HP Notebook PCs - "Disk Controller Error" or "Multibay Lock Error" Message Appears During Startup or Boot

HP recommends the following resolutions for Disk Controller error messages that may occur before Windows operating system is started. This error may appear if the CD or DVD drive is not connected properly to the system board or connector.
Multibay Drive Lock Error
The message Multibay Drive Lock error may appear followed by one of the error messages below:
  • 1780 - Disk Controller Error
  • 1781 - Disk Controller Error
  • 1782 - Disk Controller Error
  • 1783 - Disk Controller Error
Method 1: Reseat the Optical Drive
To re-seat the optical drive follow the instructions in the document HP Notebook PCs - Steps for Removing and Replacing the Optical Drive .
Method 2: Contact HP service and support
If the preceeding method does not resolve the error, please contact HP service and support for further assistance.
