Blinking Lights on the HP Deskjet D4100 Printer Series

Blinking lights
The lights on the front of the product can be on, off, or blinking (flashing), depending on the status of the product. The lights indicate product status and are useful for diagnosing printing problems.

  2. Cancel button

The following sections describe the most common combinations of blinking lights, followed by solutions for each combination. Find the blinking lights pattern you are experiencing, and then follow the steps to resolve the issue.
Issue: The Power light blinks
In this normal condition, the following light pattern displays on the product control panel:
  • Power light: Blinking
  • Resume light: Off
  • USB Connection light: Off
  • USB Error light: Off

  • Cause
    The product is preparing a print job. The Power light blinks while the product receives the data.
Issue: The Power light is on and the Resume light blinks
In this error condition, the following light pattern displays on the product control panel:
  • Power light: On
  • Resume light: Blinking
  • USB Connection light: Off
  • USB Error light: Off

  • Causes
    Following is a list of possible causes for a blinking Resume light:
    • The product is out of paper, or the paper is not properly loaded in the tray.
    • The product has a paper jam.
    • One or both of the cartridges are not properly inserted.
    • Incompatible cartridges are inserted.
    • The carriage is stalled.
How do I resolve this issue? The following sections describe the most common messages that display on the computer when the Resume light blinks. From the following choices, find the message that displays on your computer, and then expand that section for solutions.
Issue: The Power light and the Resume light blink
In this error condition, the following light pattern displays on the product control panel:
  • Power light: Blinking
  • Resume light: Blinking
  • USB Connection light: Off
  • USB Error light: Off

  • Cause
    The product needs to be reset.
Issue: The USB Connection light and the USB Error light blink
In this error condition, the following light pattern displays on the product control panel:
  • Power light: On
  • Resume light: Off
  • USB Connection light: Blinking
  • USB Error light: Blinking

  • Cause
    When printing photos from a camera, the USB connection to the camera is lost.
Issue: The USB Connection light is on and the USB Error light blinks
In this error condition, the following light pattern displays on the product control panel:
  • Power light: On
  • Resume light: Off
  • USB Connection light: On
  • USB Error light: Blinking

  • Cause
    The camera's photo transfer setting is not selected.
Issue: The USB Connection light is off and the USB Error light is on
In this error condition, the following light pattern displays on the product control panel:
  • Power light: On
  • Resume light: Off
  • USB Connection light: Off
  • USB Error light: On

  • Cause
    An unsupported device, such as a mouse, is connected to the front USB port.
