the following items to clean the ink cartridge and carriage:
    • Clean distilled water. Use bottled or filtered water if distilled water is not available. Tap water can contain contaminants that damage the ink cartridge.
    • Clean cotton swabs or any soft, lint-free material that will not stick to the ink cartridges (coffee filters work well).
    • Sheets of paper or a paper towel to rest the ink cartridge on during cleaning.
  2. Open the ink cartridge access door and wait until the carriage is idle and silent.
  3. Disconnect the power cord from the back of the printer.
  4. Remove the ink cartridge and place it on a piece of paper with the nozzle plate facing up.
     note:
Do not leave the ink cartridges outside of the printer for more than 30 minutes. If the ink cartridge is outside of the printer for too long, the ink can dry and clog the nozzles.
  5. Dip a clean foam-rubber swab or lint-free cloth into distilled water, and then squeeze any excess water from it.
  6. Clean only the copper-colored contacts

  7. Repeat these steps for the other ink cartridge.
  8. Lightly moisten another cotton swab with distilled water, and then squeeze any excess water from the swab.
  9. Use the swab to clean the electrical contacts in the carriage, located inside the printer on the carriage slots.

  10. Wait 10 minutes to allow the ink cartridge and carriage electrical contacts to dry.
  11. Reinstall the ink cartridges.
  12. Close the ink cartridge access door.
  13. Reconnect the power cord to the back of the printer.
  14. Press the Power button to turn on the printer.
  15. Try to print a page.
  16. If you are still unable to print, repeat these steps to clean and reseat the ink cartridges. Multiple cleanings might be necessary to restore printing.
If this resolved the issue, you do not need to continue troubleshooting.
Step 4: Reset the printer
To reset the printer, unplug it while the power is turned on.
  1. Turn the printer on, if it is not already on.
  2. Wait until the printer is idle and silent before you continue.
  3. With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer.
  4. Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.
  5. Wait at least 60 seconds.
  6. Plug the power cord back into the wall outlet.
     note:
HP recommends connecting the printer power cord directly to the wall outlet.
  7. Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the printer.
  8. Turn on the printer, if it does not automatically turn on.
The printer might go through a warm-up period. The printer lights might flash, and the carriage might move.
  9. Wait until the warm-up period finishes and your printer is idle and silent before you proceed.
If this resolved the issue, you do not need to continue troubleshooting.
Step 5: Replace the ink cartridge
If cleaning and reseating the ink cartridge does not fix the problem, replace the ink cartridge with a new, compatible HP ink cartridge. If you need to print immediately and the quality of the printouts is not a concern, you can print in backup mode.
If you have a defective ink cartridge or printhead, it might be under warranty. To check the warranty on your ink supplies, go to hp.com/go/learnaboutsupplies, select your country/region, and then review the limited warranty information for your supplies.
  1. Make sure the printer is turned on. If necessary, press the Power button () to turn the printer on.
  2. Open the top cover of the printer.

  3. Wait until the carriage moves to the right side of the printer and is idle and quiet.
  4. Press down on the old ink cartridge, and then slide it out of the carriage.

    • To replace the black ink cartridge, remove the ink cartridge from the right slot.
  5. Remove the new ink cartridge from its packaging and pull the pink tab to remove the protective tape from the ink cartridge.

     caution:
Do not touch the ink nozzles or copper contacts on the ink cartridge. Touching these parts will result in clogs, ink failure, and bad electrical connections. Do not remove the copper strips. They are required electrical contacts.
    1. Ink nozzles (do not touch)
    2. Copper contacts (do not touch)
  6. Hold the ink cartridge so that the copper strips are on the bottom and facing toward the printer.
  7. Slide the ink cartridge at a slight upward angle into the carriage until the ink cartridge snaps into place.

If this resolved the issue, you do not need to continue troubleshooting.
Step 6: Service the printer
If your product still has an issue, service the product.
Contacting HP for service in all countries/regions except Asia Pacific.
If you completed all the preceding steps and your product still has an issue, service the product.
First, go to Check your product warranty to check your printer warranty status, and then go to Contact HP Support to find an authorized service dealer or to schedule a repair.
Repair fees might apply for out-of-warranty printers.
Print in backup mode
If you do not have a replacement ink cartridge available, you can still print. Remove the problem ink cartridge, and then print with the remaining ink cartridge. If you remove the tri-color ink cartridge, the printouts are in grayscale. If you remove the black ink cartridge, the printer prints slowly and the colors in the printouts might differ.
  1. Press the Power button to turn on the printer.
  2. Open the ink cartridge access door. The carriage moves to the right side of the printer.
Wait until the carriage is idle and silent before you continue.
  3. Push down on the top of the problem ink cartridge to release it, and then pull it toward you to remove it from its slot.

  4. Close the ink cartridge access door.
  5. Wait a few moments for the ink cartridge to calibrate, and then send a print job.
