Error message on black screen; "178x Disk Controller"

HP recommends the following resolutions for "Disk Controller Error" error messages that may occur before Windows XP or Windows 2000 is started. This error may appear if the CD or DVD drive is not connected properly to the system board or connector.
178x - Disk Controller Error
The "178x - disk controller error" includes any one of the following error messages:
  • 1780 - Disk Controller Error
  • 1781 - Disk Controller Error
  • 1782 - Disk Controller Error
  • 1783 - Disk Controller Error
Method 1: Reseat the Optical Drive

Method 2: Contact HP service and support
If the preceeding method does not resolve the error, please contact HP service and support for further assistance.
